Cottage Grove Inn in Calistoga, Napa County, California

Cozy cottages with peaked roofs and pastel-colored shutters are a welcome sight after a day of wine tasting. Each cottage at Cottage Grove Inn is uniquely outfitted – sink into an overstuffed chair in front of a wood-burning fireplace on hardwood floors made from salvaged old-growth fir from an old whiskey distillery or into a wicker rocker outside, enjoying a Napa cabernet. The nearby town Calistoga – with its two-lane roads and ban on fast food restaurants – offers an equally quaint take on life.

Dig into a hearty breakfast by the fireplace in the breakfast nook. Borrow a bike for a day of riding along idyllic terrain, stopping at wineries en route. Have a glass of syrah at one of the area’s family-owned hidden jewels. Picnic in the vineyard. Nap. Unwind with one of the day's purchases in your cottage whirlpool.

We recently traveled from San Diego up to the Napa area to see what the recent fires did to the wine industry. Although the fires were terrible for those involved, we were happy to see many wineries open and our favorite lodging, the Cottage Grove Inn, fully unscathed! We love the cozy and private cottages, although we couldn't use our fireplace due to the air quality....still a little smokey!

While the cottages are beautiful and the staff is friendly, their shady business practices ensure that my wife and I will never stay with them again. After checking out (I was handed an invoice that I did not sign and left quickly due to my wife feeling ill), I noticed there was an extra $28.50 charge on the room on top of what we had already paid. I called in to ask about the charge and was told that it was part of the pet fee. As I had already paid the pet fee posted on the website when I booked through their website, I asked that they take off the charge. The clerk I spoke with complied and the charge was reversed. That was two weeks ago, and today we noticed that we were charged the $28.50 AGAIN. No warning, no email, no call. Had my wife not been diligent about checking her accounts, this could have gone unnoticed. I immediately called and was told that this was due to bookkeeping (although when I called in last time and spoke with the front desk, THEY WERE ABLE TO REVERSE THE CHARGE). Awful customer service and ridiculously poor management. Don't stay there unless you don't mind extra charges showing up on your credit card weeks later.

Excellent cottage with comfy beds, yummy and healthy breakfast, walk to town, and very friendly and helpful staff that gave us tips on where to hike and directions to places. We did not hear any road noise.

A great adult only resort. Only down side was the sky light on the roof although pretty it lets lots of morning light in. Would be great to have a shade over it somehow. Rooms were large and adorably decorated this hote doesn’t miss a thing when it comes to items in the room. Enjoyed the kitchenette for all our food and drinks. Loved the nightly free happy hour as well as the great staff, free bikes and comfy bed. I’d stay here again in a minute! Will be back for sure.

Loved this little place. Rooms were cosy and warmed upon arrival. Bit of an odd layout to the room but still nice. Couldn't use fireplace due a spare the air day but will check ahead next time and as we really wanted to have it going. Breakfast was excellent, well thought out, great selection.
