Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino, California

Off California’s Hwy 1 is Brewery Gulch Inn, a retreat nestled between redwood forests, dramatic Pacific cliffs and a verdant mosaic of vineyards. Proprietors Guy and Sarah Pacurar have forged an idyllic respite made of timber reclaimed from the Big River and populated with Arts and Crafts furniture, in an ecosystem they actually strive to improve by regenerating the land and encouraging bio-diversity. Otters and harbor seals frolic in the waters below as deer dash through the forests. To watch the sun set over this coastline is something extraordinary.

Wake up to the hotel’s special eggs benedict on homemade English muffins and custom-roasted Black Oak blend coffee. Trace Highway 1 to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where a fern canyon, rhododendrons, roses, deer and osprey populate the wild coastal bluffs. Continue up the road to Noyo Harbor, lunch at Herons by the Sea in sight of the fishing and Coast Guard vessels passing by the village. Enjoy a horseback ride on the beach at the Ricochet Ridge Ranch: one of Outside magazine’s top 25 trips of a lifetime. Upon your return to the hotel, enjoy wine hour by the monumental four-sided glass and metal fireplace. Finish your day at the Headlands Coffee House with the local kids, artists, and couples, then wind down by your in-room gas-burning fireplace.

Loved our evening at your inn. Our son and granddaughter joined us. The evening food and wine were marvellous and plentiful. The adjoining rooms were well appointed and convenient for our need to watch our baby and yet have some adult time. Breakfast was just what we needed before setting out on our explorations of the area. Thank you to all for a perfect respite.

We were fortunate enough to spend two nights at this unique, upscale, ocean-front destination while celebrating our anniversary. It is the perfect place for peace and relaxation while surrounded by nature (you can hear the ocean waves from your room). Meals were delicious, the staff was very attentive and knowledgable, and the ambience is spot on for a craftsman style retreat overlooking the ocean. We enjoyed sharing conversation and drinks with other guests in the comfortable common area, were able to watch wildlife in the knoll from the fire pit, and couldn't have asked for more from our room accomodations. BGI made everything easy, welcoming and enjoyable. We will definitely be back!

We stayed at BGI three years ago. We had a splendid experience then and it was even better this time. The meals are extraordinary. Breakfast can range from a yogurt/fresh berries/granola parfait to a lumberjack plate to thin, crispy pancakes, and everything in between. Fresh coffee is available in carafes and Keurig cups, and there's hot water for tea. I was relieved to see that the coffee is available around 7:15 a.m. (Breakfast is served 8-10.) That enabled me to go down to the great room, grab a cup, and stare at the wall, read, or take in the view of the fog, the ocean, and the trees. Breakfast and a buffet dinner (with wine) are included in the price of the room. Three years ago, the dinner was billed as "light." This year, it is anything but. Hearty portions of fresh, creative dishes, warm bread, and great desserts provide a more than satisfying evening meal. Comparable meals and wine elsewhere would easily run $100+/day for a couple so remember that when you consider the price of your room. As we did three years ago, we stayed in the second-floor Heron Room. It offers more than enough space for two people, a balcony, a fine view of the cove below and, on a clear day, the sea beyond. To be honest, I don't mind the fog at all. It creates a soft, pensive mood for the day. Staff is friendly and solicitous to a fault. If Anna is your server for breakfast, you'll be very pleased. She is sweet and efficient. Guy is a great resource for all kinds of information about the area. It was a very enjoyable experience. We hope to return in two years to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

At the Brewery Gulch Inn everything is done so you feel relax and everything is made simple and all included. Except the remote controls on the TV which needs a PhD... but it is not BGO's fault... it is ours since we are not used to US TV. The food is great, the rooms are great, the service is nice, what do you want to ask more?

We unfortunately only spent one night at this resort. It is in an out of the way spot perfect for just getting away. The attention to detail is wonderful. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we walked in the door. The room we stayed in (The Smuggler) was small but very clean and the bed comfortable. They have nice soft towels and a heated floor in the bathroom. Dinner and breakfast were included in the cost. We missed breakfast because we left early but the dinner was very good. Good place to just relax for a couple of days.
