I recently stayed here for a week while the wife was having surgery around the corner (couldn't stay with her). I chose this hotel based on two factors. Walking distance to the hospital, and old world charm. There are several modern hotels in the area, but I prefer the former. The Inn is situated in two brownstones. When you walk in, you are transformed back to early 20th century NYC. The parlor with fireplace aglow, and a quaint, beautifully appointed tea room. There is no elevator, and two series of steps to get to the top floor, about a dozen each. Wasn't an issue for me, but I could see it being difficult for elderly/disabled. The room was fantastic! While walking into the room, swing music was playing on the flat screen TV......nice touch! Approximately 250-300 square feet of room, and a nice, clean bathroom with shower. The room was decorated in Victorian furnishings, which were beautiful. There are a few dings and scrapes here and there, but that just added to the charm. All of the staff were friendly and aimed to please. There is a hip club downstairs, and the bartender know how to mix some awesome cocktails. I think I had "City Courage", which was delicious! There are a lot of great restaurants nearby, as well as great nightspots.... the Village is close. My only complaint is that the bed was too firm. I definitely will be back when the wife is better, this time for a pleasure visit. Thanks to the staff for making a bad situation tolerable!

We stayed here several years and decided to come back because it was so charming and also close to were my husband was having surgery. Joshua greeted us and was so warm and congenial. He remembered the surgery and gave us room on the first floor...actually a big suite, which was delightfully charming and quaint. He brought a heavy breakfast for my husband, very early the next morning, because he had to eat before 6;30 am. Alphonso was on the next two days and could not have been nicer. He was a wealth of information and ready to help us at a moments notice. The Inn has such charm and the tea room next door, even more so! Go for high tea if you can! We discovered the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace home nearby. Managed by the National Park service and free, it is worth a trip. There are some lovely restaurants nearby and you can order wine, through the Inn, from the bar downstairs. A perfect stay. We will return.

I picked the Inn primarily for its location but the photos in the website suggested that it was also an attractive, comfortable vintage residence. If one overlooked the dusty moldings and louvered blinds or the shabby furniture, one could approximate the charm and elegance of the Inn in days gone by. There are a few conveniently located hotels in the area that are cleaner and cheaper. Its hard to rationalize the per diem cost of a stay but the Inn must be a bit of money pit to heat and to maintain the physical structure. Time will tell if we give it another chance in future visits to NYC.

As others have commented, if you want the charm of a quaint, old fashion inn then this is your place. My son and I stayed in the suite with the king bed for one night. Plenty of room and quiet. While we had no problem going up the stairs to the second floor, others with mobility challenges might find it difficult and there's no elevator. The customer service was excellent and friendly from the beginning. The room was functional but had some quirky things like a very unbalanced dresser and chirping toilet. No major issues. Things looked and felt clean but the light level was a little low so I couldn't quite tell. Breakfast was OK if you're in a hurry (it's included in the price) but I would go elsewhere otherwise. Overall, price was reasonable and I would stay there again.

I loved the inn at irving which was our chosen location for my husbands 40th birthday. It was a charming mix of quaintly decorated rooms (we stayed in Edith Wharton room) with an abundance of space and a lovely big bed , living space and with everything you need for an enjoyable stay! I knew I had chosen well when my husband and I walked through the door and Alberto offered us prosecco and helped us with our cases. He was charming and helpful and continued this level of service throughout our stay! Alfonso was also extremely helpful and provided us with maps and umbrellas when required :-). The breakfast was not over facing and continental and was taken in the lovely tea rooms all decorated with fine china and an eclectic mix of decor, if you like a big cooked breakfast there are many bars and restaurants around but this was enough for us. The gramercy area was my favourite part of New York and had lovely restaurants all around my favourite being florian which had meatballs to die for! The hotel is only 5 mins from union square metro station and you can get around everywhere in the city from here. I did go to Atlantic city then back to New York and stayed in a 5 star hotel near fifth avenue twice the price but I had been spoiled by the inn at irving and wish we had booked our final day there and this will be my go to hotel on my return to New York! Beautiful rooms, fantastic staff and great location , thank you inn at irving for a wonderful stay!
