Reviews for Essque Zalu Zanzibar
Architecture, gardens, views and rooms all stunning! Beach is a bit of a challenge as you must wait for Low tide to be able to swim. If it’s high tide, you really won’t be able to swim. Food is excellent and resort is beautiful. The people selling souvenirs are a bit pushy so you almost have to avoid walking by them, if you can! The hotel is in a more private area which had its advantages because it is more secure. We walked all the way to kendwa from the hotel making occasional stops to take a swim near the low tide areas. We are an adventurous family so the walk all the way to Kendwa was really nice! Although a Long walk, the stops to swim and have lunch made it really enjoyable! The water is absolutely stunning. I have been to the Maldives and the water is just as beautiful. Although the hotel and staff are really great, I think I would stay in kendwa next time, as there is really more of a beach. The hotels in Kendwa are set back from the water and just require you walk on the sand to reach the water and swim versus having to descend stairs and wait for Low tide to swim at Essque Zalu.

One of the best locations in the Northern Beach of Zanzibar, the best place to enjoy and relax. The jetty during the day is refreshing with an awesome collection of cocktails, and the best location to experience the sunset with the silhouette profile of the thatched roof of the main hotel building. Night time the pool is the feast for photographers, and the dining experience is top. I would rate the rooms 4.5/5...with the only suggestion to improve the in-room experience with an upgrade of the tv sets...(to something more digital).
We spent 4 nights on a HB "diet"! The place has no personality, rooms are ok. Good AC-s, very quiet. Food is average and for sea food you have to pay extra!!!! Half Board means you only get the low end food, for the high end you need to pay!!! Ridiculous ! Drinks expensive, not included. No beach, pool ok-ish. Bicycles, for use: disaster! None of them is having brakes! For lunch we choose to go out of the hotel. Found a nice beach restaurant, better food for way better prices. The general feeling is the one of a "Turkish riviera all-inclusiv resort" (I am sure European people knows what I am saying). Clearly overrated!

This place is simply stunning. The setting is magical with the beautiful infinity pool stretching to the crystal blue sea, and the amazing pier that juts out into the ocean - you can see the sunrise and sunset there while enjoying a wonderful meal or just a drink if you prefer!! There is a very limited beach, but the pool and pier make up for it. We were 2 couple and we stayed in villa #2 which was incredible with it's private pool, 4 bedrooms, massage room....well you get the idea. The villa was spacious and beautifully designed, very comfortable and the air conditioning works wonders on a hot day. The service was good and the staff generally friendly. Ni Luh Purnami who manages the spa was instrumental in helping us work through communication challenges and keeping things simple. While she is titled "Spa Manager", she went above and beyond to the area of overall guest accommodation. are very friendly. The food was taste, the menu is ever changing and we enjoyed great fresh seafood as well as steak. Incredibly, we mentioned to our waiter that we were sorry we had missed a lasagna selection, he mentioned it to the chef who came to our table to tell us that he would make it special for us the next day. How often do you get that kind of service? It is about an hour from Stone Town and the airport which limited some of our planned site seeing. We didn't go into the village, but did enjoy several tours....sunset cruise and snorkling. I would recommend it for a secluded get-away.

This may be one of the most beautifully designed hotels ever. From the lobby entrance and walkout to the pool to the wonderful dock/pier over the water this place is stunning. The rooms are large and equally attractive with all amenities. Service around the grounds excellent. We also liked the fact that there were very few people around the weekend we stayed which made it feel even more special. There are 2 main restaurants - one in the lobby area and the other out on the pier. The latter serves seafood and while looking more basic is the better of the 2 restaurants. The lobby restaurant struggled on the mains - although they earn points for presentation and effort...also with breakfast. the yogurt, fresh fruits and fresh juices are amazing. The breakfast mains need work. House keeping gave us no water on day 2 as the bottles we had bought were in the room - I guess they figured we had enough. No bed turn down/mosquito net set up the 2nd night either.... but these are minor points for what is otherwise a truly lovely place to stay. Be advised there is no real beach to use but the pool more than compensates. As well, the property is located on the far north of the island which means over an hour to Stone Town. Highly recommended!
