Bernardus Lodge and Spa

Came here for business and ended up extending my stay with my wife and kid. On the positives the property is really spectacular. There’s a bocce and croquet field surrounded by stunning gardens. There a spa with a steam and sauna room as well as a well kept set of tennis courts. Everything together gives the place a really luxurious feel. Unfortunately the service is not what you would expect for the price you pay. When we arrived, we had to bug the staff a few times to check if our room was ready, even though they said they would send a text and this was after a couple of other families who arrived after us good their rooms. The power also went out during our stay, but I suppose I’ll chalk that up to a one time thing. The restaurant on site (Lucia) is has delicious food, but very very slow service. We waiting probably 20 min before the manager finally swung around to take our order, and we found ourselves frequently having to flag staff down for things throughout the night. All and all, not a bad option, but I would have expected more elevated service for this price points. I would also say this plays skews toward an older (and less diverse) crowd and isn’t the more family friendly.

The reason I gave the hotel and team here all 5's was that we enjoyed our stay so much we didn't want to leave! From the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out, we felt welcome, appreciated and as if the team was genuinely happy to have us there!

This place is a gem. Wonderful location and excellent accommodations as well as service and the incomparable Lucia restaurant.

Such a beautiful and peaceful stay. Everything about this place felt relaxing and recharging — from the atmosphere to the service. While you’re there , highly recommend to make a reservation at their restaurant “Lucia”. One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. Every dish was amazing, fresh, beautifully presented, and you can tell so much care goes into the food here. Amazing hotel and service! Quiet, peaceful truly amazing service. It felt like the perfect little reset.thank you!!

Bernardus in Monterey was one of the highlights of our trip. The restaurant perfectly captures the spirit of California coastal dining with an incredibly creative menu built around fresh local ingredients from both land and sea. Every dish felt thoughtful and beautifully executed — from the pristine seafood to the locally sourced meats and produce. The Seabass and the Octopus were unmatched. Savory and fresh. The chefs clearly take pride in showcasing the region, and you can taste the quality in every bite. The seafood was exceptionally fresh, the flavors were balanced and inventive without being overdone, and the presentation was elegant yet approachable. Pair that with warm service and the stunning Carmel Valley atmosphere, and it made for an unforgettable dining experience. If you’re visiting Monterey or Carmel and want a meal that truly reflects the local food culture with creativity and sophistication, Bernardus is absolutely worth the visit.
