$70 a night Resort Fee!!!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

It’s a lovely, peaceful place with helpful, friendly staff members. It has beautiful grounds and an attractive infinity pool. The refrigerator and room are well stocked with complimentary beverages and treats. It’s also quite close to Carmel by the Sea. Hover, once again we both found our dinner entree rather bland and flavorless. We ate dinner in Carmel our other two nights. The breakfast is good. Two things were rather shocking to me. I had paid $500 in advance for our trip but after I arrived I was notified by my credit card company that a $1000 hold was put on my card by Bernadus. Since this was my 4th trip here, I found this rather insulting, I got a large credit at the end and I have a large limit on my card but this has never happened in any other lodging. The other shock was that they had increased the resort fee to $70 a night! That is excessive. I had used their 3rd night free when staying two nights offer but even the “free” night had a $70 plus tax charge. This feels deceptive and hopefully new legislation will require lodging to just advertise the total cost per night rather than this deceptive practice.

Gorgeous but far from great

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Would have been perfect other than the obnoxious outdoor lighting at night and the lack of shades that block around the edges. As well as a bed that was so squishy it severely irritated my lower back issues and I haven’t been able to stand straight since.

Gas leak in room

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Staff was very friendly. The layout is really peaceful however. We checked into our room hung out turned the fireplace on the cover fell off and after a few minutes noticed a strong smell of gas in the room as it got unbearable we called the front desk and left the room and waited maintenance confirmed there was a gas leak so we had to repack and move rooms. Given the health and safety issue, or if we put it on at night and didn’t notice. It could have not been good. We were moved to a room of equal value and not charged the resort fee. Given the circumstances and safety concerns I would have done more to compensate as the resort. We will not be going back.

Relaxing weekend

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Just had a super relaxing weekend here at the Bernardus - spa was great and Lucia Restaurant is delicious. The rooms are very spacious and classy with a fireplace. We did day trips for hiking in the area. And enjoying walking around ocean street. The adult pool and the hotel pool are very nice but we didn’t swim. We’re definitely coming back.

"The Bernardus Lodge was wonderful. My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend at the lodge and found it very relaxing, romantic and the service was beyond exceptional. They were attentive to every need and always made us feel like their top priority. We also visited the spa and had a wonderful experience. We will definitely go back!"
