Reviews for W Retreat & Spa - Vieques Island
We stayed at the resort in June 2017. Upon arrival at the airport in Vieques there is a nice airport lounge owned by the W and free transport provided by the hotel. The concierge and reception staff a friendly and accommodating. The hotel and resort are well maintained and rooms are very modern, nice and clean. The restaurant on the other hand is a complete fiasco. The staff don't seem to give care about the guests and they work in silos. The day we arrived I had ordered a hamburger. The waitress who also works at the bar left us hanging so we got up to order the food at the bar like you do at McDonalds. The food came out pretty fast that day but my burger and fries were still frozen on the inside. I went ballistic and immediately escalated this to the manager on duty. She was friendly and I told her that none of us dining will be paying the bill for the food or drinks as they were trying to kill us! The breakfast is also a joke, you have to line up outside for up to 15 minutes while you wait to be seated. There are loads of tables available but due to a lack of staff and general bad management they don't seem to see this. On the last day my breakfast took 45 minutes to arrive. I escalated this to the manager and she gave me some free pastries. I then left a comment on the bill along with zero tip and I was delighted not to see it on the bill during the check out. Food wise when it doesn't come out frozen it's basic and is diner quality. It's supposed to be a premium hotel but it's the same food you can order in an airport or shopping mall. There is also a lack of choice and if you're staying more than two nights you are really limited on what you can eat. Given the beautiful property this is it's totally let down by the staff :-( Not what you expect when paying $350 a night. #disaster
I treated my friend to one night here for his 50th birthday and it was really special. We are fairly jaded travelers but the upgrade to our spectacular rooms because of my SPG gold status was wonderful and we were really impressed with the room and facilities. Just very cool and unusual. It's the best W I've stayed at, with the Miami south beach one coming in second. The staff was extremely gracious and nice. The GM Natalie sent each of us a bottle of champagne for my friends bday. Jeep rental on site and complimentary snorkeling gear made it all very convenient. I appreciated the complimentary coffee and tea in the morning in the Living Room. The fire pit in the main area was really nice and views from the main area were beautiful, as were the pools. I had an excellent massage at the spa and gym facilities were nice and open all the time. Complimentary transportation to the airport was great too. This is a special place and I definitely would like to come back. A few tips: Esperanza is pretty and has some good placed for dinner or lunch with a view. My fav was bananas which had really great food. Skip Isabella which is a dump unless you want to collect Seaglass at Seaglass beach. Some people said there wouldn't be that much Seaglass there but they were wrong. It was fantastic for collecting. The other beaches did not have much at all. It's not a very attractive beach so don't plan on hanging out there. Sun day is a very nice beach with bathroom facilities nearby. There are trees for shade and a very long beach with a protected bathing area. There are no fish however. Caracas was cited as a place to go snorkeling but again we saw no fish whatsoever. Caracas is quite beautiful as well with facilities. The saying there is softer and wider than at Sun Bay. We did have success snorkeling at mosquito pier. On a prior trip, we also saw a sea turtle and some fish off of blue beach.

