Morgan's Rock in Playa Ocotal, Nicaragua

A suspension bridge cuts 150 feet through thick rainforest vegetation filled with howler monkeys and three-toed sloths to connect Morgan's Rock to the outside world. Built on cliffs overlooking a private cove, bungalows in this nature-centric conclave are spacious and rustically sumptuous. Managua-based Simplemente Madera constructed certified-sustainable furniture from local hardwood, and native artist Augusto Silva honors Tunu culture in his colorful paintings. Relish an early morning yoga session at a beachfront pavilion and a solar-powered hot shower to end the day.

Sip a cup of coffee on your balcony surrounded by the creature calls of the rainforest. Spot a florescent parakeet darting through the canopy. Go for a quiet hike or raise your adrenaline by kayaking the estuary. Visit the organic farm and help harvest your dinner's ingredients. Learn to make tortillas with the resident cook. Watch a stunning sunset from a cliffside vantage point.

This is our second stay at Morgans Rock and our expectations were quite high as our previous experience was amazing. Yet again... they rocked it out. I so have to start off by describing the rooms. Each rooms feels as though your in a bungalow in the middle of the jungle. Really... no wall or closed windows everything is screened in giving you full view of the ocean and jungle intertwined as one. So... how do you stay cool during the day or nights?? Each rooms is equipped with an ultra modern air-conditioner thats installed over the bed. The "natural" breeze is not really noticeable but somehow, it keeps the bed area at a perfect temperature.... Very nice touch. Management surprised us one night and set-up candle light dinner on the beach with Tiki torches surrounding the surreal night. Best dinner venue to date (Guys... Your amazing). We stayed during low season the top chef was on vacation leaving the difficult task to his assistant. Not easy shoes to fill but we were pleasantly surprised to a variety of creations. As always, many things to do but in most cases, we just prefer to hang at the secluded beach ordering drinks from the full-time bartender.. (So cool). Don't worry about gaining weight, the yoga, paddle boarding and walking the steep steps to your room help keep everything in balance... sort of. If your looking to treat yourself to an amazing experience, Morgans Rock is your place.

Location: This ecolodge is a bit off the beaten path but is just a 30 min drive from the popular tourist spot of San Juan del Sur. After you reach the entrance you will drive another 2 miles on an unpaved road. If you are renting a vehicle and driving here I suggest a 4x4 or similar vehicle. Also, your GPS may direct you on route 72- avoid it. This is an 11 mile stretch of dirt road that is remote and on which you will lose phone service. Instead take 16 through San Juan del Sur and you will only be off road for about a mile before you hit the entrance. You are greeted by name with a lovely fresh coconut to drink and valet service for your car and bags. Room: We got a beach front room and it did not disappoint. It is like having your own personal and private beach getaway. Even though there are other guests you hardly run into them. The room has an outdoor feel, but a lot of screens. There is a wonderful outdoor porch and shower. However the bathroom inside is just as good and has an open feel. The room has WiFi, a minibar and lots of filtered drinking water. The coolest thing about the bed is that it has an air conditioning unit that floats over it so that cool air just hits the bed. This helps keep the mosquitoes away (they don’t like the cold) and helps you sleep well when it’s hot and humid. I loved this feature. WiFi: they do have a strong WiFi signal all over the property. However the wind and rain can cut out the room one which also affects the telephone in your room. Just walk down to your personal guard (yes you will have a guard) and let him know and he will radio it to the front desk. Beach: The beach here is a private horseshoe with fairly calm waters. There is a bar down there and dozens of private huts to choose from with chairs and hammocks to rest under. They also provide surf boards, boogie boards and kayaks that are free to use. There is also convenient bathroom facilities down there as well. Ask for the Macua— it’s the national drink of Nicaragua and they make a great one here (Flor de Cana rum with guava, orange and lime juice) Activities: They have a ton of activity offerings and most cost $~35-45/per person. Everything from horseback riding to hikes (both easy and hard) as well as Jeep drive to find monkeys (guaranteed to see some). In addition they have excursions to San Juan del Sur and Masaya that include things like visiting a volcano, deep sea fishing and zip lining. I think they offer top notch choices for every kind of guest whether athletic or not, family oriented, hobbyists or nature lovers. They also offer free yoga Wed and Sat mornings. Food: I read a lot of complaints about their food before I came so my expectations were low. I was surprised. It’s good. It’s like a mix of French and Nica, but more French. You are pretty much forced to eat here unless you want to venture out for every meal. Personally I didn’t think it was a big deal. They don’t really advertise this but you can request a private couple’s dinner on the beach. You can also request room service although they discourage it since it can attract bugs and other critters to your room. Bugs: it’s an ecolodge so you should be prepared for bugs and other animals. Bring bug spray and be aware of your surroundings. I mostly saw mosquitoes, regular flies, ants and spiders (although these were outside on the grounds). This is the perfect place to rest and reset. I don’t know if this is really a handicap accessible place but they say they can accommodate anyone if they are told in advance.

I constantly use TripAdvisor to help choose places to stay/eat/visit but rarely write a review. Morgan's Rock has made me decide to start! I can't even begin to describe what an amazing experience this was for our 10th wedding anniversary. It was hurriedly booked due to a canceled trip to St John after the terrible damage suffered there by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The reservations department were great from the start, putting to rest my fears about it being rainy season...which I'm glad Andrea did because we had glorious weather for our time there. Denis our driver from and to the airport was a great laugh and very entertaining tour guide. The staff at MR are PHENOMENAL. They made us feel like the most special people there. The food is fantastic and the whole place is such an adventure to stay at. The beach and especially the cabanas are like your own little piece of private paradise. Both of us has massages there and I think they were the best we've ever had. She did some weird maneuver with my shoulder blades that made me feel like a new person after! I read a review on here that warned about bugs/insects. I wasn't bothered at all by mosquitos. I was worried about the giant jungle insects and yes, we did find some in our room but honestly we found them part of the experience of stepping out of our comfort zone. I'm definitely in the category of "precious princess" that a previous reviewer warned wouldn't like MR but I loved it! (The concierge also did say that if you came across anything you would like them to deal with, not to feel silly about calling reception, that was a nice back up to have!). Special thanks to all the team at MR for making this a trip of a lifetime for us!

Our first trip to Nicaragua and we could not have chosen a better place to start our holiday at. It more than far exceeded our expectations and despite a mix up in the booking, (a week before being told we did not have a room with a splash pool), we stayed in one of the most incredible 'hotel rooms' ever. The view of the Pacific was amazing and the constant crash of the sea against the rocks was pure music. The hut was very spacious, clean, open to the elements, simple but extremely comfortable, the most amazing plumbing, wonderful balcony and some colourful guests on occasion (very friendly crabs) - no spiders or other creepy crawlies. The pool is in a fabulous location, with great views again over the Pacific. Food was excellent and plentiful. Staff were brilliant and very helpful. We had the opportunity to view (and possibly stay), in one of the villas - which was absolutely amazing. But the view from our hut was too precious to give up. Maybe next time. Lots to do to fill in your time - no need to be a beach junkie all the time. Recommend the horse riding as the views are spectacular. The manager Andrea Gomez is a real asset to Morgan's Rock.

Where do I start ? Not only the staff, accommodation, food are all exquisite as you would expect from this level of luxury resort... they also have a full program of adventurous activities on (or outside) the property. All kids friendly. But if you are not in the mood for that, you can peacefully relax on the beach, at the main pool...or privately in your own plunge pool. Cannot wait to go back !
