Reviews for Essque Zalu Zanzibar
Essque is such a beautiful place. The staff are particularly quite sweet and helpful although they don't really speak much English which I think can be easily rectified but I guess that adds to the whole holiday, away from home vibe. The food was delicious and they had a good spread during breakfast particularly but through the week we stayed there wasn't much variety to the menu. This forced me to try pretty much everything on the menu & there were hits and misses. The cocktails were divine!!! Really enjoyed staying here & im actually looking forward to returning in a few months.

I don't even know where to begin. The resort is breathtaking. Our rooms were both spacious and charming. From the tropical gardens to the waves crashing at high tide, everywhere we looked was like we were in a painting. The kids club made it super convenient to enjoy a little kid free time. We loved having the kiddie pool and the grown up pool to choose from. The restaurant on the jetty provided a nice alternative to the main dining room. We enjoyed all of our meals. It was a lovely vacation.
My visit to the Essque Zalu was wonderful. From the welcoming staff to the ambiance...everything about the hotel is luxurious. I'd especially like to thank Barbara and Tarryn who were extremely attentive and took care of all our needs. They also serve a variety of foods to cater to everyone's taste...both local and international.I would definitely recommend for everyone visiting Zanzibar to sty at this majestic hotel...i.m sure you'll love it as much as i do.Ā

This is the second time I have stayed in Zanzibar and the Gold Zanzibar is simply the best hotel around. It is a large sprawling estate with great rooms, a large pool and plenty of eating and drinking options. The buffet is second to none and the staff are super friendly. Couldn't be happier
We spent Easter weekend at Essque Zalu, my husband, mum in law and kids, 12, 9 and 1. What a beautiful small size resort. The part that impressed me, the cleanliness. The rooms, were immaculate, under the bed, in the bathrooms, the grounds, gardens, pool. Very clean. We stayed in the newly built 4 bedroom beach front villa. Food is an important part of a holiday for me. The breakfast buffet left a lot to be desired, as there was no onsite cooking in the dining room, eggs, crepes and pancakes precooked and sitting in a chafing dish. The selection was limited as well, with no bakery area. Instead a bread basket was brought to the table, creating a lot of waste. You'd eat the couple things you desired and left the rest behind, the same on every table. Lunch was delicious. A la carte, with a limited selection, but every item I ate over the three days was great. Dinner the first night was at the seafood buffet with paying an additional supplement for FB guests. Restaurants in Zanzibar never seem to be able to do seafood buffets right. Seafood was limited, no lobster or prawns, but they did have a beef roast and a roasted chicken?!? Regardless the food was good. Second evening was a la carte, I had an amazing roasted 1/2 chicken breast with mushrooms, taters and a sauce I can't recall. But it was perfect, not dried which is typical of chicken breast. And made with fresh mushrooms not the usual tinned ones The third night was a dinner buffet. What they weren't able to do for breakfast buffet they managed for dinner. The food was delicious, hot, fresh and varied. Plenty of staff to top up the food and serve it in style. The service at the hotel was atrocious, not because the staff wasn't kind, because they were. There just wasn't enough of them for an Easter weekend. Butter for your rolls would take 25 mins. Ketchup, mustard, chillies, salt and pepper averaged the same. By the time you were done with your meal, your condiments would arrive. For the last evening we were borrowing from our neighbors table. Dessert at lunch took 45 meals to arrive after we had finished with our meal. Just as we were leaving it showed up. This was the third time ordering their amazing chocolate orange tart, but this time they had thrown something onto a plate, nowhere close to resembling what we had had the previous two times. As we were already leaving, we didn't have the dessert. Drinks and coffee would show up late after numerous reminders. We ordered popcorn to our room for a rainy day movie, it never showed. They advertised DVD players and movies in the room, when we inquired the staff said they had no knowledge of ever offering this. Mosquito spray canisters in our room were empty , we requested housekeeping to replenish them, after three calls and a visit to reception, they were provided. And finally after a nice hot bath....the bathtub drained onto the floor of the bathroom, 4" of water on the floor. While the grounds were beautiful they were small. This is not the resort where you can go for a walk or a bike ride. The bikes they did offer were for adults only, so my 9 year old sadly had to sit it out, and with the only place to ride your bikes, outside of the resort, on the dirt road to the nearby local shops. Not appealing or safe. I was disappointed that they didn't have a games room or library, somewhere to play chess, pool, read or board games...as it rains a lot in Zanzibar. The salt water infinity pool was clean and a good size for lounging around and for the kids to play. As well it was visually beautiful, as the resort was perched on the edge of the ocean. There was no beach, but that's typical of many Znz resorts. Not a surprise. Would I come back? Yes for the food and the cleanliness and if I heard the service had improved. No, if I wanted to spend time riding bikes, walking around a resort or the kids wanted space to run around and do more then swim. It all depends on what you want out of your stay in Zanzibar.
