Pico Bonito was a little slice of paradise, immersing us into the rainforest while giving us all of the benefits of a top-class luxury resort. The staff were all helpful and friendly, from when we made initial reservations to our departure. The restaurant staff were especially good, making us feel very welcome. The grounds were immaculate, embedding us in the raw beauty of the jungle tempered by wonderful landscaping. Our bungalow was spacious and clean, with a comfortable bed and good shower. It was a short walk to the main lodge and restaurant and bar. We spent many happy hours at the restaurant watching the hordes of hummingbirds using the feeders. This place was much more than just a luxury resort, however. The lodge served as a conduit to learning about the rainforest. We went on several excursions, focused mainly on our love of birding. Our guide Santos showed us so many birds, mammals, and plants while we went on the boat trip and visited several other birding sites. It was truly remarkable. There were no down sides to our trip, and we hope to visit again and see all of the birds we missed the first time!

After a long journey from the cold north, we were glad to return to the Lodge at Pico Bonito to unwind and bring in the New Year. The staff could not have been more welcoming, our cabin was everything one would want for a private, romantic and comfortable stay and the food was excellent. This is truly a wonderful place even if you are not a "birder". You will be wonderfully pampered and treated like royalty. Thank you, The Lodge at Pico Bonito.

Don't get me wrong this place is very nice and the rooms are very beautiful. also the food is good and the surrounding is amazing. But if one pays more than 300$ per night you can expect some standard of service which they don't really provide... some minor issues: - the evening front desk doesn't make you feel welcome - the evening waiter brought us several times the wrong drinks and meals... (remember 300$ a night...) - the internet is only working in the restaurant and the lobby.... not in the cabins - the tour guides are more interested in taking pictures of birds than to indicate them to the guests - the serpentarium is more of a "zoo in bad shape" than anything else.. (also they must have never heard of correct animal husbandry... it's very sad!)

This is one of the small luxury hotels of the world and while I’m not sure I would call it ‘luxury’, it certainly is a really nicely done, beautifully set, thoroughly charming place to spend a few days, taking in the area’s abundant wildlife and birdlife. I’m not going to spend too long on the place itself but suffice to say, the grounds are gorgeous, the rooms very nice and spacious, albeit still reasonably simple, and the main buildings and restaurant area sensitively designed and incorporated into the surrounding forest. I thought the food was great and well priced and the staff unfailingly friendly and charming (though the restaurant was barely lit at night - perhaps to deter insects/moths etc?). I’m not normally one for a gift shop as they’re normally full of tat, but this one has some fantastic Lenca pottery that felt authentic and looked good. So to the wildlife, because that is, I assume, why you’re even thinking of going here? I did a range of the excursions available and all were good. The standout is undoubtedly the trip to Cuero y Salado national park. A short drive, then a very leisurely open-sided train/trolley car ride through beautiful scenery before arriving at the visitor center where you board your little motorboat (bring hat and sunscreen and umbrella - there is no shade on the boat). We saw a tonne of great birds, the backside of a Red Howler Monkey, crocs, an endangered tortoise, a Green Iguana, long-nosed bats sleeping on trees and more. We were unlucky not to see Spider Monkeys and Capuchins which are reasonably common sightings apparently. What we didn’t see is any Manatees which are as rare as hen’s teeth (why hotels the world over keep advertising the possibility of seeing things which even the guides have seen only once in 10 years remains a frustration). All under the stewardship and amazing, knowledgeable eye of one of the hotel’s guides. The guided walk around the grounds itself (which can be done at 6am or 3pm) is brilliant in its own right as you will see a tonne of great birds, incl two types of toucan, great potoos and lots more besides (the hummingbird feeders attract about five different varieties). You will also definitely see Agoutis as several just basically hang out on the grounds all day feeding). The walk will also take you to one of the lookouts from where the famed Lovely Cotinga might be seen. I was just as happy to come across a baby Barred Forest Racer snake to be honest. I did do a walk to one of the waterfall/river areas which was nice enough but suspect weather deterred from doing the xxxxx falls walk which takes you properly into Pico Bonito park itself - a shame as there’s different kinds of life to be seen as you climb up into the forest, including the three monkey species there (Howler, Spider and Capuchin). I also got taken down to the serpent house which is good fun, esp if you like getting close to some very dangerous snakes (in glass cases, don’t worry). Each guide I had was very friendly, enthusiastic, endlessly patient with my questions and photographing and supremely knowledgeable. Only slight down notes were weak/non-existent wifi in the rooms (I know, I know - should be ignoring that when you’re somewhere so beautiful), the likelihood of getting heavily bitten (cover up at all times and lay on the repellent), a yoga area that looked like it probably doesn’t get used (the clientele were almost exclusively birders in their 60s) If you are really into birding, you will love this place and you might probably want to stay at least 4-5 nights. And if like me, you just generally like seeing wildlife, enjoy the comforts of a lodge that is very professionally run and love being surrounded by terrific, untouched nature, then this will be paradise.

Upon our arrival at Pico Bonito we were treated with execellent care. Actually this wonderful experience started with our hotel pick up at San Pedro Sula Airport and followed through to our departure. Everyone at the resort made us feel so welcomed, safe and pampered. The private villas were well appointed and very comfortable and clean. The restaurant was great. Our Spa experience rivaled the best we've had at home and on our travels. The abundance of bird watching there on the hotel grounds as well as in the National Forest were amazing. This place is a must for Birders, couples and families who enjoy the outdoors!
