Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino, California

Off California’s Hwy 1 is Brewery Gulch Inn, a retreat nestled between redwood forests, dramatic Pacific cliffs and a verdant mosaic of vineyards. Proprietors Guy and Sarah Pacurar have forged an idyllic respite made of timber reclaimed from the Big River and populated with Arts and Crafts furniture, in an ecosystem they actually strive to improve by regenerating the land and encouraging bio-diversity. Otters and harbor seals frolic in the waters below as deer dash through the forests. To watch the sun set over this coastline is something extraordinary.

Wake up to the hotel’s special eggs benedict on homemade English muffins and custom-roasted Black Oak blend coffee. Trace Highway 1 to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where a fern canyon, rhododendrons, roses, deer and osprey populate the wild coastal bluffs. Continue up the road to Noyo Harbor, lunch at Herons by the Sea in sight of the fishing and Coast Guard vessels passing by the village. Enjoy a horseback ride on the beach at the Ricochet Ridge Ranch: one of Outside magazine’s top 25 trips of a lifetime. Upon your return to the hotel, enjoy wine hour by the monumental four-sided glass and metal fireplace. Finish your day at the Headlands Coffee House with the local kids, artists, and couples, then wind down by your in-room gas-burning fireplace.

We didn't realize it when we booked, but the Inn had changed ownership since last we visited as a young couple ten years ago. We returned as a young family, and it was the same as it ever was, which is to the new owner's credit because he could have so easily messed up the formula trying to fuss with it. No detail is ever missed, and the staff is absolutely fabulous. It is truly one of the most remarkable spaces in one of the most remarkable places you will ever find.

We stayed here for 5 nights. One of the best rooms is Raven. View of bay and ocean even from two large windows in the shower. Breakfast and dinner included in price if the room. We are vegan and they prepared good meals especially for us. Best part is that room service is free. Even the tip is built-in to cost of the room. Bottomless coffee all day long.

This beautiful Inn has a relaxing ambiance. It is set in a gorgeous natural environment with interesting birds and flowers as well as spectacular ocean views complete with dramatic sunsets. Our Osprey room was spacious and comfy with great views off the balcony. Welcoming wine and luscious caramels made us feel right at home. Bed was huge and linens were lush. Great room is very beautiful with floor to ceiling windows for ultimate nature views. Lots of DVDs, games, etc and comfy places to sit and enjoy the fire. Made to order breakfast and nightly suppers were delicious and plentiful featuring wine/ from the north coast. Just a quick mile from Mendocino made it easy to enjoy the area. Bottom line - we would return in a heartbeat and highly recommend Brewery Gulch to anyone who wants the ultimate North Coast experience.

We stated at BGI for one night with two other couples. The staff was welcoming, our room was well-appointed and comfortable and the property beautiful. We loved meeting the owner, Guy, and receiving his input on wineries to visit. Plus our stay at BGI gave us several free wine tastings in the valley. After our stay we headed to wine taste in Anderson Valley and whenever we mentioned Guy people lit up and raved about his property. Thanks for a great stay!

This is a lovely, small but sophisticated inn with view of coves and inlets. Marvelous made to order breakfasts and a great (but limited choice) dinner buffet very satisfying. Staff very friendly and accommodating without being intrusive. The in really won my heart when it upgraded me to an accessible first floor room after an airport fall which left me in pain and with limited mobility. Third floor room we booked would have involved 2 flights of stairs.
