Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino, California

Off California’s Hwy 1 is Brewery Gulch Inn, a retreat nestled between redwood forests, dramatic Pacific cliffs and a verdant mosaic of vineyards. Proprietors Guy and Sarah Pacurar have forged an idyllic respite made of timber reclaimed from the Big River and populated with Arts and Crafts furniture, in an ecosystem they actually strive to improve by regenerating the land and encouraging bio-diversity. Otters and harbor seals frolic in the waters below as deer dash through the forests. To watch the sun set over this coastline is something extraordinary.

Wake up to the hotel’s special eggs benedict on homemade English muffins and custom-roasted Black Oak blend coffee. Trace Highway 1 to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where a fern canyon, rhododendrons, roses, deer and osprey populate the wild coastal bluffs. Continue up the road to Noyo Harbor, lunch at Herons by the Sea in sight of the fishing and Coast Guard vessels passing by the village. Enjoy a horseback ride on the beach at the Ricochet Ridge Ranch: one of Outside magazine’s top 25 trips of a lifetime. Upon your return to the hotel, enjoy wine hour by the monumental four-sided glass and metal fireplace. Finish your day at the Headlands Coffee House with the local kids, artists, and couples, then wind down by your in-room gas-burning fireplace.

We have been coming here with our friends for over five years. I can’t say enough about the warmth of the owner and staff, the beautiful location and the inn which has everything you want when you come to this area. The inn is immaculate, beautifully designed with a lobby with massive windows on all sides overlooking the wide spacious deck, gardens and water below. Outside fireplaces and adirondack chairs, flowers, garden paths. Perfect. The other reasons to stay here is the food. Both breakfast and light dinner are included in your stay and have only gotten more delicious as the years have gone by. The meals are served in the lobby. Dinner is informal and couples and families eat dinner and play games or watch movies afterward in their rooms. Guy, the owner, is also a hospitable and caring owner and mingles with guests most mornings. Do not hesitate to book here but do so well in advance as it is on the Condé Nast list as one of best places to stay.

We stayed in the Smuggler's Cove room and had a perfect stay. We had made a mistake in our reservation: no problem -- fixed in an instant! Lovely to have option to either have full breakfast OR breakfast pastry and coffee in our room! We did the latter. Beautiful dinner served each evening. Gorgeous views from veranda. Friendly and helpful staff. We will definitely plan to come back. We didn't make the reservation for the sake of VALUE but it was a terrific DEAL.

The owner and staff at Brewery Gulch Inn truly exceed all expectations and when they state that they welcome you home, they truly mean it. Guests are treated like VIP’s in every sense of the word. The dinners were outstanding and the breakfasts were delicious and presented beautifully. The views are magnificent, whether the ocean or meadow side. Even though the drive can be difficult, the peace-filled days were well worth the effort. This was our 4th visit and we plan to return yearly.

As Always we had the perfect stay at BGI! The entire staff is just so accommodating to our every request and they are so sweet.. always smiling and most often remembering our faces every year . We have been coming down for several years and each time have added an extra day from our previous trips. I just wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else. How many INNs provide a 5star experience with a down home cozy environment ?! Honestly .. it’s hard to get out of our lounging clothes and leave the INN once we settle in. From the wine pairing at dinner to the glorious breakfasts and the huge fireplace for reading a book or playing a board game ... it’s just pure Relaxation. Now don’t get me wrong... we do pry ourselves out of our seats and venture out because GUY the owner, has a spectacular list of amazing things to do and see... from wine tasting , to spectacular cliffs to watch whales , to picnic lunches prepared by Their in-house Chef, to meandering thru the town sampling the jams, the bloody Mary’s, and the chocolates. All in all.. expect to just relax and take it all in!

This is a great find. Just a few minutes out of town, this inn feels like a home. The beds were comfortable and delicious (they leave a bag of artisan caramels on them). The view from our room was of a scenic cove. The bathtub was huge, big enough for two comfortably. They've got a huge DVD library and DVD players in the TVs. But the best part of this experience is that it includes dinner. Served a tad early but totally filling and means you have one less dinner to pay for. We stayed on New Year's Eve and they went all out with a seafood raw bar, cake, masks, beer and wine, and so much more. No elevator but some rooms are on the ground floor.
