About the Hotel

At the turn of the 20th century, William Avery Rockefeller sought refuge at Camp Wonundra, deep in New York's Adirondack Mountains. Today, the historic Great Camp on the shores of Saranac Lake has been transformed into The Point, a distinguished member of Relais & Chateaux. An exclusive collection of just 11 distinct guest quarters includes Rockefeller's former bedroom and The Boathouse, suspended over the water. Ingredients are flown in from around the world for meals in the Great Hall. After dinner, head to the onsite pub to socialize with fellow guests.

Five Stars Plus for Amazing Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed January 9, 2023

We just returned from an incredible weekend at The Point celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary joined by our adult children. We had heard that The Point was special but the experience exceeded our expectations. Most people rave about summer and autumn experiences, but I must say that going in the winter is also amazing. When the lake is frozen. there are more adventures to be had, but for us, spending time walking, dining and playing in the pub room were really fun. Lunch at Camp David, coffee in our rooms first thing, and dress up for the evening meals was super fun. It wasn't crowded right after New Year's in January so we felt like The Point was our private paradise. The Rockefeller property is luxury Adirondack with each room uniquely decorated and appointed. We stayed in the Boathouse and it was truly outstanding. The view, the fireplace, the comfort of the bed, the decor; everything was luxurious. Having a massage in the room and a photographer for our gathering were extra treats which were happily arranged. The best part of the experience was the staff who did everything to make our time magical and memorable from the moment we arrived until our sendoff. Thank you to Matt (who coordinate reservations and extras) to Kyle (an amazing host), Nate, Tyler, Kara, Shane, Josh and everyone else. What a team of lovely people who aim to please. It is so clear they all love The Point and work very hard to have their guests love it too. Thank you and we'll be back.

The Point deserves the accolades it has received. An absolute must for sophisticated travelers who appreciate exceptional service, fine dining in an intimate setting on Lake Serenac. My husband and I went during Fall Foliage season. It was absolutely stunning.

Perfect, Relaxing, Cozy Holiday Escape

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed October 11, 2022

My wife and I spent a perfect holiday season weekend at The Point just before Christmas 2021. From the moment we arrived, it was magical. In our cozy cabin, our favorite beverages awaited us, and beneath a little glass dome were some adorable desserts: A pair of cookies shaped like red stockings, and Christmas tree and snowman confections. We had visited The Point for the first time 10 months earlier and encountered a few hiccups in our stay, but our return was flawless. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful two nights. The timing of our stay meant it was far too late for summertime activities and a bit too early for most wintertime ones, so we mostly took the opportunity for our visit to be a relaxing, indulgent escape from the hecticness of the holidays. We wrote Christmas cards by the fire, had a wonderful massage, sipped cocktails in the bar and, of course, had some phenomenal meals beside the towering tree in the dining room. We enjoyed one lunch at Camp David and took a short drive to the Wild Center, an incredibly worthwhile trip when it’s awash in holiday lights. At night, we enjoyed some truffle fries, grilled cheese and hot chocolate with the best vanilla bean whipped cream you could imagine. This is a truly special property, one that I hope to return to someday soon.

Beautiful, but some service kinks to work out

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed August 13, 2022

We had a great stay at the Point. We came with high expectations and thus were a bit disappointed, but all in all had a lovely stay and will return, with our new expectations we will enjoy it even more. Obviously the location is beautiful, the staff is incredibly friendly and the all-inclusive concept and the way it is lived is amazing. The only issue we had was that we kind of expected this to be a highest-end Safari Lodge set in the Adirondacks, kind of a ‚Singita-of-the-North‘ and it was just a long way off of that. To illustrate, three examples: 1) There are lots and lots of hidden places you can hang out, read a book and relax. If you would do that at Singita Castleton, a short while after someone would come by and ask if you wanted something to drink, a snack or an extra pillow. You order (or not) and then you are left in peace. Magically after somehow just at the right time - when you think ‚actually I‘d go for another coffee‘ - they would appear again and ask. At the Point we would sit at a hammock or on the chairs at the Point of the Point and no one would come. When we wanted something to drink we would walk to the boathouse, ask for two coffees and after that they wouldn’t arrive at all or it took 40 minutes for them to arrive. -> This is quite minor, but it’s just not at the very top of the hospitality game. It is more of a ‚make yourself at home‘ vibe rather than ‚we look after you‘ 2) Same thing with the daily schedule. When you arrive they don’t plan your stay. I expected something along the lines of ‚you are staying for 4 nights, the weather is great for three, but the last day it rains so we‘d suggest you do x,y,z‘ you can do everything but also need to plan yourself. For repeater guest this is obviously less of an issue, but it helps to ease-in first timers (and while we were there most of the guests were first-timers) 3) Our AC was broken and couldn’t be switched off, we immediately asked for help, nothing happened, told it again, they said they would call the technician, nothing happened. We said it every single day and by the time we left, it was still on. One more thing they could improve regards attire. They make a big deal about the dress code and require a jacket and tie. I love that, but in reality it’s not enforced. While all people were wearing jackets for dinner, only about half the men were wearing ties. Either don’t make a dress code or enforce it (gently of course, i.e. have some ties ready). All in all these are minor issues and I think with some service flow adjustments they could fix them. I would invest into the welcome process (and goodbye for that matter) and assign a single point of contact for each room that touches 2-3 times throughout the day, help plan the day if desired and just generally has an eye out for the specific guests. As mentioned we loved it, will return, but will manage our stay more proactively next time.
