Morgan's Rock in Playa Ocotal, Nicaragua

A suspension bridge cuts 150 feet through thick rainforest vegetation filled with howler monkeys and three-toed sloths to connect Morgan's Rock to the outside world. Built on cliffs overlooking a private cove, bungalows in this nature-centric conclave are spacious and rustically sumptuous. Managua-based Simplemente Madera constructed certified-sustainable furniture from local hardwood, and native artist Augusto Silva honors Tunu culture in his colorful paintings. Relish an early morning yoga session at a beachfront pavilion and a solar-powered hot shower to end the day.

Sip a cup of coffee on your balcony surrounded by the creature calls of the rainforest. Spot a florescent parakeet darting through the canopy. Go for a quiet hike or raise your adrenaline by kayaking the estuary. Visit the organic farm and help harvest your dinner's ingredients. Learn to make tortillas with the resident cook. Watch a stunning sunset from a cliffside vantage point.

Definitely one of the best family vacations we ever had together, hands down. I had coveted Morgan's Rock since I saw an article about it in a travel magazine years ago, and I knew when we visited Nicaragua next, we HAD to stay at this place. We were not disappointed. I emailed MR for availability and Andrey was the one who immediately responded. He took care of our booking along with Camila. I appreciated the timely response. We were so impressed with the level of service and attention from the MR staff from the moment we stepped into the ecolodge, greeted with drinks and a smooth check-in. We loved the entrance- we were amazed with the view of the pool and the ocean. We were shown our bungalow after crossing the suspension bridge- that was amazing for us and our two children age 15 and 10. We loved the long stairs to our bungalow. It was exciting to be in the middle of nowhere, especially after a long drive to this secret place from Granada, where we had our home base earlier. We decided to move to a bungalow that was closer to the ocean and the staff were quite happy and accomdoating to please us. It was lovely to be upfront with the ocean view. We absolutely loved our bunaglow, and we found it to be very clean. We loved the crisp white bedding and the firm mattress- we slept soundlessly every night, awakening to the 5am sunset every morning- bliss!!! The futon bed held our two kids just fine, and they had fun stargazing each night. It was simply magical. It was so helpful to have the container of water refilled every day and to find glasses of water ready for us each night when they turned down our beds. The deck was perfect to lounge every morning with a cup of the Las Flores coffee from our room, and to just be in the moment. Such breathaking views. The lounge swing chair was perfect! (Now if we could have that built for our sun porch...) The food was excellent, and the wine list appealing. The service was impeccable. We want to thank Roberto, Bismark, Norvin, Nabia, Frank, and Nerling for their great service! The beach was great, we never had any problems obtaining our own cabana and it was like we had the whole beach to ourselves! It was a bonus to have the private beach to ourselves, and to have drinks from the beach bar. My kids enjoyed the boards very much. I had fanastic massages- TWICE- it was just so heavenly and the scenery was just like a dream. Nershling (spelling?) was the BEST massage therapist I ever had- and I have to thank Andrey for going all outs to ensure I could book another massage appointment in a short notice- he did, and I was paired with Nershling. Just heavenly. I hope she is still there when we return! There were plenty of activities on hand. Xavier and the kids did horseback riding with Misael twice- it was a huge hit, especially my kids adored Misael that they had to do it again with him. Such a wonderful, engaging, and fun young man he is. We also did the Sloth and Monkey Quest- it was another wonderful experience-NOT TO BE MISSED! We saw four sloths and many monkeys- and it is recommended to do a sunset tour, which was a great way to wrap it up. Comfortable 4x4 ride, with a great guide who made sure we didn't out on any sightings. Simply said, it was one of the best family vacations we had together, and we only stayed there for 3 nights before heading back to Managua. Thank you so much for a magical adventure! Thank you so much to everyone who made our stay a memorable one!

My girlfriend & were traveling throughout Nicaragua and decided to stayed at Morgans Rock as our birthday treat at the end of our holiday. Pros The beach set up was perfect with palapas and hammocks for shade, a platform for yoga (which we did independently not with a group) and a little beach bar. The bartender was great and dedicated. The bungalow was fantastic! (I specifically chose one higher up and quiet - lots of steps but liked the exercise and walking across their amazing suspension bridge) as we had a spectacular ocean view and saw the sun set into the ocean. The staff had set up an extra bed for us in the bungalow. The space which was much larger than I had expected and well laid out.The day bed on the porch was THE spot to listen to all the birds and waves crashing below. I would say the restaurant and grounds staff were very professional - attentive and eager to answer any questions. All seemed to love their job and it showed. Cons: Meal portions were generous, a good variety but not amazing. The front desk staff during check in and check out...well, I felt like we were more of a number or part of a tour group... Detached comes to mind. Maybe they were bored? They nearly forgot our "welcome drink" which was thrust on us just prior to showing us our room...OK-a detail I realize but... Having said that, maybe something was going on and it was a glitch. I agree with another reviewer that activities are quite pricey even though I appreciate it is a remote location. Perhaps one or 2 could have been free? Not only in Nicaragua, but I have stayed in some beautiful eco luxe accommodation, and a few things thrown in are worth their weight in gold. Yoga is one example. I am in the hospitality industry myself and it doesn't take much to make someone feel special. Lastly, I would say the lounge/greeting area could have been any other hotel. Boring really without any vibe. With all the local talent and resources, they could refurbish this area to make you say "WOW!" on arrival without overshadowing the natural environment and in keeping to its natural surrounds. Having said that, the the pool was spectacular! Morgans Rock low impact on the environment, its remote location, small size (15 rooms?) spectacular bungalows and its dedication to reforestation is hard to beat. I would highly recommend it for those who love nature and quiet.

The cabanas here are amazing! So spacious with a large bedroom that steps down to a smaller lower level with a desk and another bed if needed. This area then opens up to an open( unscreened) porch with a hammock type bed and chairs. It all faces the ocean and is screened from neighbors. There is even an outdoor shower in addition to the one in the bathroom. There is an air conditioner coil over the bed so you can stay cool while sleeping. We took several excursions. The horseback riding is very fun as is the monkey quest. The guides are very friendly and knowledgeable. Birding is very good- ask for their best birder to take you out as the guides are hit and miss with this activity. Pool and food are great. The beach is really nice with palapas on the beach providing shade. Not crowded so no problem getting a shaded spot. Will definitely go back!!

Don't be fooled by the bumpy less than attractive 30 minute dusty ride up to the property. Once you arrive, you are greeted by a gorgeous slice of heaven with open air bungalows directly overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The waves were fantastic for surfing - and bogey boarding, which they offer free of charge. They also put you to sleep at night. The dining was exquisite and very fresh. The ambiance was truly luxury meets nature. But the steps to climb up to the bungalows are a bit of a hike so be prepared for that. If you want to truly disconnect in this beautiful part of Nicaragua then Morgan's Rock is your place. An absolute gem. Thanks to all the staff who made the stay extra special (Frank, Junior..and many others I'm sure I'm forgetting). Gracias!
