Stroll along Memorial Drive for a glimpse of Boston's skyline, cross the Mass Ave bridge for a windy panorama, and trail the beautiful corridors that flow along Storrow Drive. On summer nights, free concerts at the Hatch Shell – an outdoor music venue – set the scene for nighttime picnics. read more about Charles River Esplanade

For once, it's the tourists who get it right – locals almost never experience Copenhagen in this way, and they're missing out on a treat, experiencing the old city centre from a different perspective and seeing almost all the downtown attractions from the water. DFDS Canal Tours offer five different tours of the city, ranging from 60-75 minutes in duration, both with or without a guide. They leave from Gammel Strand and Nyhavn, with longer ones taking you as far as the Little Mermaid and out into the Ųresund Channel to the tiny fortress island of Trekroner. On Sunday and Thursday evenings during summer months there's even a 90-minute jazz cruise, with live music aboard the boat. read more about DFDS Canal Tours

Tivoli Gardens

The world-famous Tivoli Pleasure Gardens first opened its doors on August 15, 1843. It's said that the park's founder, Georg Carstensen, said that Tivoli would never be completely finished and, staying true to that statement, a new ride is added each year. Another story is that Walt Disney was moved enough after visiting to attempt to purchase the gardens and after being refused, went on to design his own Disneyland in California.

But Tivoli is more than just rides: In addition to the daily Pierrot pantomime shows, there are also regular classical concerts in the concert hall and free Friday night rock concerts with big international and local names performing on the Garden's open air stage. Tivoli is also famous for its extravagant firework displays, which take place a handful of times a year. In addition to its summer season, Tivoli's Christmas opening recreates a magical winter wonderland experience, while the most recent addition is the week-long Halloween season (which actually coincides more with the school autumn holiday than October 31). read more about Tivoli Gardens

Though many of the city's museums have children's wings, this is the only one designed specifically with kids in mind. The Experimentarium is the national science museum, and here the 'no touching' signs have been replaced with levers, buttons and triggers, all designed to stimulate youngsters' interest in questioning how and why things work the way they do. Admission is a little on the steep side, but there's enough exhibits here to last a whole afternoon, and the restaurant is reasonably priced. The disabled access is exceptional.

Denmark's Aquarium is a great place to take smaller children who might find the zoo a bit overwhelming or find the smaller animals difficult to spot. With more than 300 marine species on show—from large turtles, squids and sharks to tiny seahorses—the exhibits here are really quite fascinating. There are also 'touch pools' in the basement where children get the chance to come close to crabs, flatfish and other tiny sea creatures every day at 10.30am. Visitors can now extend their visit until 8pm on Wednesdays.

Frederiksberg Have

Frederiksberg Have

  • Frederiksberg Runddel 1
  • tel:+45 7022 2442 (Tourist Information)
  • Frederiksberg, 2000

Designed in the romantic style during the 1700s, Frederiksberg Gardens stretch out from the entrance at the end of Frederiksberg Alle with a glorious view of the central boating lake and the gently sloping lawns, with Frederiksberg Palace standing regally at its top. This Baroque-styled mansion was inspired by Frederik IIII's trips to Italy, and is now a school for military officers. It's usual to see almost-tame herons standing sentry around the lake, and the 200 year-old Chinese pagoda lends a more exotic air to the park. With blankets and baskets, families enjoy long picnics on the lawns, while the children's playground is another popular spot. Frederiksberg Have is neighbor to the wilder recreational area of Sųndermarken as well as Copenhagen Zoo, located on Roskildevej. read more about Frederiksberg Have

  • Klampenborg, 2930

A gentle stroll from Klampenborg Station takes you into the woods of Dyrehaven, a former royal hunting ground. The giddy screams ahead should give you a clue that Bakken, the world's oldest amusement park, lies hidden amongst the trees. Open from the end of May until the end of September, entry to the 400 year-old park is free and tickets to the rides – some thankfully newer than the still-functioning wooden rollercoaster from 1932 – can be purchased singly or as a pass at Bakken's entrance. For the less young at heart, there are also plenty of restaurants, from fast food to traditional Danish, and revue-style entertainment. Alternatively, venture out into the 1000 hectares of woodland that is Dyrehaven, all completely open to the public and accessible by foot or bicycle. Deer have roamed freely in the forest since 1670, when they were introduced to what was then a royal hunting ground by King Frederik III, as a gift for his son. read more about Dyrehaven & Bakken

While serious HC Andersen fans may find this obvious tourist trap more gimmick than content, kids are sure to love the recreation of Andersen's timeless fairy tales in colorful tabelaux that utilize light and sound effects. This museum is managed by the 'Top Attractions' firm, who also own Ripley's Believe It or Not!, and the Guinness World Records museums in Copenhagen, and offers similar family-friendly exhibits. During the summer, this museum is open until 10pm daily.

Amager has long been a popular bathing spot for Copenhageners ever since the original Helgoland Baths were built back in the 1930s; it wasn't until 2005, however, that the beach park was completely redesigned and transformed into a three mile-long coastline of new sand, complete with a laguna and artificial island. The area is so extensive that despite numerous summer activities including several beach bars and children's theatre, the area never seems crowded and it's always possible to get a spot to yourself. It can feel a bit windswept at times, though the views of the Sweden-Denmark bridge (Ųresundsbroen) are very impressive. An ideal spot to get away from the city, whether you're into sailing, swimming or just plain sunbathing, and easily accessible by public transport (including the Metro).

Charlottenlund Strandpark

  • Strandvejen 144b

Pleasant sandy beach close to public transport , complete with lifeguards, changing facilities and toilets, as well as an ice cream cafe and bathing jetties. Above the beach there's a well-maintained grassy plain for beach games and sun bathing, close to the remains of a castle (Charlottenlund Fort) dating from 1886. The place gets packed with beautifully tanned young Danes from the affluent local area in the summer months. From April to October, it's also possible to camp here. read more about Charlottenlund Strandpark

Den Lille Havfrue

Den Lille Havfrue

  • Langelinie
  • Langelinie on the harbor
  • Copenhagen, 2100

Denmark's most photographed tourist attraction is also the nation's smallest and, for many, something of an anticlimax. A tribute to the most well known of Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen's characters, the bronze figurine The Little Mermaid has sat on her rock out in the Ųresund Channel along Langelinie since 1913; over the decades she has been vandalized numerous times, most famously in 1964, when she was decapitated in what later turned out to be an artist's prank. In 2006, The Little Mermaid acquired a neighbor, Bjųrn Nųrgaard's 'Genetically Modified Mermaid', a contemporary commentary on the landmark. Those hoping to be photographed next to the sculpture in 2010 may have a longer journey than they anticipated: The Little Mermaid is to be moved temporarily to Shanghai, as part of world exhibition EXPO's Danish Pavilion. read more about Den Lille Havfrue

Beyond those gates is a well-manicured, but still approachable public garden.
