Chateau Yering in Victoria, Australia

Set in the beautiful Yarra Valley, the heart of Victoria's wine country, Chateau Yering is a window onto Australia's rich past. This Relais & Chateaux affiliate once welcomed parties of Melbourne socialites seeking a country retreat. Just an hour out of the city, the stunningly restored mansion was constructed in 1854 using handmade bricks and cedar timbers from New South Wales. Its thirty-two individually decorated suites offer unsurpassed rural views while cozy guest lounges with open fires are the ideal place for reading, conversing with friends or enjoying a glass of Yarra Valley wine.

In this bucolic setting, you can savor fine local vintages at Eleonore's, a conservatory-style restaurant overlooking one of the finest rural vistas in Victoria. For relaxation, stroll the gardens, which were laid out by the founder of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, or walk around the river to Yarra Glen. Farther out, antique shopping, bush walking and wineries beckon. For an unforgettable experience, embark on a hot air balloon ride at dawn.

I did love the Chateau Yering and the wonderful "public" rooms very "grand" (for Australia). Location is great in the Yarra Valley. Our suite had very generous proportions and the bathroom was fantastic: the shower is to die for and the bathtub so very inviting (has been obviously updated very recently). I found the bedroom a bit too "chintzy" for comfort, do not take me wrong I like the period features and the period furniture but a more understated upholstery will help to move this place from 20th to 21st century. Anyway I will be happy to go back anytime.

The historic homestead has been extended and renovated to a very very comfortable level in a plush country house fashion. Think Poirot murder mystery settings! The suites are large, well air-conditioned with lavish verandahs for watching the sun set while enjoying a wine or two. The gardens were originally laid out by Baron Von Mueller of Botanic Gardens fame and are lovely to stroll in. Elanores Restaurant is very elegant and the food excellent. Its proximity to the surrounding wine growing area makes this a great base for an indulgent weekend.

Very Clean average breakfast not much good if you're vegetarian I asked if they could add a bit of avocado to my cooked breakfast because it was really dry. So they took my plate away saying they would. When she came with my plate there was No avocado. Please Explain. The swimming pool needs updating. Nice place but way too much for what it is.

Stunning old world charm, with old fashioned service. The property was as beautiful as the advertising shows, suites were enormous and very well appointed. Beds were very comfortable, claw foot baths were luxurious. Dinner and breakfast were delicious.

We stayed here to celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary. It is a lovely place to stay. We were treated so well - from the booking process to the check out process. The staff were great. We had a lovely room with balcony and peaceful views. The bed and pillows were first class. It was the quietest hotel we have ever stayed in. We ate at the restaurant as part of the package. It was also first class. And the breakfast was all you could want. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel if staying in the Yarra Valley. Cheap - it is not. Classy - it is.
