Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, New York

Considered by many one of the best hotels of its kind in the country, Whiteface Lodge is nestled in Adirondack Park. This six-million-acre recreation area in upstate New York has drawn nature lovers for decades.

In the heart of the park on Lake Placid, the lodge evokes the region's 19th-century heyday with a wood-beamed exterior, cozy carpet-strewn sitting rooms and cast-iron fireplaces. Amenities and services are decidedly 21st-century, as is the focus on family travel and mountain escapes. The resort offers every imaginable activity for families and adult travelers.

Our once favorite family hotel of all time has lost its luster this year. Sadly this is the first time in our 8 visits to the property that we noticed some wear and tear and attention to detail that no longer exists. Simple things such as peeling ceiling paint in the shower, or stains on the carpets should be attended to in a property such as this. If I was a “fractional owner” I would be extremely upset that my exorbitant maintenance fees were not being put to use for cosmetic details such as these that are inexpensive to repair and go a long way to the guest. The underground hall leading to the pool had a very noticeable water stain and peeling paint/wallpaper that should have been repaired prior to a holiday weekend with so many guests in and out of the hotel. Popcorn on the carpets should have been promptly vacuumed up, fingerprints wiped from windows, the menu in front of Kanu was filthy this morning prior to us checking out. These are just small examples of the few things we noticed that were not found in the past. Our suite upon checking in had fingerprints left on the door leading to the outdoor deck so disgusting I had to ask the housekeeping staff for windex. Instead of offering to do it for me, they handed me a sprayer of windex and a washcloth and left me to clean away. At thousands of dollars spent for 3 nights I would expect someone to come in and at least wipe things down for us. Those sample fingerprints were on the washer and dryer and light switches. I ended up cleaning half the 3 bedroom suite for fear our family would end up sick with some germ not properly cleaned from the previous guest. I hope things turn around, as it is a shame to see such a once beautiful property begin to deteriorate.

It's one of the best places I've ever been! Came here with my husband on weekdays, and it wasn't crowded. So cozy, atmospheric, lovely! Detailed rustic design is fantastic! Our room was the last on the floor, but we have a mountain and ice rink view. Friendly staff. Good food. Excellent service. A lot of activities offers: movie theatre, gym, playroom, spa, yoga, aerobic, waterpool, ice rink. As i noticed at the breakfast, there were a lot of families with children different ages. So, I'm sure, we will be back there with our children. P.S. I liked a marshmallows with chocolate near the fireplace, that is so pleasured trifle.

To visit Lake Placid and not stay at this resort would be a mistake. We stayed at the Lodge for three nights with our two young kids and there was such a variety of activities offered that everyone was kept happy. Our first night was picturesque as there was a figure skating show on the ice rink while snow was falling. A bunch of people were gathered in the lean to's and near the fire pit to keep warm. We went snowshoeing each morning on the trails behind the Lodge using the complimentary snowshoes. Our kids skated on the rink (hockey and figure skates also complimentary) each day. The indoor/outdoor pool was also a big hit with our family. It's not very often that you can you swim in a heated pool outside in below freezing weather. The Lodge also has a bowling alley that can be reserved for an hour at no charge, a movie theater where they show newly released movies at 3 separate times during the day, and a game room. The fitness room was very large and had plenty of equipment (treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and free weights). We also took advantage of the complimentary breakfast buffet each morning and coffee throughout the day. The chocolate chip cookies provided each night are delicious. The suite was plenty big for our family. It was nice to have a full kitchen, washer/dryer and fireplace. The heated floors in the bathrooms were also a nice touch. We will look back on this long weekend getaway as an amazing experience. We will most definitely return in the future.

Such a beautiful resort and lodge. The staff is wonderful and the hotel is gorgeous. The suites are spacious and luxurious, and we love the fresh baked cookies that come with the turn-down service each night! The breakfast is also fantastic, in spite of what some other reviewers have said. The location could not be better and we love how many things there are to do on the property and just down the road. This was our second visit to The Whiteface Lodge, and it most certainly will not be our last!

Whiteface Lodge exceeded our expectations. This place in incredible. It's almost surreal. We went as a family of 4 for my 40th birthday and did not want to leave! There was just enough to keep the kids busy (ages 7 and 10) without it being a kid-themed place. If you want to relax and unwind, this is the place. We live 4 hours away, so we made it a three-night stay. If you are that far away, I wouldn't do less. I have no complaints. Everything was amazing, and we were constantly "wowed" by how much there is to offer. We will be returning again and again!
