The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island

When it opened in 1873, The Chanler at Cliff Walk was a mecca in Newport, Rhode Island for financiers, industrialists and tycoons. Following a multi-million dollar restoration, it today epitomizes the glories of yesteryear with lavishly adorned mansion accommodations, and garden and ocean villas that boast private gated courtyards. The name of each room reflects its décor, from the romantic English Trellis Room to the Renaissance Junior Suite evocative of Versailles.

The hotel resides on a sprawling estate on Cliff Walk, an oceanfront path that allows guests to savor the essence of a bygone era as they stroll past landmarks such as the former retreat of heiress Doris Duke. While Newport is known for its historic architecture, it is also acclaimed for its seafood. Enjoy elegant dining at The Chanler at Cliff Walk in a superb oceanfront setting at the Spiced Pear Restuarant. Talented chefs create delectable and innovative menus of regional international cuisine, highlighted with the freshest of New England seafood.

After walking the Cliff Walk, we decided to have lunch on the veranda. While waiting for a table we relaxed in the Adirondack chairs with some wine with a great view of Easton Beach. Lunch was great I had Alaskan king crab for an app and the Chanler burger, both were fantastic. The dress was very casual but the prices were for maybe a special occasion.

We recently celebrated a 21st birthday in style on the back lawn at the Chanler. The view of the ocean and sound of the waves, surrounded by lush gardens beside the fire pit was an amazing backdrop for a magical event. The bartender set us up with a chilled bottle of bubbly on ice with freshly cleaned & polished glasses for all in our party. Their service and the setting were equally outstanding. We also really enjoy dining there and their Spiced Pear martinis (also the restaurant name) are amazing. We will often return. For tourists and locals alike, the Chanler makes you feel like royalty while feeling at home. The bathrooms are also just stunning - must see!

We stopped by The Chanler later in the afternoon primarily for a martini but ended up having a couple of appetizers on the Cliff Walk Terrace. The French martinis were fabulous, but the appetizers left us a little disappointed. We shared the "pizza' and the octopus. I would not have either again. We did not have any other food so I cannot opine further. The view was wonderful and as I said, the martinis

I do not tend to leave reviews, although I shamelessly rely on other ones here at TA! I believe the only other review I have posted is for The Merrion in Dublin. My wife and I have stayed at a multitude of fine and not so fine hotels and are not terribly fussy people and consequently are never too disappointed nor too overwhelmed. However, that being said, we have developed a keen eye for what service and hospitality should be at some of these so called 5 star's and what it actually ends up being. The Chanler at Cliff Walk is everything it SHOULD be. From our lovely front desk host, Demetrius, who never failed to greet us formally by name and enquire about our stay to the warm and welcoming hand written notes from various staff members to every single one of the charming valets, you were all simply the epitome of graciousness. Of course no stay is perfection in every way, that is not possible, but the imperfections were so minor it would be a disservice to mention them. DO have dinner at the hotels restaurant, The Spiced Pear and skip the highly touted French restaurant in town if your looking to have a special and memorable meal. I have reviewed it separately on OpenTable under the title of, "Elegance and Excellence. Many thanks to all those at The Chanler who succeed where others only strive at making this one of the best hotels we have stayed at anywhere in the world. We hope to see you again soon.
