Reviews for Laguna Lodge Eco-Resort & Nature Reserve

Don’t be fooled by Conde Naste recommendation - avoid! Peanut allergy reaction and difficult to access after 5pm.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Don’t stay here if you have allergies or want to do anything after 5pm. Staff were friendly but service was passive at best and English limited. Views were impressive, rooms clean but you’ll get a good view almost anywhere on the lake - not worth the trade off being stuck once the public boats stop running. It cost us circa £20 one-way 7pm boat from Panajachel (organised by hotel) and £40 one-way 10pm boat from San Marco. We could have done a lot more on our holiday if we had stayed somewhere more accessible- would recommend San Juan or San Pedro as alternative options. Boyfriend indicated he was allergic to peanuts - had an allergic reaction. Luckily we had anti-histamines and epipen packed, but were unable to do anything for another 2 days whilst he recovered. We were offered an alternative room, but declined on basis it would have been more hassle to pack up our stuff and move. We requested drink voucher as an alternative and we were offered a bottle of wine (worth £4 upon Googling - tasted like vinegar!). Compounded by not being able to eat anywhere else, stuck at the hotel. Luckily packed some cereal bars and had bought some bottled water. We did eat breakfast and had one dinner, not great - had much better food in Antigua. Food and amenities are poor - the “gym” is an old exercise bike, there are 3 grubby yoga mats. Books in recreation room were covered in cobwebs and dead insects. When we booked 7am drive to airport, our taxi did not arrive until 7:30am so we were nervous about making our flight. Would suggest travelling back to Antigua or Guatemala City night before to avoid the stress. Wish we had only booked 1-night or not at all. Again, staff were friendly enough and tried their best with English - but wasn’t what we expected for a hotel advertising itself as English and Spanish speaking. Could easily have similar / better experience for lower price elsewhere on Lake Atitlan.

Wonderful place, Very wonderful staff who are sadly underpaid

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

This places is beautiful, quiet, spacious, clean-while-natural-materials, very fun design/architecture, easy to swim off the docks at this clean-shoreline-area. My partner and I loved our stay. the staff here are SO WONDERFUL, PLEASE talk to them and learn about their lives just a short walk to the nearest town. they are SWEET and VERY HELPFUL people. My one big complaint of this place is about the owners. I am fluent in Spanish and I like to learn from and befriend the locals when I travel. I think it is VERY APPARENT that the staff, whose families live in poverty back in their village, are VERY UNDERPAID considering their work hours and quality of their work/help given to guests. I don't know the owners' finances but considering what I paid to stay at this BEAUTIFUL and quiet location on Atitlan, I think the staff should be paid MUCH MORE and that's up to the owners to fix.

Laguna Lodge a unique & lovely experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

This is a beautifully designed & decorated unique hotel experience. The staff is lovely, caring & very helpful. Starting with captain Diego who cheerfully picked us in Panajachel & rode us to the hotel. We were shown to our room by a sweet young lady as well as helpful Leslie translating, which was a lovely upgrade with a beautiful patio & magical vista. We were travel weary & arrived at the restaurant where a very joyful & vocal young family was eating. Cruz our waiter( I consider him my friend at this point) took one look at our faces & offered us our own private tranquil romantic dining room upstairs & pretty much magic ensued. That level of insight & caring is very special. The lake is beautiful and the views constantly changing each more gorgeous than the next. I would highly recommend this lake Atitlan experience. Just note this hotel is not really easy walking distance to anything but the reserve. Though It is very easy to hail a lancha anywhere. Because of this we wound up eating at the hotel each nite. Not being vegetarian I thought might be a thing but the food was good , the atmosphere divine and the service superlative & I didn’t miss the variety of other places. I will miss this place & the wonderful people who work here tho.

Stunning location but hotel a sad disappointment

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 months ago

Staggeringly beautiful location & room was fantastic with stunning views over the lake, however, the hotel is seriously lacking in any form of management. Sadly the completely inadequate number of very poorly trained, but very friendly, staff meant our 2 night stay was hugely disappointing. The gourmet food (vegetarian only) offering they boast about was dreadful, either burnt or seriously undercooked, the quality, quantity, variety and presentation of the food was atrocious and the staff, who couldn’t speak or understand English, didn’t have a clue as to what to do about it. Regrettably there was no management on site during our stay so there was no one to complain to. I attach no blame at all on the staff, they did what they could to help but just weren’t equipped with the knowledge, skills or experience to make a difference. In my view the fault lies firmly and squarely on the management, or lack of, at the hotel. Such a shame, it should have been magical, but it just wasn’t.!!!

Felt like home. Treated like family.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 10 months ago

My husband, two adult daughters and I visited Laguna Lodge over July 4 holiday. We especially loved all the staff because of their patience, kindness and helpfulness specifically Cruz, Rosa, Leslie, Jose, Nicolas and Francisca who is the primary chef. Cruz went above and beyond for us and we loved getting to know him. Francisca’s food was always amazing. This wonderful group of people made our visit to Guatemala unforgettable! I hope they know how appreciated they are.
