Greenbrier Resort WV major disappointment

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This 5 star resort is not worth 1 star. The restaurants are dismal. We ate at 3 out of the 4 restaurants. The steak was overcooked at their premier Prime 44 restaurant, the chicken tasted like rubber at the Forum, the fish was doused in old bay seasoning to the point that it burned your tongue and it was served cold, at Sam Snead restaurant. The service was slow to the point that we sat for 1 hour before we received the appetizer. The amenities, which you are being charged $39 per day, are either closed or there is a hefty extra charge. For example the indoor tennis court is $90 for 1 hour, the gym classes are $35, The bunker tour had a heavy paint fume smell which made us sick. The escape room nothing worked, so it ruined the fun. The room itself is spacious, however the bathroom sink was clogged and the thermostat does not go below 67 degrees. The train runs next to the property and blows the horn a few times a night. We asked to shorten our reservation by one day because we were having a dismal time, and we were told there would be an early departure penalty of over $500.

Perfect mix of adventure and elegance!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Wow! Pictures do not do this place justice! There is no place like The Greenbrier! This was our first visit. As avid cruisers and Disney resort go-ers, we have finally found the high end resort that these other vacations TRY to mimic. LOVE, LOVE LOVE that The Greenbrier has high standards for guest dress and behavior and actually enforces them so everyone can have a wonderful time! That being said, the high standards do not mean snobbery. The staff is very welcoming and friendly and out to make you feel valued and comfortable. This high level of southern hospitality also rubs off on the other guests! We found ourselves chatting with lovely people from all over as we walked from place to place or sat and sipped drinks in the many beautiful rooms. No shortage of volunteers to take your picture or give recommendations for their own favorite activities. The timeless elegance is amazing, yet somehow manages to mix well with the down and dirty outdoorsy activities. Shooting, fishing, horseback riding etc. We went on the Polaris RZR Tour. This was "real" extreme off-roading, not your typical, mild, resort level excursion. We've done similar tours in Belize and in Cozumel, but this one tops them all. Would definitely recommend for a confident driver and thrill seeking passengers. We came back exhilarated and absolutely filthy! It was absolutely hysterical to walk through Dorothy Draper's masterpiece with mud on our faces. The other guests laughed with us. Some, having done the activity before were in on the joke, and others commented good naturedly "whatever you just did it looks like fun!" 2 hours later we were elegantly dressed and eating filets in Prime 44. Love the dichotomy! So fun! We are a family of 4 (40-something parents with teen daughters) who enjoy fine dining, adventure, and trying new things. The Greenbrier checked all of our boxes. (Note... we went on Easter weekend. There were many extended families with many small children. The staff did beautifully keeping them occupied with egg hunts, outside play groups, craft activities etc. But there were still quite a lot of small children, some not being as looked after by their parents as one would hope. For example, Saturday late afternoon, the Cameo Ballroom was a giant free for all of running and screaming as parents drank cocktails in the lounge. This went on for about an hour. They must have need told by the staff to quiet down as we noted an immediate stoppage at one point, but if you need more peace, would avoid a holiday weekend.)

America's Reort Indeed!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

The Greenbrier, America's Resort does not disappoint! The Genuine Southern Hospitality provided by Arlene, the Manager, Adam, the Doorman, and Steve, the Bellman made my stay truly exceptional! I even learned about Wassail from Teresa...just delicious! I didn't want to leave and I think that says it all!

Women's club conference

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I felt like I was stepping back in time. Everything was so colorful and the chandeliers were magnificent . We did self parking. Which I highly recommend. There were several conferences going on so check out would have been time consuming if you had to wait for valet parking

Regarding our trip to The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV, what a treat! From beginning to end we felt like we were in heaven. The place is gorgeous, the food is tremendous, and the staff just outstanding! Our kids, aged 8 and 11, rank it as the best vacation ever...and that is saying a lot! We will definitely return...
