Lismacue House in Bansha, Ireland

In lovely Tipperary, the lavish Lismacue House is a mix of old country elegance and Irish splendor. Guests have full run of this breathtaking Georgian Country House because it is an all or nothing proposition, which bodes well with large families and couples traveling in tandem. The house was built in 1813, replacing a more modest 1665 dwelling, and is surrounded by 200 emerald acres. Lismacue House embraces its 19th-century roots with forgotten details, from delicate plaster and high ceilings to sweeping staircases and original pine flooring. Bedrooms include king or queen-size beds, deep soaking tubs and windows framing picturesque views of the stunning Irish countryside. Your stay includes a personal chef, meals as requested, prepared picnic lunches on fishing and walking days, and all the privacy you can hope for.

The elegant public rooms speak to a different era. There is the drawing room with its Gothic overtones, original wallpaper, and chairs grouped around the charming fireplace. The dining room can seat up to 12 guests on original Hicks chairs, while the library is a cozy room with elegant French influences and views of the croquet lawn. How you choose to spend your time while in residence is up to you. There are several challenging golf courses nearby and, if these do not satisfy your needs, a helicopter is available to ferry you to faraway fairways. Trout fishing in the Ara River can prove to be a peaceful afternoon, while horseback riding adds a genteel element to your stay. Of course, motoring along the narrow byways yields unexpected discoveries, such as abandoned castles and cloistered abbeys.

I was on the hunt for a venue for a afternoon tea party to mark my mother's 60th birthday. After lots of emails and referrals, I was put in touch with Kate of Lismacue. I am originally from Cahir and have passed the gates of Lismacue House 100's of times but had not idea what beautiful estate and house lied at the end of the avenue. From our first email, Kate was helpful and friendly. We spent months exchanging emails & voice mails - all of which were personable & helpful. Kate put together a wonderful afternoon tea menu, she even baked a scrumptious birthday cake. On the day of the party, Kate & her team couldn't have being more accommodating - hiding cars so as not ruin the surprise - a lovely fire in the drawing room and then in to a beautiful set dining room for a spectacular afternoon tea. It is no mean feat but all 22 ladies were blown away by the venue, the food, the staff and the host. Lismacue House is a living breathing piece of Irish history kept alive by the Nicholson Family. Highly highly recommend it.

It was an experience like none other. You arrive to a time and place that is both magical and the stuff of movies. An 18th Century home hosted by Jim and Kate who are as warm and welcoming as the surroundings. Views of the Galtee Mountains and a fully functioning horse farm replete with a number of spring foals who, along with the house dog, Luther, greeted us upon arrival. Wonderful nature walks, trout fishing, golf are all at your disposal. The house is strategically updated to preserve the patina of a bygone era without sacrificing modern convenience (hot water, wifi)

Simply a magnificent experience-romantic and relaxing. We discovered this place last year via Hidden Ireland, and true to the sites promise, a stay here is a step into a world of spectacular natural beauty, glorious Georgian architecture and (beyond delicious culinary school-trained) home cooking. Kate and Jim are natural hosts; respectful, accommodating and easy-going. We enjoyed mornings of long walks watching the Nicholson’s thoroughbreds grazing, afternoons in sleepy local pubs, and evenings reading and chatting by the fire. And, in spite of what you might assume from a 300 year old country house, the internet works just fine! John F., Brooklyn
