Stunning Property, Unfortunately We Couldn’t Sleep

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

This is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed at. We booked a one-night stay to relax and celebrate a birthday, and the property itself was absolutely stunning. The front desk was extremely helpful and welcoming during check-in, and I really appreciated that they called us as soon as our room was ready. The adults-only jacuzzi was definitely the highlight of the trip. It was such a peaceful and relaxing experience and exactly what we were hoping for during our stay. The property has such a beautiful, serene atmosphere, and you can tell a lot of thought goes into creating a relaxing experience for guests. Unfortunately, the one major issue that really impacted our stay was the noise from the room above us. There was constant, heavy stomping from approximately 9 PM until 7 AM. We were there specifically to relax and celebrate a birthday, so getting a good night’s sleep was a big part of what we were hoping for. I eventually had to call the front desk at 2 AM to complain, but unfortunately the noise continued and we didn’t get an ounce of rest that night. I completely understand that some noise between rooms is unavoidable, but for a property that is centered around relaxation and wellness, I do think quiet hours could be enforced more consistently, especially when a guest has already contacted the front desk about excessive noise in the middle of the night. Despite that, I would absolutely love to return because the property itself is truly special. If you’re a light sleeper, I would recommend requesting an upstairs room if possible! I hope we get the chance to come back and experience the peaceful stay we were hoping for next time.

Beautiful hotel - would definitely return

Beautiful hotel set in Carmel valley (weather so much better than Carmel village). Rooms were so comfortable with amazing mountain views; great and spacious bathrooms. Lovely pool, perfect for soaking up afternoon rays. Grounds and gardens are a delight - Rose garden is stunning. Service generally was good although service (and kitchen) at dinner one evening really struggled to cope when there was a wedding on. Would definitely return.

Beautiful hotel and gardens with declining quality service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We like Bernadus and returning guests for the past 10 years. The hotel, the grounds and the gardens are beautiful but unfortunately, we feel that the quality of their staff services specially front desk and restaurant have declined. The restaurant food quality is not as good for the price and the services is super slow! The front desk staff treat you transactional and not at the level expected from a 5-star hotel.

An Unforgettable Carmel Valley Escape with great perks

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We recently spent four nights at Bernardus Lodge & Spa to celebrate a milestone birthday, and it exceeded every expectation. We intentionally chose Carmel Valley over Monterey or Carmel-by-the-Sea to avoid the larger tourist crowds, and it was the perfect decision. The lodge offers a peaceful, scenic retreat while still being close enough for easy day trips to Carmel, Monterey, and other nearby attractions. The property sits in a beautiful valley surrounded by vineyards. A fun bit of history for future guests: the original owner also owned the Bernardus Winery and tasting room in the village. Although they now operate separately following his passing, the wine-country charm and connection are still very much part of the experience. The Exceptional Service One of the things that impressed us most was the outstanding service. From the moment we arrived, every staff member was warm, professional, and genuinely welcoming. The drive through the vineyard to the circular entrance sets the tone for the stay. Check-in was seamless, and we were greeted with a chilled glass of Bernardus Sauvignon Blanc. Throughout our visit, the staff consistently went out of their way to make us feel welcome, especially Front Desk Manager Julie Lono, whose kindness and attention to detail made our stay even more memorable. Valet and self-parking are both $30, and the valet team was remarkably quick, helpful and friendly. Complimentary Mercedes-Benz Driving Program One of the most unique perks of staying here is the complimentary Mercedes-Benz guest driving program. The lodge offers a fleet of new Mercedes-Benz vehicles on a first-come, first-served basis for up to four hours. During our stay, we had a blast taking a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, an SL AMG, and the electric G-Class for scenic drives through Carmel Valley and along the famous 17-Mile Drive. It's an experience you simply won't find at most luxury resorts. Beautiful Rooms & Thoughtful Amenities The rustic lobby is elegant, spotless, and inviting. Our spacious king room featured a large balcony overlooking the pool. One of our favorite touches was the complimentary minibar, stocked with beverages, snacks, and Bernardus wine. The bathroom was gorgeous, with marble finishes, a spacious walk-in shower, and an oversized soaking tub. The air conditioning kept the room perfectly comfortable during the warm afternoons, while the gas fireplace made the cool mornings especially cozy. One helpful note: the room's large sofa does not convert into a sleeper, so if you're traveling with additional guests, be sure to request a cot in advance. Outstanding Dining & Birthday Celebration We enjoyed breakfast in the dining room several mornings, and every meal was outstanding. Coming from Los Angeles, we were pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the prices were for the quality of the food. Dinner was equally exceptional, with attentive, knowledgeable servers (thank you, Kerry!) and dining managers who stopped by to ensure everything was perfect. Since we were celebrating a milestone birthday, the staff truly went above and beyond. Julie Lono arranged an unforgettable surprise that included a delicious red velvet birthday cake, two dozen beautiful fresh roses, and a card signed by the staff. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture that made our celebration even more special. Pool & Grounds Although we didn't use the pool, the main pool area is beautiful, featuring a large rectangular pool and adjacent hot tub. There's also a separate adults-only hot tub tucked away on the property, which looked wonderfully peaceful. Final Thoughts Bernardus Lodge & Spa is certainly a luxury property, but the outstanding service, elegant accommodations, complimentary Mercedes-Benz driving program, fully stocked minibar, welcoming atmosphere, and thoughtful amenities make it well worth the price. We left feeling genuinely pampered and appreciated, and it ranks among the best luxury hotel experiences we've had. We can't wait to return!

"The Bernardus Lodge was wonderful. My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend at the lodge and found it very relaxing, romantic and the service was beyond exceptional. They were attentive to every need and always made us feel like their top priority. We also visited the spa and had a wonderful experience. We will definitely go back!"
