Essque Zalu Zanzibar

The location was absolutely stunning, with fantastic views from the moment you walk into reception. The building and rooms are beautifully maintained, and setup for both morning and evening. We stayed in the honeymoon suite which was exceptional; spacious, regularly attended to, and always spotless. Every member of staff was friendly, funny, and incredibly attentive; we felt genuinely welcomed from the moment we arrived. A special shoutout to Neema, Amina, and Mutundu for really making our visit extra special. The food was also impressive, offering excellent menu choices and a great rotation throughout the week with locations also changing slightly too - entertainment is also provided most nights. A truly memorable stay in every way.

We had a fantastic stay at Essque Zalu Nungwi and would definitely come back and recommend it, though there are a few things that could be improved. Firstly the hotel is truly beautiful and the beach is a lovely spot for a walk or shell picking, but not swimming or sunning (though be prepared for a change of standard if you leave the boundary of the hotel!) The staff were outstanding – warm, hardworking, and genuinely welcoming. Special mention to James and Matteo from the animation team and lovely Mwana in the shop, but everyone we met was lovely. The rooms and grounds are immaculate, the saltwater pool spotless, and we always felt very safe with hardworking security on-site. The food was great, with plenty of variety at dinner/breakfast and themed nights like seafood and Swahili cuisine. Though not fine dining, there was always something tasty to try. The Afrobeats etc music around the pool suited the atmosphere perfectly, and the aqua aerobics, stretching sessions, and evening entertainment added fun to our holiday. On the other hand, the WiFi was poor, and the shop was pricey with limited options – limited snacks & drinks, or recognisable sun cream/SPF brands (only ones with whitening cream!) There’s no pool bar or snack menu, and wine and spa treatments were very expensive. It would also be nice if a few soft drinks were included with half board. A couple of odd touches too – music with ads playing at times (suggesting a free streaming account - unusual for any hotel but especially one of this calibre), and one afternoon loud impromptu Russian karaoke around the pool disrupted the otherwise relaxed vibe. The mini fridge in the room was also quite small. Despite a few quirks, this is a beautiful, friendly, and relaxing resort with a genuinely happy atmosphere. With a few small tweaks, it could be flawless – and we’d happily return.
