Reviews for Wharekauhau Country Estate
This was a double birthday treat for my husband and I. Long way to go but so well worth it when you arrive as you are immediately transported to a world where it is all about you. The location and the accommodation is divine. We used the lovely indoor swimming pool in the afternoon and enjoyed making ourselves afternoon tea with the wonderful home made shortbread biscuits. We even loved the window in the shower where you can look outside but no one can see you! We want one of those! The only downside of the whole visit was that there was no choice on the menu and we were kept waiting quite some time before we went into dinner. The food was great - nicely cooked and presented but was disappointed not to try/see other examples of the chef's culinary ability. In comparison breakfast was outstanding- forgot to order the mimosas though ! Maybe next time?

One doesn't just happen upon this property, one seeks it out, and, it is worth the effort. We drove down from the Hawkes Bay area and as the roads got gradually narrower and finally became a dirt track, we began to wonder just how far from civilisation we were venturing! We needn't have worried because most things in this lodge have been thought through and elevated to a luxurious level. Myself and my two daughters stayed for 3 nights in 2 adjoining cottages. These are all within easy walking distance of the main lodge where the main rooms are to be found. The cottages are large and well appointed with a very comfortable sitting area in the main room of which lead double doors onto a small covered terrace area. It's difficult to describe how comfortable it all was. The main lodge has comfortable lounges and a really plush games room upstairs, together with lovely outside space for eating. The food was good, with some dishes being excellent. As mentioned by others, breakfast and dinner is included in the room rate. The menu each evening is fixed, but it is discussed with you at breakfast & I overheard alternatives being suggested to those who didn't like this or that. As we were staying 3 days, a complementary guided tour of the farm was thrown in. It is an optional excursion of staying a shorter period of time. We really enjoyed the tour, which not only described the history of Wharekauhau but also explained about how the farm works. We also climbed Mt Wharekauhau on our own one day and were lucky enough to see a few wild pigs. Another day we walked along the beach, which is made of black sand and has a strong current which threw up a sea mist, all very atmospheric! The staff were all very charming and approachable, easily drifting into conversation with guests. I'm sure any reasonable request would be accommodated. The only negative was the wifi. It was fine for browsing, emails etc, but streaming things like Netflix was impossible as it kept buffering. It's a small issue and I'm sure it will be addressed. We enjoyed our stay and will remember it for years, which is a lot more than I can say about most places.

Everything about our stay was exceptional! All the staff were helpful and friendly - in particular Nicholas was especially charismatic and welcoming. The cottages are cosy and well appointed and the main house is beautiful. We enjoyed the activities around the house and walking along the beach, and also would recommend a massage. Food and wine were excellent and it was very nice being able to have pre dinner drinks with some of the other guests in the lounge room. To top off the weekend we took the option of a return transfer via helicopter which was great fun!

This is a beautiful property, yes it is expensive, but with dinner and breakfast included it's not that outrageously so. The cottage rooms are so lovely, the main lodge is a pleasure to hang out in, the staff are warm and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The food is perfect and the wine a great example of the terrific wine produce of the region. On my list to go back to, the countryside is sublime, reminded me of Ireland. The drive in is stunning.

We have just experienced a two night stay at Wharekauhau on a 2.5 week trip in the North Island. We were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary, and my husband's 70th birthday, both coming up shortly. The Lodge is exquisite, as was our Cottage, just a few minutes walk from the Lodge. Both evenings we were treated to a wonderful meal, set up on our own, in separate rooms. Grant, our waitperson, was a delight, as in fact were all the staff we met. We had beautiful spring weather, and thoroughly enjoyed the views over the pastures, with sheep grazing right up to the fence outside our cottage, over to the ocean. Our stay was perfect, and we can't thank all the staff at Wharekauhau enough for making it so special.
