Insider Tips From The Editors Of

travel + leisure

Getting to Jamaica by air - Jamaica is served by two international airports. Norman Manley International serves Kingston, and Sangster International is on the outskirts of Montego Bay. Air Jamaica and several U.S. carriers offer direct flights from major American cities (including New York, Washington/Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles). Most hotels and resorts arrange incoming and outgoing airport ground transfers, which can range from about $5 to about $50, depending on how far you’re going. If you need to arrange your own airport transport, an official licensed taxi (with a red “PPV” license plate) is your best bet, available from the taxi offices at both airports. Rates are normally fixed according to your destination, so be sure to agree on a price before departing.,

When to go to Jamaica - The island’s dry season (which runs from December to May) has the best weather, with sun and average daily temperatures hovering around 79 degrees on the coast (it’s colder in the mountains). Of course, the high tourist season coincides, so if you want quiet and lower prices, it’s better to come in the mid- to late fall (when one of the island’s biggest annual events, the Port Antonio International Blue Marlin Tournament, takes place); or in the rainier summer months (when the Montego Bay Sumfest reggae festival happens; www.reggaesumfest.com).
