Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood, California

Tucked just a block off the bustling Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, the Mediterranean-style Sunset Marquis is the ultimate urban refuge. This exclusive hideaway, which completed an expansion in 2008 by adding 40 brand new villas, a full service spa, and a re-launched restaurant, invites you in with lavish accommodations nestled on almost five acres of verdant gardens, 4,000 trees and plants, and koi ponds. A favorite of the hip and famous since opening in 1963, the hotel has hosted some of the biggest names in music and film, as well as discerning travelers from around the globe. Not to mention it's likely the only hotel you will visit with a state of the art complete recording studio. The magic truly does happen right here, at Sunset Marquis.

Los Angeles has it all, from the Getty Museum and the beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu to legendary shopping on Rodeo Drive. Explore the city's sights or simply luxuriate at the hotel, boasting two swimming pools and its own on-site recording studio. Drop into the Marquis' Bar 1200, where it's not unusual to find celebrated musicians. After a hard day's work, pamper yourself by indulging in a relaxing massage at the spa. And if you are going to live like an A-lister, you might as well eat like one - at the Asian fusion-inspired RESTAURANT at Sunset Marquis, where Michelin-starred chef Guillaume Burlion designed a menu befitting a king, Grammy or even Oscar-winner. Guests can also take pleasure in one of the brand new villas, including a 3,000-square foot luxury Presidential Villa.

... then try the Sunset Marquis hotel, the closest thing to a rock'n'roll hideout, and a place where Hollywood power players meet to make deals. The whole place screams 'privacy', from the quiet side street south of Sunset Blvd, to the lush gardens, and the maze of bungalows and villas. The hotel also features two pools, one in the busy courtyard, and a more secluded one near he villas. Also on site is a gourmet restaurant for people watching, and the 1200 bar, where again it's all about pricavy and cozyness. The rooms are spacious and elegant, most offering a separate living and dining room. Bathrooms vary in size based on room type, the one in the villas are extra large and feature both showers and standalone tubs. if you want to, you can spend a few days in totoal seclusion, the place is that big and tranquil, an oasis in the middle of loud West Hollywood. The service is top-notch, and you get the feeling that 'anything goes', since the staff has clearly seen it all. Forever my favorite spot in LA

Stayed here for a week and would come back. While it's a little shabby in places, in some ways that adds to the rock n roll vibe. As do all the photos and memorabilia. The rooms are a decent size and the shower was great. But the highlight is the bed which couldn't be more comfortable. Breakfast costs a fortune. Fifteen dollars for a fresh orange juice. But there are plenty of local alternatives on Sunset. Two swimming pools, my favourite was the smaller one which feels more private. Service is good. Location great. Really enjoyed my stay. And the occasional celebrity spotting adds to the fun.

So charming, beautiful and a perfectly unique property in the heart of WeHo. It took a minutte to get service and the heaters lit, but we loved our time here - can't wait to come back for cocktails under the trees!

My wife and I had to leave the Mondrian early because it is probably the worst hotel on Sunset: run down, filthy and uncompetent staff. We ended up at the Marquis. What a shock!!! Exceptional staff, great super clean rooms, great settings, 2 pools, impeccable service and super comfortable and tasty restaurant. What else can I say? We went from bad to exceptional in a blink. I would recommend the Sunset Marquis hands down.

Celebrating a milestone birthday at the Sunset Marquis was the best gift I could have received. At every staff encounter, I was greeted with a smile and a birthday wish. As much as I had dreaded the arrival of this day, the pain of the big number quickly disappeared. I felt like a princess. It was obvious the staff, especially our bellman who happily hefted our luggage to our upstairs villa, took great pride in their work, and their love of this hotel, its history and its owners spilled over to the guests they served. Our villa was pure perfection and attention to detail was apparent as we glided from room to room drinking it all in. A welcome gift of wine, cheese, bread, fresh fruit plus flat and sparkling water was spread across the bar. The full kitchen was spotless and equipped with everything for cooking and serving. The living area included a large dining table with comfortable chairs closest to the kitchen, a huge flat screen TV on the far end of the room with long sofas and comfy chairs. Oh, how I wish I had agreed to piano lessons as a child when I sat at the baby grand piano in the center of the room but later sang A Capella later in the luxurious shower with the waterfall draining every bit of freeway stress from my body as the adjustable shower head massaged my shoulders. The bathrooms were sparkling and offered a dozen fluffy towels and thoughtful amenities. The Molton Brown bath products were heavenly. I only wish I'd had time to also soak in the tempting tub -- next time! My birthday dinner was at the hotel's elegant "Cavatina," a foodie's delight. Our young server was attentive and endearing, the Caesar salad one of the best I've had, and the scallops fork tender and succulent. I tried to leave a morsel on my plate as a compliment to the chef but have to confess ate every flake, which, hopefully, was also a compliment. We were filled to capacity and couldn't think of dessert, but we wanted to linger in this magical setting, so my daughter suggested fresh berries. Our waiter delivered mine in a white parfait bowl set in the center of a large white plate rimmed with "Happy Birthday, and my name" swirled in dark chocolate. I made a wish this day would never end and blew out the candle. Back to the villa for after-dinner wine before retiring. The beds in this 2-room suite, with their feather-bed toppers, were absolutely dreamy, and we slept deeply. Oh, to sleep like that every night! In the morning, wrapped in complimentary robes and slippers, we enjoyed a birds-eye view of the pool below with its colorful chaises and umbrellas lined uniformly around the patio as we sipped espresso. Did I mention there were three coffee brewing methods provided: Nespresso, Keurig and a drip machine along with complimentary pods plus an assortment of teas? A room service breakfast was delicious, well priced and quickly delivered. The Sunset Marquis is just off the Sunset Strip, an easy walk to restaurants, shops and entertainment in Hollywood and Brentwood and a quick drive to Bel Air, UCLA and Santa Monica beach. We left the hotel to continue the celebration on the Central Coast knowing we had saved the best for first. The Sunset Marquis was truly a birthday wish come true.
