Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, New York

Considered by many one of the best hotels of its kind in the country, Whiteface Lodge is nestled in Adirondack Park. This six-million-acre recreation area in upstate New York has drawn nature lovers for decades.

In the heart of the park on Lake Placid, the lodge evokes the region's 19th-century heyday with a wood-beamed exterior, cozy carpet-strewn sitting rooms and cast-iron fireplaces. Amenities and services are decidedly 21st-century, as is the focus on family travel and mountain escapes. The resort offers every imaginable activity for families and adult travelers.

Made a reservation on the website as previously and arrived to find that the lodge had been closed for maintenance during the past two weeks. A sandwich board out front stated that doors would be opened at 2PM for guests and a worker confirmed that arrangement plus free drinks because of the inconvenience. Returned at 2PM to be told at the front desk that check-in was at 4PM! After some 'discussions' we got our room but were told that the lounge was not open - under construction. Not to worry, they would have a temp bar in the restaurant. Settled into our room but the fireplace wasn't working. According to the repairman, some one had cleaned it and left the gas valve in the wrong position. After that was fixed we went up to the restaurant for a drink - only to be told that the bar would not be opened until 5PM!! I asked for the GM and relayed all of our issues and my annoyance with the entire mess. Told him that there were other hotels in the town but the lodge was a special choice to celebrate my wife's birthday. This dude was obviously uninterested in our issues and proceeded to explain that maintenance is necessary each year (although clients are not told that or what to expect) and that check in is always at 4PM (in spite of the board out front and the confirmation of staff). He then offered to get us a free drink(!) and to pay for my wife's dinner (apparently only one of us mattered). We went back to our room and noticed the putrid smell of gas. I wanted to leave the hotel but my wife was upset and tired and disappointed so we stayed. Within an hour she was sick and in bed. Her evening meal was toast and tea and mine was a cold burger. However, the guy who brought the tray told me that the manager would look after the cost.. So, no notice of construction or maintenance issues to guests at reservation, three different stories about check in times from three different employees, amenities not working, gas leaking into the suite and a manager who clearly doesn't believe that a guest should bother him with their complaints. Whiteface used to be a unique place in the area, a special lodge where we could relax and enjoy the scenery and a respite with solid service and exceptional ambiance. That was last year and probably with a different manager. And at $400 a night, the management used to believe in delivering value for money. Next birthday we'll be spending that money at another resort.

The facility is most accommadating and luxurious. We always enjoy our visits no matter the time of year! The pool and hot tubs in the winter are heavenly. The bar area is very relaxing and entertaining. Lake Placid is a charming village with excellent restaurants and things to do. We love Whiteface Lodge!

I took my two kids (ages 8 &5) and had an incredible time. They loved the kids game room, ice skating and the pool. Breakfast buffet was included which is always a plus for my kids. The service and staff were polite and helpful. We skied one day at Whiteface mountain which was a quick 15 minute drive and had a great experience there as well.

My boyfriend took my for my birthday. It was sensational. The whiteface lodge is almost a yearly visit for us. The winter time in lake placid is magical. From the minute you open your eyes in the morning, the Lodge is breath-taking. In the winter time, there are outside hot tubs that are tremendously fun. This lodge is fantastic for couples and for families. Thereā€™s so much to do right on the property. Thereā€™s hockey rink, swimming, snowshoeing....etc. inside thereā€™s a movie theatre, game room, including bowling alley. Also, the spa is top notch. Go! Enjoy yourself! Perfect vacation for romance or families.

Our one bedroom suite perfectly accommodated our family of five. We never lacked for activities between the pool, game room, skating rink and movie theater. The in-room kitchen facilities allowed us to make dinner "at home" when we didn't feel like venturing out. All-in-all a wonderful family vacation.
