Top 10 Romantic Things to Do in Mexico

Destination(s): Acapulco

Our top 10 romantic things-to-do in Mexico will make your south of the border getaway one you'll always remember. Get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life with a trip to Alameda Central while in Mexico City. A beautiful park with sparkling water fountains, sprawling shade trees, and a number of interesting sculptures and a monument to the composer Beethoven make for a relaxing and romantic afternoon in the heart of the city. Isla Blanca is a secluded stretch of pearly white sand just north of Cancun. This narrow peninsula with the ocean on one side and the Chakmuchuk Lagoon on the other side is an excellent place to fly-fish or just enjoy a quiet, secluded day with your significant other away from the crowds of the city. Playa Santa Maria is a lovely beach just outside of Cabo San Lucas. The clear blue waters are ideal for snorkeling and swimming, but come early to stake out your spot before the crowds arrive. read more about Top 10 Romantic Things to Do in Mexico

Built in the mid 50s this modest skyscraper was Latin America's tallest building for several decades. Now visitors can, for a fee, climb to the observation deck on the top floor and see how the immense Mexico City behaves. The sight is breath taking and on a clear day one can see as far as the local snow clad volcanoes and the beginning of Mexico State. Make sure to walk around the building as well as its grounds are often used as a backdrop for great sculpture exhibitions. read more about Torre Latinoamericana

Isla Blanca (literally means "white beach") is a beautiful stretch of beach, located approximately 12.5 miles north of downtown Cancun.  The name is a bit misleading, since Isla Blanca is not really an island.  Instead it is a narrow peninsula, with the sea on one side and Chakmochuk Lagoon on the other.

This area is excellent for fly-fishing.  Several tour operators run fly-fishing excursions throughout the year.  Kiteboarding is the latest craze in the Cancun area.  Daredevils wishing to give the sport a try can visit Ikarus Kiteboarding School, located very close to Isla Blanca.

The turquoise waters and white sand, combined with the lack of people, make this pristine beach a fantastic getaway for a day.

There are no organized tours to the beaches of Isla Blanca.  You will have to rent a car or hire a taxi for a few hours, if you wish to visit this area.

Cancun Underwater Museum, also known as MUSA-Museo Subacuatico de Arte, is the area's newest, and definitely the most unique, attraction.  Occupying over 1,600 square feet, it is one of the largest artificial, underwater attractions in the world.

In 3 areas, off the shores of Cancun and Isla Mujeres, over 400 sculptures have been sunk at depths of 9-20 feet.  The artwork was created by British artist, Jason deCaires Taylor, and each of the pieces was made from environmentally-friendly materials so as not to harm the environment.

The sculptures were placed near the famous Manchones reef, which is visited by over 750,000 snorkelers and scuba divers, each year.  The Underwater Museum was built to draw traffic away from the natural reef, and allow it to recover from damage caused by hurricanes, in recent years.  Over time, coral will begin to grow on the clay sculptures, creating one of the most unusual artificial reefs in the world.

Cancun Underwater Museum opened on November 26, 2010, but it will quickly become the premier spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.  Snorkel trips and dive trips can be arranged through Aqua World Cancun and Aqua Fun, as well as through other local tour operators.

For those of you that don't snorkel or dive, Aqua World Cancun offers a tour on their SubSee Explorer, which allows you to view the Underwater Museum from inside their half-boat/half-submarine water craft.

The primary way to reach this beautiful gem of a beach is by boat. You can pick up a water taxi at the Fisherman's Pier in Puerto Vallarta or from Boca de Tomatlan. This is also where you can pick up the trail to walk to the beach. It's not an easy hike, and depending on the time of year, the trail may be slippery or in a state of disrepair, but it's a beautiful adventure through the lush jungle. Once at Las Animas, you can dine at La Cueva de Los Piratas, the local beach restaurant. You'll also likely be able to grab a horse for some beach riding if you get there early enough in the day.
