A 150-Year-Old Legend: What True European Old Money Hotel Really Looks Like

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

Vienna is a city steeped in music and art, where classical melodies and timeless artworks weave into daily life, and grand imperial palaces stand harmoniously alongside cosy local cafés. Nestled in this iconic city, Hotel Sacher has thrived for 150 years since its opening in 1876. As Vienna’s only family-run luxury hotel, it embodies the poised refinement of old Europe and stands as the ultimate embodiment of authentic European old money style. The hotel was built on the site of the Kärntnertor Theater, erected back in 1709. After the Vienna State Opera was completed, the old theatre was demolished, and Eduard Sacher acquired the land to build his hotel. To this day, Hotel Sacher remains in the heart of the city, directly across from the Vienna State Opera. Major cultural landmarks including the Albertina Museum, the Hofburg Palace are all within easy walking distance. Boasting an illustrious heritage, the hotel ranks 49th on the World’s 50 Best Hotels list. It is one of only two establishments in Austria to hold a Michelin Three Key rating and serves as a distinguished member of LHW. The intimate lobby exudes exquisite taste, with walnut wall panels paired with burgundy velvet furnishings that evoke the romantic grandeur of the Habsburg Empire. Behind the reception lies a photo gallery, a hall of fame featuring portraits of nobles, celebrities, statesmen and artists, chronicling the hotel’s glorious history across two centuries. The hotel underwent its first major renovation starting in 2004, led by renowned French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. The project lasted eight years, and the hotel reopened to guests in 2012. Its exclusive noble floor was fully refurbished in 2017. Today, it offers 152 guest rooms and suites, with the smallest room covering 27 square metres. Every interior detail is personally curated by the hotel’s family owners. All suites are named after operas, and the hallways are adorned with 19th-century Chinoiserie wallpaper popular among European high society at the time. The Deluxe Room with View features a soft Tiffany blue palette. Damask wallpaper, velvet curtains, walnut furniture and brass lighting blend gracefully, creating a perfect fusion of gentle elegance and classic luxury. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame unbeatable views of the opera house, requiring no filters at all. Welcome amenities include champagne and miniature Sacher cakes, while all non-alcoholic drinks in the in-room minibar are replenished free of charge daily. The bathroom is thoughtfully appointed with bespoke toiletries. A powerful rainfall shower effortlessly washes away travel fatigue. The attentive turndown service even embroiders guests’ names on pillowcases, delivering a uniquely personal touch of romance. The original Sacher-Torte is another world-famous highlight. Crafted following a centuries-old secret recipe by hand, it draws endless queues outside Café Sacher. Fortunately for hotel guests, this iconic treat is served directly to rooms and breakfast tables. Three private bars inside the hotel also serve authentic Sacher-Torte. Breakfast is presented in a classic European semi-buffet style, featuring a wide selection of traditional Austrian pastries, sparkling wine, cold cuts and freshly baked bread. Made-to-order hot dishes such as caviar scrambled eggs and truffle ham eggs elevate the luxury dining experience to new heights. From its origins as an old theatre to a legendary luxury hotel, and from its signature cake to unparalleled hospitality, Hotel Sacher has stood firmly in central Vienna for 150 years. It has witnessed the city’s evolution while staying true to timeless traditions. It carries forward Vienna’s artistic spirit through its culinary heritage and defines understated luxury with meticulous details, offering every guest an authentic taste of century-old European old money charm.

6 Star Experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Initially booked at Hotel Imperial but checked out after 4 hours due to no hot water. Checked into Hotel Sacher and was DELIGHTED we did! Superb staff...the amazing Blue Bar....preferred seated at the cafe (a real perk due to the popularity of the Sacher Torte lines)....super clean and well appointed room...comfortable bed...and an unbeatable location. One of the best hotel experiences my wife and I have had. We put this up there with Le Meurice in Paris and Claridges in London...but with BETTER staff!

High end, sophisticated luxury in the heart of Vienna

There is one glaring problem with the Sacher Hotel Vienna and I want everyone to be aware of it before they book a stay. The problem is this - once you have stayed there, no other hotel will ever be good enough. The Sacher really is the last word in traditional, high quality, excellence. From the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave, you are treated like a VIP. Over the 150 years it has been operating just about every star, celebrity, royal and politician has stayed there (they have the photos to prove it) but they treat every guest as important. The decor is chic and cosily old fashioned, the rooms are well appointed, the staff are friendly and attentive and the food is exquisite. I could go on and on but I will just say the Sacher is worth every penny and I can’t wait to go back.

Quiet Luxury in the Heart of Vienna

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

This historic hotel has thankfully kept up with the times and maintained an extremely impressive level of service. The friendly door staff are welcoming and helpful. We checked in and were very diplomatically told that our room was not quite ready—always a potentially fraught moment when arriving after a long plane trip but it was handled so gracefully by the desk clerk that we weren’t upset at all. She promised us we would like the room (a one category upgrade from junior suite to junior suite with view) and she was right. It was one of the best rooms (and bathroom!) that we have stayed in. Housekeeping was excellent The breakfast is served in a series of lovely rooms by a very friendly staff. The bar, while tiny and often full, was a pleasure. Finally the location of the hotel can’t be beat. We thought long and hard where to stay in Vienna. The Sacher was not the cheapest option, and I worried its historic quality might have slipped. But we are very very glad we stayed there and look forward to returning.
