The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

Set against the breathtaking Allegheny Mountains with formal gardens and a trio of championship golf courses is The Greenbrier hotel. Located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, this Preferred Hotels & Resorts property, a member of the established Preferred Hotel Group, has a storied history beginning in the late 1700s when sulphur springs - and their benefits - were unearthed. Today The Greenbrier is a spectacular full-service resort boasting classic architecture with a mix of guestrooms and suites, plus freestanding cottages and estate houses. The 6,500-acre resort also features its own casino, shopping arcade, a collection of restaurants and eateries, and a roster of recreation. The Greenbrier, where golf has been played for more than a century, is also a stop on the PGA Tour.

The resort boasts eight casual-to-elegant dining venues with Prime 44 West, a clubby steakhouse named for NBA legend and West Virginia native Jerry West, being the newest concept to make its debut. You will also find a soda fountain and poolside dining, as well as a culinary retreat at the Golf Club. The Greenbrier Spa is a relaxing haven where guests enjoy signature treatments such as the Detox Kur and Mineral Body Mask. The sulphur springs that first attracted guests here some two centuries ago still remain a fundamental element in the quest for healing. While The Greenbrier offers many recreational diversions, such as a collection of indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, and jogging trails, it is the unexpected activities which are truly impressive. Enroll in a hands-on culinary class or off-road driving lesson. You can also sharpen your skills with falconry, trap and skeet shooting, and whitewater rafting.

We love returning each fall. We always book a traditional room and it never disappoints with the décor, HVAC and amenities. The slow tub drain was fixed promptly and the housekeeping staff was lovely. We rented mountain bikes from the outdoor facility and got a great perspective of the neighborhoods and golf courses. Our Prime 44 Chef's table on Friday night was superb. The manager and staff always makes it a point to do a walkthrough and check on our experience. JJ's sport lounge was great for Saturday afternoon football and we had 6 different games on. The one server even got my wife a blanket when the AC kicked on. Above and beyond once again. Charlotte, our favorite server at Prime 44 even sent down a gift to one of our friends during Saturday dinner at the Forum. The casino is always very classy and we won at Roulette again. See you all this spring!

The tour of the Bunkers that was to accommodate Congress in the event of nuclear fallout, not a nuclear blast, was truly amazing. Our tour guide, Frank Houghton, was very informative and entertaining. The tour lasted 90 minutes and there was some walking and stairs that were required. Construction of the bunker was publicized as an addition to the West Wing. It was interesting to learn that business meetings, trade shows, auto actions, etc. were held under the pretense that this is what the space was intended for. We walked thru the sleeping quarters that were to be used by Congress. They were bunk beds that would give anybody claustrophobia. We viewed the dining room that was designed to get Congress in and out as fast as possible simply by an illusion. I'll leave you with a question: Are the bunkers approached by going up or down? You'll have to visit them to learn the truth.

Visited for a long weekend with my mother and husband. This place is just gorgeous. We had booked the least expensive gable rooms and we're pleasantly surprised to be upgraded. Our room even had a balcony and wonderful views. Many many great features, special thanks for arrival champagne and special birthday treatment. Some not so good - dinner service in main dining is rushed and not special - food was so-so for high $$; we didn't get turndown service the last night - which was disappointing; and there weren't many lunch choices. The outdoor pool and great service there was a favorite! Valet your car....your at the Greenbrier! It's worth not having the hassle of finding a parking place.

Our family has been visiting The Greenbriar since 1980 and estimate this last visit to be out 25th. Hard to know where to start, as the facility with the guiding hand of Jim Justice ie remarkable. Since the catastrophic flood just over a year ago, the golf courses are rapidly returning to their former championship status. The new Casino is beautiful and you must be a registered guest to enter. Not feeling well, just make an appointment with their renowned Clinic. Beautiful location with countless activities and truly caring employees.

Our first trip to the Greenbrier was better than I ever expected. I am always cautious about going to a highly rated hotel but we were blown away by the service, great rooms, food, golf and the value of everything. We stayed at the Greenbrier for 6 nights and wished we could stay longer but we had to get back to reality.
