Disappointing

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We came on Saturday to have a drink at the bar in the afternoon. Considering the prices of the drinks, you would think the service would justify the prices. Unfortunately it was not the case. We sat at the little table across from the bar, 2 bartenders, 3 guests at the bar and the bartenders didnt even looked at us. I couldn't believe this, no acknowledgment by any kind. After 10 minutes, we asked the girl (another guest) sitting there too. She said she was waiting for 30 minutes before anyone came to her but she stood up and went to get a server. The gentleman looked like we are a bother to him, he asked if we want food menu, we said just drink menu and he left saying he will bring water and take our order. He took our order (water was never brought), then he brought the drinks which he spilled. He cleaned the table, not the glasses, and left. There was no table cloth, not even napkins, no snack of any kind. Needles to say for over $100 for 3 drinks, this is unacceptable. The bartenders never made any eye contact, never said a word or looked our way. The wait staff was not friendly, kind of accepting that they have to serve us. The only friendly and welcoming employee we encountered was the doorman. This young kid (I wish I remembered his name) was fantastic. Mayflower Inn unfortunately is not what it used to be but this experience was truly disappointing. You dont expect this type of service anywhere, less so in a place that once upon a time had class.

disappointing!

My 2 daughters and I came to the Mayflower Inn yesterday for a special spa day. We were very disappointed for a number of reasons. The first upsetting thing was that there were children running around and noisy at times. very disturbing. One of my daughters has 2 kids and is pregnant and came to the spa day to get a break from it all and was met with this annoyance. The same daughter had a prenatal massage which she said was awful and she said she wanted to walk out but stayed because she is too nice. She kept asking the person for more pressure and the woman would use more pressure for about 2 minutes then return to a basic light rub. My daughter asked her multiple times, each time with the same result. Finally she gave up and was very unhappy. My other daughter and I also had massages and were mostly pleased. We also all 3 had facials and those were also good. The additional disappointments came from how the spa is maintained. My daughters arrived before me and when I came in at around 9am there was one woman sitting at the reception desk. I asked if my daughters had already come in and she seemed not to know. Finally, she told me to head down the hall to the locker room where I found them. All day after that I saw one of your staff giving newcomers tours of the facility, I did not get that. Didn't even realize till later that there was that whole water area, what a surprise. in addition, the locker combinations are confusing. there is no instructions to be seen anywhere explaining the routine of how to lock and how to open which caused me some frustration for a bit. At one point I went to get my daughter to show me how to get back into my locker. those locks work differently than any other place I had been. I would also like to point out that each time I went to the sinks to wash my hands, in the locker room, one or the other of the towel holders was empty. Later in the day I took a shower and didn't realize till I was naked that there was someone else's hair in the drain and some ugly black thing, still don't know what it was, on the floor under the bench in that outer part of shower room. The shower head is also in need of cleaning, many of the water spouts were blocked or the water was coming out at an awkward angle. I'd also like to say that the towels are very rough and unpleasant to dry yourself on. We also had lunch at the main restaurant at the inn which was fine but I want to mention that I had the open faced omelette and it was so salty I couldn't eat it. The server was also not very good. my daughter ordered a specific coffee drink and clearly said she wanted to almond milk on the side. the server was writing our order down so we were surprised when the coffee came with the almond milk already mixed into the coffee. All in all we enjoyed our time together and have decided to make spa day an annual event. Unfortunately for the Mayflower, it won't be there.

Not Impressed

When you are spending a LOT of money on one night in a special inn in the beautiful Connecticut countryside, you expect excellent service. And you hope for a relaxing night with no stress. Unfortunately, on our first visit to the Mayflower Inn, we did not receive it. Upon arriving and checking in we were told we were in a building across the street. The staff member offered to walk us across but as we only had two small bags and didn't need help, we asked which building? She pointed to the one on the left. We walked up (in snow and wind) and could not find Room 10 anywhere. My spouse walked back down to the front desk and asked for better directions to Room 10. The clerk said, "oh! You haven't been to your room yet? Did you go down to the basement?" Obviously not. Another staff member then pointed out the correct building, on the right and we were able to access our room. Room 10 is two rooms, a large living area with fireplace and large bedroom with fireplace. Two large bathrooms and a patio complete the space. Very pretty decorations and comfortable. Odd placement of the TV, not over the FP in front of the sofa. You have to turn and align to the left to watch it. We were very off put by the large beetle in one toilet. We couldn't figure out how it got there until the next morning when we saw a swarm of lady bugs on the curtain next to the toilet. Eww. We dined at the Inn and had a lovely experience. However, we were quickly brought back down to earth, when we walked up to our room (on a path only partially cleared of ice and snow) to find our room key did not work! Note: they are very proud to explain the keys have no numbers on them for security reasons. My spouse trudged back down to the front desk, they gave him another key-he walked back through the cold...and new key also does not work. At the point we are irritated and cold. We call the front desk and they promise to send someone. it was about 25 minutes of being unable to gain access to our room before a maintenance man was able to unlock the door. The next day they delivered a key to the spa while we worked out. We had to laugh when that key didn't work either! You would think for $1800 for one night, service would be top notch and bend over backwards to ensure your stay is excellent. They didn't. We even explained our displeasure at the key situation and received a shoulder shrug in response. We work hard for our money and really had been looking forward to a stress-free stay. We did not get it. Overall not impressed with the Mayflower Inn and certainly don't consider it a 5 star hotel.

“The Mayflower Inn and Spa was luxuriously kept and meticulously clean. We had an all-inclusive two night stay. The food was excellent as was our spa experience. Can't say enough nice things about the employees especially Travis and Timmy and Matt, our hiking guide. Excellent all around experience. Can't wait to return!”
