Reviews for Essque Zalu Zanzibar
Pros 1) clean pool area with plenty of chair 2) reasonable prices for food and drinks 3) great view 4) friendly luggage guy Cons 1) emailed them to ask for airport transfer, currency exchange, and excursions and no response. Apparently, the person quit and no one was monitoring the inbox. We could found out upon arriving there was an additional charge per person. This was not an issue but would have appreciated communication. The manager told me he would find out what happened but did not get back to me. 2)You have to walk up to the pool bar to order drinks instead of having someone come and take your order for the majority of the time. The pool staff were busy chatting among themselves rather than take orders. Upon ordering my drink, I gave them my room number and assumed they would just charge it to my room as that's what I did the previous day. Apparently, you are supposed to sign for the bill after ordering which i did not do because no one brought me a bill anytime after I ordered a drink. On the last day, the pool bartender ended up coming and knocking on my room door asking for me to pay at the front desk for my drink. I found this weird and was also upset because I was napping. 3) they kept on having conflicting information on when you settle your hotel bill. When I arrived, they said when I checked out. Then, the next day, the receptionist said I needed to pay immediately when we got back from stone town. The day after, they said I could pay when I checked out, then I was told I had to pay immediately. Overall, I felt like I was constantly being told to pay my bill and felt like they didn’t think I would pay my bill. They had my credit card on file so not sure what the issue was. I spoke to the director about it right before I left and she apologized as everything should've been charged to the credit card on file; i should've only been asked for approval of the charges upon checking out. The director said she was unaware of the issues since they have a daily staff debrief to talk about any issues with customers. I had found that surprising since I was clearly not happy everyday I was there. She mentioned she would pack a dinner for me upon the day I was leaving. The dinner box was not ready at the time I told them I was leaving at. I left. They called my driver 15 minutes after I left to tell me that I forgot my food. We had selected this place originally because we wanted to relax in a luxury resort after 6 days of safari. Unfortunately, this was a stressful stay. 1) constantly being asked the same questions over and over again by different staff members about our check out time 2) being asked to pay the hotel bill twice a day like we were going to skip out on the bill 3) the phone to order room service or to the front desk didn't work and wasn't fixed upon our request 4) lack of service by the pool area consider staying at a different resort. we paid over 500 a night and it was definitely a waste of money and wish I couldve had a refund.
Although we weren't staying at this hotel, we had seen it from a dive boat so walked up the beach to investigate what was there. It appeared that the hotel was undergoing renovations at the time, as there were only 3 other people in the grounds. The staff invited us to stay, have some drinks and use the pool. We stayed there all day, chatting to staff, drinking mocktails, using the pool and generally having a fabulously relaxing day. This was a very special find, and is highly recommended.

My family and I stayed here for 5 nights in October 2017. Our sea-front suite room was immaculately clean and had a spectacularly panoramic view of the ocean. The room had strong air conditioning, firm beds, a HD TV, bar fridge and roomy luggage area. The pier and sea water pool was definitely the most enjoyable part of our stay, especially considering the beach really is not very appealing on this part of the coast. Most of the time, the tide was in and when it was out the beach is infested with sea urchins and not as clean as the sand in other parts of the island, such as Michamvi. The Hotel has a great location and we found it easy to get to other parts of Nungwi and the rest of Zanzibar. Being strictly vegetarian, we had a few oddly prepared meals especially on the first day of our stay - off the a la carte menu. However the rest of our meals were generally enjoyable and filling. Most meals took very long to prepare though so we'd have to place orders well in advance. The spa is highly recommended though slightly over-priced on a few of the treatments such as the pedicure & manicure. However their facilities are second to none and their steam and sauna rooms are very enjoyable. The staff are professional, friendly and polite and attended to various requests in a timely manner, including one for a very late check-out on our last day. Having come from staying a couple of nights at a slightly cheaper Resort in Michamvi, we did enjoy our stay though felt that the nightly rate could be lower and that the restaurant could handle their orders quicker. Nevertheless, a very enjoyable stay with all the amenities that one could ask for. Don't forget to visit the nearby turtle aquarium - its totally unforgettable!
This was the perfect place to end our safari...The hotel is chic, extremely clean, with amazing rooms, service and food.. We spent 4 days around the pool enjoying the sun, great views and awesome service..The only reason I did not give this place 5 stars was because there really wasn't any beach.. It sits up on a small cliff so the view was incredible.. The food at the 2 restaurants was really good, but I particularly enjoyed the BBQ night. There was a buffet full of great BBQ dishes as well as salads, vegetables etc. The band playing that night was great as well and had a lot of us up on our feet dancing.I would like to give a special thank you to the service people by the pool who were the best in the hotel..Attentive and friendly those guys made our vacation...

This place is simply marvelous! I have traveled to many beach destinations, and Essque Zalu Zanzibar is by far my favorite of them all!! The setting is magical with the beautiful infinity pool stretching to the crystal turquoise sea, and the amazing Jetty that sits far out into the ocean - you can see the sunrise and sunset there!! The Suites are spacious and beautifully designed, very comfortable and the air conditioning works wonders on a hot day. The service is top of the line and the staff are very friendly. We put the pool barman to work during our stay and the drinks he concocted were refreshing and tasty. The food is really amazing, the menu is ever changing and we enjoyed great fresh seafood as well as steak. The spa is a real treat, the Masai Ritual treatment is worth it - a wonderful holistic experience. They have a great kid's center which is the size of a day care - perfect for kids under 10. The staff really catered to our every desire - we will be returning to this beautiful lodge, loved every second of our stay!
