Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino, California

Off California’s Hwy 1 is Brewery Gulch Inn, a retreat nestled between redwood forests, dramatic Pacific cliffs and a verdant mosaic of vineyards. Proprietors Guy and Sarah Pacurar have forged an idyllic respite made of timber reclaimed from the Big River and populated with Arts and Crafts furniture, in an ecosystem they actually strive to improve by regenerating the land and encouraging bio-diversity. Otters and harbor seals frolic in the waters below as deer dash through the forests. To watch the sun set over this coastline is something extraordinary.

Wake up to the hotel’s special eggs benedict on homemade English muffins and custom-roasted Black Oak blend coffee. Trace Highway 1 to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where a fern canyon, rhododendrons, roses, deer and osprey populate the wild coastal bluffs. Continue up the road to Noyo Harbor, lunch at Herons by the Sea in sight of the fishing and Coast Guard vessels passing by the village. Enjoy a horseback ride on the beach at the Ricochet Ridge Ranch: one of Outside magazine’s top 25 trips of a lifetime. Upon your return to the hotel, enjoy wine hour by the monumental four-sided glass and metal fireplace. Finish your day at the Headlands Coffee House with the local kids, artists, and couples, then wind down by your in-room gas-burning fireplace.

My daughter and I stayed here 2 nights for a "girls weekend." We absolutely loved this property! The food, staff, and rooms are warm and welcoming. To quote my daughter, "This place is fancy and comfortable at the same time." Breakfast - included with the room price - offers some really delicious dishes. And evening wine hour included enough food for us for dinner.

Best trip I've ever had to a B&B. Concierge service was extremely helpful, gave us great ideas & directions. Innkeepers were great hosts, poured local wine in the evening followed by a fabulous buffet for dinner. A full breakfast was served in dining area or as room service was absolutely delicious!

We have stayed two separate times at BGI and can't recommend it enough. Every small detail is attended to - the bedrooms are impecably clean and beautifully appointed with lovely touches like original art, fabulous Asprey toiletries from England and even a grown-up coloring book and pencil set to pick up and enjoy. We lead busy lives and went looking for a place to switch off - we picked the right hotel. The whole experience seems to be geared towards tranquility: the feel of the hotel is so calm, I loved the spacious great-room with it's crackling wood fireplace, comfy craftsman furniture and big French doors looking onto the deck and the bay beyond. We spent time there simply relaxing and flicking through magazines and reading, as did other guests - there are a few different seating areas so you can hang out but still have your space from other guests. Prior to check-in we walked on the close-by headlands in Mendocino which was beautiful - and spotted whales. It was a good way to leave cares behind before check-in! We watched the sun set from our balcony and took in the sea air and view while enjoying some local sparkling wine. Our room also had an ocean view from the shower / twin tub and the bed was so comfortable! What the BGI calls 'food and wine hour' is quite an understatement because it includes both main course and desert - delicious. After dinner we opted to make the most of the hotel by choosing a DVD (huge selection) to watch in our room, again next to a fireplace. The breakfasts were my favorite part - nice creative twists to the food that make it extra special. The hotel owner introduced me to their house hot chocolate - so rich! - which I enjoyed on the main deck while my husband and I watched the birds that feed there. Keep your eyes peeled for Ospreys flying overhead carrying a catch in from the ocean. Many hotels, no matter how much you pay for the room are simply just a room. In my opinion, this place is different - it's got a 'feel' to it - it reminds me of walking into a spa, like a safe-haven from the busy pace of life and like you're really treating yourself. We were there for Valentines day and it is great for couples but I'd also happily go there solo or with a girlfriend.

My wife and I and five other couples stayed here for my 50th birthday. The hotel is very nice. The view is fantastic, and the common areas are great gathering places inside and out to enjoy an evening cocktail and the great views. The breakfast menu has lots of neat options and takes on the classics. It's made to order. Everyone loved the breakfast. I highly recommend their version of BLT. Only slight suggestion for improvement -- the grits. (And who expects good grits in N Cal?!!). But what truly made the stay remarkable was the owner, Guy. He was more than our host. He worked with my wife to plan an awesome weekend -- made the reservations for the limo, wine tours, catered lunch at a winery, very nice dinner, etc. We had such a fun weekend, and his planning and assistance was invaluable. And everywhere we went people knew him. "We'll be back" as Arnold would say. Charles and Kristen

We stayed at this Inn for 3 nights and had a great experience. The setting is simple but lovely with ocean views and many comforts. The breakfasts were outstanding and unforgettable. A small but adequate supper is served each evening. The location in Mendocino made it easy for us to hike in state parks and the redwood forests. I would highly recommend it to couples looking for a quiet, quaint location to experience the area.
