Just wanted to thank the staff at Bernardus Lodge & Spa for a wonderful stay. The one bedroom suite was perfect. The view was beautiful and the family had the best sleep in one of the best hotel beds. Dinner at their restaurant was relaxing, service was good and the food was exceptional.

We booked a stay for two nights at the lodge. However, when we arrived we got the unfortunate news that they double booked our room the first night because of a wedding. We got kicked out and had to stay at another -a much less luxurious- hotel. It was a very disappointing start of the holiday we looked forward to for months. The next day we finally got to stay at the lodge. As compensation for the first night our rooms were upgraded and we received a voucher for a free stay valid for one year. Unfortunately we weren't able to use the voucher because of the incredible distance between home and Carmel. Apart from the huge disappointment the first night, the rest of our stay was wonderful. The lodge was incredibly beautiful. The view over the winery is one of the prettiest I've ever seen. It's very relaxing to be at the pool with a glass of Bernardus wine. On top of that, the food was tasty and the staff was helpful, kind and understanding. I hope to visit Bernardus Lodge & Spa somewhere in the future and to experience the beautiful town Carmel once again. Hopefully without the embarrassing booking issue we had the fist night.

My husband and I recently had a baby and when we were offered an opportunity to get away for the weekend we took it. Bernardus Lodge happened to have vacancy that weekend so we booked a room and drove out to Carmel Valley. The hotel did not disappoint. Our room was beyond beautiful. It was quiet and peaceful. We spent a lot of time walking the grounds mesmerized by how picturesque every square inch of this place is. The amenities are also outstanding, from the Mercedes Test Drive to the complimentary food and drinks in the room. Everything has been thoughtfully considered. We will definitely be back!

The hotel grounds and rooms are beautiful and well maintained. Comparable to a Four Seasons or Ritz. We stayed in one of their Valley Villa Suites with our family of four. It felt like staying in a beautiful condo with room service and housekeeping. Huge rooms beautifully appointed with stylish furniture and original artwork. Unbelievable bathroom with dual showers and separate copper bathtub. Large balcony with outdoor fireplace and outdoor table with umbrella. The grounds were quite and peaceful. Large manicured bocce ball and croquet field, nice-sized pool, fire pit and outdoor area for drinks and dining. The restaurant was very good, but promised more than it delivered. In the several meals we had, it was a little inconsistent -- nothing was bad, some things were excellent, and some just so-so (particularly given the price). Dine there at least once, and then head into Carmel Valley for some excellent options. Two tips for your visit. First, if you like the contemporary art in the hotel, visit the Patricia Qualls gallery in Carmel Valley. She's the artist and can arrange for you to purchase the art in your room, or you can purchase similar pieces from her gallery. Second, the hotel's website was a bit misleading about the views. It says the Valley Villa Suites have "stunning Carmel Valley views." I would not call our view stunning, and it does not seem most of suites have much of a view. Unless you're in the "front row," your view is primarily of the building in front of you (I've posted a photo of our view). This is my only criticism of the hotel. If you don't want to look out at another building, get the following rooms/suites: 2 through 6 or 72 through 75. They look out on the vineyard or gardens.

We recently enjoyed a 4-night stay at Bernardus for our annual mother/daughter trip. Although our stay began with a bit of disappointment and irritation due to negative staff attitude and apathy, a mention of this to the general manager quickly rectified the situation. The grounds and gardens at Bernardus are spectacular, the décor is beautiful, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed several meals (breakfast and dinner) at Lucia and were extremely pleased – everything was delicious and farm-to-table fresh. Massages at the spa were excellent as well. We will definitely be back – our stay was almost perfect.
