The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

Set against the breathtaking Allegheny Mountains with formal gardens and a trio of championship golf courses is The Greenbrier hotel. Located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, this Preferred Hotels & Resorts property, a member of the established Preferred Hotel Group, has a storied history beginning in the late 1700s when sulphur springs - and their benefits - were unearthed. Today The Greenbrier is a spectacular full-service resort boasting classic architecture with a mix of guestrooms and suites, plus freestanding cottages and estate houses. The 6,500-acre resort also features its own casino, shopping arcade, a collection of restaurants and eateries, and a roster of recreation. The Greenbrier, where golf has been played for more than a century, is also a stop on the PGA Tour.

The resort boasts eight casual-to-elegant dining venues with Prime 44 West, a clubby steakhouse named for NBA legend and West Virginia native Jerry West, being the newest concept to make its debut. You will also find a soda fountain and poolside dining, as well as a culinary retreat at the Golf Club. The Greenbrier Spa is a relaxing haven where guests enjoy signature treatments such as the Detox Kur and Mineral Body Mask. The sulphur springs that first attracted guests here some two centuries ago still remain a fundamental element in the quest for healing. While The Greenbrier offers many recreational diversions, such as a collection of indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, and jogging trails, it is the unexpected activities which are truly impressive. Enroll in a hands-on culinary class or off-road driving lesson. You can also sharpen your skills with falconry, trap and skeet shooting, and whitewater rafting.

Our first visit to the Greenbrier was such a wonderful experience it's hard to describe We've been to many resorts and have traveled extensively but, without hesitation, I can say that The Greenbrier is the crown jewel of resorts! We had dinner in the Main Dining Room the first night and it was fabulous. We ate in the 44 West Steakhouse the next night and had the best steak dinner we've ever eaten. No exaggeration! Everything about the Greenbrier is top notch, first class and - in my opinion - is America's finest resort! Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a get-away at the Greenbrier

Our most recent trip (April 2017) was a business gathering with my husband's work. We've visited The Greenbrier during each season starting in April 2015 and I can't pick my favorite. Spring is just beautiful, summer is not as hot as where we live, autumn is breathtaking and winter is magical. There is something extra special about being there during the Christmas season. The decorations add so much to the experience. My husband & I have been alone to celebrate an anniversary and we've been with our children as well. The indoor pool is just stunning, the spa is heaven and my husband enjoys the golf. Our daughters learned how to bowl at their bowling alley which was really fun. The outdoor infinity pool is surrounded by total beauty. We usually get coffee and baked goods for breakfast at the bakery. Our favorite dinner spot is Prime 44 and Drapers is perfect for lunch. The chocolates made onsite are great gifts to take home. I always order almond macaroons from the bakery when we arrive and pick them up the morning we are leaving. It is truly a special place. Not to even mention all the history with the bunker tour and chandeliers from Gone With the Wind. Worth every penny.

The Greenbrier is still a beautiful property and the staff are as friendly as they have ever been. We did observe some service slippage though which we believe is based upon staffing levels. The Bell service was slow as was the Valet parking. The individuals involved were apologetic and we knew that they were very sincere. On the plus side the food was very good and the Segway tour that we took was conducted by a delightful individual. The rooms are very comfortable though they do have a lack of outlets for electronics. It is my hope that staffing levels can be increased to return the service level to its previous extremely high standard.

Everyone at the Greenbrier was so friendly and welcoming. The staff upgraded our room at check in when they saw we had never visited before. We had dinner and breakfast in the main dining room. Our server entertained some children with a magic trick when they were getting fussy and on the verge of a tantrum. the decor, food, and tour was great. we only stayed one night but are already planning a week long trip for the future.

We went to the Greenbrier with a family of 7 across 3 generations to celebrate my father-in-law's 80th birthday. He had stayed there 75 years ago with his father and mother. We booked the Governors suite which was exactly the right fit for our large family. The hotel is nicely renovated and the grounds a spectacular. Lots of stuff to do like golf, tennis, ATV riding horseback, you name it. Service is good but given the size of the place can clearly not be as individual as in a boutique hotel. The decor is straight out of the 50s. Flowers and stripes wherever you look. Not our taste but just let yourself drop into the experience. The steakhouse was great but very pricey (and we are used to NYC prices). Overall a great experience and we would surely go back for the right occasion.