Hi Nathalie, I hope this email finds you well. Xavier and I had the pleasure of recently vacationing on your property the week of May 23 through May 28th. I must say the time spent with the "W family" was more than we expected. From the moment we checked in we felt as though we were special VIP guests. I know you have many that vacation there but the attention you delivered to us felt so personal and heartfelt. I am sure that is what your team does with all guest so the "W" values are just not spoken but are lived. So with that, I would like to make notice to the few we made personal contact to share our appreciation for adding the extra to our trip. Nathalie and Yaritza, Xavier and I were so impressed that each of you intentionally introduced yourselves to us and genuinely showed interest in our stay!! You both put forth efforts to add the "W" touch in celebrating with Xavier and I as we were celebrating personal achievements in our lives. We enjoyed the gift of the bottle of champagne at sunset by the beach which is an added memory to our vacation. Because the experience at your property was so amazing, we deemed ourselves as ambassadors for your "W" family and the property with any vacationers we met. To our surprise again, we were recognized for that with a gift, a bottle of wine. In addition, you both took time to write us personal notes which meant a lot. Again, Xavier and I were blown away! Thank you Nathalie and Yaritza!! Yaritza, you are such a hard worker and the energy you exhibit is so inviting and embracing. The time you took to share your "inside" suggestions with us was beyond appreciated. You made us feel as if we had known you for years! We could tell you love what you do... you enjoy helping people while ensuring their stay exceeds any expectations. We will never forget your contagious smile. Hopefully on our next visit you will be teaching dance classes!!! That definitely will be an added plus!!! Front Desk/Concierge - Mia, you were so extremely nice and have such a wonderful spirit. With you being one of the first faces of the W, you do an amazing job! Rafael, you are the best ambassador ever! From the time you picked us up from the airport to the time you delivered our bags to the room. You are an awesome face of the "W" and such a kind person. Giovanni, thank you for arranging our activities. We felt we got to see the most we could on the island until we felt like we "owned" it! We agree that Las Chivas Beach is really beautiful. We can understand why it is one of your favorite beaches and had a great time snorkeling there. Waitress/Servers- Lianny, you were so friendly and attentive. You made sure we had all we needed. Your menu suggestion to get the burger was right on time. One of the best burgers we have had!! :-) Jhon and Nenad- You all were super! Jhon thanks for making the best breakfast selection for Xavier in getting him those strawberries and blueberries--- as he can be so picky! :-) Our special requests were never a problem for you. Nenad, we truly understand the 6 yrs later... and you are still in Vieques! How could you ever leave Paradise!! You too are awesome and very attentive family member. Pool Attendants- Hector and PJ we missed the infamous barbeque ribs from your family's business!! Missing those ribs is an added reason we have to come back to Vieques!! Thanks for introducing yourself to us! You all do an awesome job in keeping the pool area on point! And last but not least, Belinda and Pablo!!! Best bartenders ever!! Belinda you are so sweet and you are always smiling!! We love your creations and always looked forward to the sunset sips!! You made sure our spirits were right! :-) Pablo, the healthiest drinks bartender!! Xavier and I really appreciated you letting us watch you make those healthy drinks (LOL) Who would have ever thought of putting a rosemary/thyme con cation in a drink! Yes, we walked away with a few recipes and will always toast to those in your honor! We would be remiss not to mention all others that we came into contact but unfortunately cannot recall their names. This includes other front desk persons, groundkeepers, the housekeeper that turn down our bed, the lady that suggested the quesito pastry at the coffee shop (her name may be Shaunta). It is now one of my favorite pastries! You all are such nice people. All in all, this was one of the best trips Xavier and I have ever taken! It was so refreshing to be surrounded by a team that lives as a family and make their guest feel like family. At least Xavier and I felt like a part of your family...... :-) We cannot wait to come back to visit. Thank you again for giving us such great memories. We wish nothing but the best for each of you. Peace and blessings, Jackie and Xavier

Booked through chase sapphire system for a 3 day stay. Flight cancelled on the first day of planned stay at this W. Made many phone calls in that afternoon telling them we cannot check in because the air company had no other flight to take us to Vieques that day. So we decided to cancel our stay at W. What did they do? They tried their very best to not answer the phone, neither did they even make cooperation with the Chase sapphire agency, they first said 1 night's fee must be fined, which is OK since that's what we think the policy is. Then they said we have to pay the whole 3 day staying fee even if we didn't show up and the reason is "failed check-in", yes now I feel so glad we didn't have to stay there for 3 days as their attitude disgusted me. Finally, Chase paid two-night stay's fee and we paid one night's. Thank Chase for doing that and shame on this W. We called back and still no manager would ever pick up the phone, the waiting was transferred back and forth on the phone and no one answered. Really? I firmly believe this W cannot represent the professionalism and goodness of the SPG group. Considering all other negative comments here, I hope you think about it more before deciding booking this hotel. Save the money and go to St Regis or Ritz Carlton to enjoy the ocean, not here.

What an awesome hotel, it was a paradise. Perfect by all means, service, people, scenic view, pool, the beaches on the island, food. The hotel is so quiet, a place to enjoy with your couple, romantic setting. You should try the Vieques Fresh drink...take a massage with the sound of the sea as background...Go out to Medialuna, Caracas beach... nice place for a romantic gateaway....
