We visited Fairmont Maui after staying in Kauai at the Grand Hyatt. The Fairmont was not very impressive. It could have been any beach resort on the mainland. It didn't seem very "Hawaiian" at all. The only view from the main lounge is that of the palm trees and a bridge. You can't see the ocean from the resort at all. Our room was spacious but dark. Our view was of the parking lot and a construction site from which we heard the beeping of trucks backing up all morning/day. The service was fair at the bars. Drinks were unremarkable. All in all, I would not come back to Maui based on this experience. I wish we had stayed in Kauai for the week instead of splitting time between both islands.

We spent 5 nights here for Spring break with a 11 year old and a 15 year old. We chose to stay here over the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons because the Fairmont offered the option of a 2 bedroom villa. The concept of the villa is excellent. Plenty of room for a family of four to relax. Upstairs was the master bedroom/bath with a porch that faced the beach. There is also a huge walk in closet on this level. Downstairs is a small kitchen, dining area, living room with a pull out couch and another bedroom and full bath. The room also has its own small pool and a washer and dryer. The villa was in a great location near the pool and we could easily run to the room during the day. We came back to the room several times and found cookies, banana bread, etc. that had been left by the hotel. The hotel as a whole, however, feels dated. The pool is on the smaller side for a hotel this large and has only one very small water slide. The chairs around the pool usually filled up early, however there were always plenty of chairs in the surrounding grass. Pool service was nonexistent. There are no attendants to set up your chairs or provide towels. We were lucky if we saw a pool waiter once during the day-and it was not very crowded. If you are wanting a place where they wait on you hand and foot, this isn’t it. The beach is small, but they do provide chairs and umbrellas at no cost. All in all, there were a few hiccups, but we loved the room. Housekeeping was lovely and very good at their job, however they always seemed to turn up about 4pm as we were trying to shower. The hotel definitely lacks emphasis on customer service thats present at a Four Seasons, but you are also not paying the Four Seasons price. Not sure if we would stay here again with so many other options in Wailea.

Just returned from the Fairmont. I had heard so many wonderful things about it, especially location, service, and amenities for family, and those all were amazing, but there were a few things that were enough to make me consider if I would return in the future. First, the pros: -We're President's club members, and were using some free night certificates we had earned. They gave us a fantastic upgrade to oceanview room. -Huge suites, great for families. -Love that our baby got an actual good-sized crib to sleep in, and not just a pack-n-play -They have baby soap/lotion, which was so thoughtful. Also gave us a diaper genie for diapers -Kids 5 and under eat free with each paying adult -they let us send packages to the hotel beforehand, so I didn't have to pack diapers all the way from mainland to hotel -one of the pool attendants was extra nice one day. He saw my husband blowing up my kid's floatie with his mouth, and asked if he could help since they have an air pump. Also offered my older kids free floaties to borrow while in the pool. Loved the pro-active attentiveness instead of waiting for us to ask for help -Easy to get seats at pool and beach. Love not feeling like I have to fight for a seat, and also that umbrellas on the beach are included so we aren't nickeled and dimed for these things. -In general, most of the employees around the resort had a friendly attitude and were willing to help when I asked with a smile. Makes me feel more at ease. -free self parking -luggage handlers very friendly and helpful Now, the cons: -As mentioned before, the hotel is aging. Chipped wood on edging and doors, stains in our bathtub. -Service around the pool was scarce. We never had an attendant ask us if we wanted food/drinks. When I'm on vacation and staying at a resort of this level, I would think that would happen, and I saw attendants asking others, but no one ever approached us if we needed any drinks/food. -Since no one ever took our orders at the pool, we went to Ama Bar and Grill one day for lunch, and while there, service was also slow. -Not sure why service around the pool was inconsistent. One day, the attendant was letting my kids use floaties for free, and when we returned them, he said "come back anytime for them!" The next day, we went to the window to ask to borrow floaties, and I was told they were $8 each. -On day of checkout, there were only 2 reps, only 2 people in front of me, but I waited in line for 30 minutes for a 1 minute conversation to check out. Overall, it's a nice resort with many great amenities for families, and since we were staying with certificates earned from our credit card, it was a fantastic deal for us. I really wanted to love it, but I kept thinking if I were paying rack rates out of pocket, I would expect better quality and service than what we experienced. I will say we may have been there at a busier time, and there were a few conferences going on while we were there, so that may have affected our experience. I also do love Fairmont as a brand, and I have nothing but great experiences while talking to customer service reps on the phone. Maybe one day I can give Fairmont Kea Lani another chance, but I hope things change for the better before we do so.

Nice hotel but given the price, I expected the details to be a bit more luxurious in the rooms and around the pool and grounds. Wonderful staff and excellent service. Rooms are all suites, which is a huge plus. Beds are comfortable.
