In the Roaring Twenties, Parisian hotel bars invented some of the most exciting libations. And today, after a dry spell, cocktails are having a comeback, as speakeasy-style joints like the Experimental Cocktail Club and Candelaria are shaking things up by skipping French burgundy in favor of mixologists and taco trucks. Still, you can’t beat the palace hotels for ambience. After all, this is where famous habitués like Ernest Hemingway used to imbibe. (Bar Hemingway will reopen soon at the Ritz Paris after a major renovation). Our pick is Le Meurice, the legendary palace hotel on rue de Rivoli which is celebrating its 180th anniversary this year. William Oliveri, Bar Manager at Le 228, has been mixing cocktails for 37 years. Among the guests he’s served? Salvador Dali, who used to shack up at the hotel.

As a treat we get to stay here a couple of times a year. It is not cheap but in comparison with price levels in this category of hotels it is exceptional and worth pushing the boat out. Paris has several hotels (Crillon and the Ritz) which have been off the market whilst they underwent refurbishment and some newcomers too (La Réserve) so the competition at the pricier end is on for those times when you are laying out the cash to be amongst them. Hotels at the cheaper end and offering value but comfort are rare indeed if not non-existent in Paris and starting a bit further out improves what’s on offer. Le Meurice give attention to every detail. The staff are enthusiastic and genuinely warm. Even when busy (there was a group event going on during our stay) the friendly smile and human touch remain. At peak time in the hotel’s stunning bar (the best late night watering hole in the city) we had to wait 5 minutes for a table and a sneaky couple of people cut in ahead and sat down. The bar manager apologised genuinely for letting them slip in and found us a great table and then came back offering a nicer spot within a few minutes. Trivial to some but you look forward to the trip and the jostle for a bar spot or breakfast sitting even in a hotel like this can be annoying at times when you are spending a lot on the experience and I think Le Meurice really tries. Beyond all that, the décor is sumptuous and calm. The dining room is the most beautiful anywhere and a glance up at it’s ceiling will help you to get into the groove. The staff do take it all very seriously but with a genuine, never stiff or antiseptic, smile. They try hard here and they do remember when you have been before. Not for nothing will you sleep like never before here. If you are ever thinking of treating yourself to a top notch luxury hotel in Paris, this is the one to book.

My family and i spent 5 wonderful days at Le Meurice for my birthday celebration and our stay could not have been better. It was important to me that we choose a hotel that was a classic representation of Paris. The location is perfect with so many destinations within walking distance ( steps from the Tuileries Gardens, the Louvre, the Musee D'Orsay, L'Orangerie, the Grand Palais, Champs Elysee, Place Vendome and the Opera Palais Garnier). The room was spacious and exquisitely decorated. After visiting all of that, you can stop at Angelina for hot chocolate, which is right next door! The level of service is what really sets Le Meurice apart. From being personally greeted by the managers to near immediate delivery of housekeeping requests, the staff anticipated our needs and delivered exceptional service. The concierge staff is fantastic. The breakfast is quite possibly one of the best we've ever had. Le Meurice made a special occasion even more memorable. It is an amazing hotel for family vacations. Very kids friendly. We must compliment the management and staff of this hotel for maintaining its standing as one of the top luxury hotels in Paris! We highly recommend this property. Worth every penny!

There is a class of five-star hotel that no one can touch, and I feel like I have been able to experience this treasure trove of luxury on a few lucky occasions in Europe. I have never seen a city with such a wide range of five-star hotel class; Paris is certainly unique. Sometimes with five-star in Paris, you get a really good four. This is the first place in Paris I have stayed where a five-star experience has actually been a six or seven star luxury extravaganza. Le Meurice is the epitome of service, elegance, luxury and class. Plus, it holds the city's best location, Hands down. My husband and I head to Paris at least a couple times a year for work, always stopping by the Le Meurice Bar 228 for a whiskey sour. This time, we thought we would see what its rooms are all about and have a stay at what is now our new Parisian home. Upon walking up from the taxi, the bell men wisp your luggage away and escort you to reception. I was instantly overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the lobby, an area I always bypassed for cocktails! What a special space. The art, the lighting, the people, all so beautiful. Our room was ready at 10:00am. I was shocked. We were given a quick tour of the hotel's main level and then taken up the back elevators to room #334. This is a newly renovated room which can be part of the Pompadour Suite, if rented in expanded form. The room overlooked Rue de Castiglione, with side views to Place Vendome and the Tuileries Gardens if you're daring enough to stick your head out the window. It was the perfect size for two people looking for romance and a little peace and quiet. The room featured a generous bar, lovely restroom with separate shower and tub, dual vanity and lovely ambient lighting. Each table was topped with classic white marble and the room featured these lovely modern copper lamps. The whole thing was so classic with a sweet modern edge. Rounding out the aesthetics was a live orchid plant and a large painting that retracted into the wall to reveal a Bang and Olufsen television. Just spectacular! In addition, the room was equipped with Bluetooth and speakers to stream your own music; a great touch! The bed was a pillow of perfection and the lavender mist provided at turn-down made falling asleep extra special. Fantastic lighting controls and automatic blackout shades rounded out a high-tech haven of luxury. I hope to stay in this exact room again next time. Just like in the past, we hit up the 228 Bar but this time every single evening before or after dinner. The entire team in there was so kind, friendly and accommodating. One gentleman recognized my husband from past trips and by the end of this visit, I think we crossed paths with everyone on the staff. The service, ambiance and drinks made every evening one of a kind. The treats created by the world-renowned Cedric Grolet and his team made our mouths water with ever bite. Le Citron Noir is the way to go in my opinion. I simply cannot wait to return to Le Meurice. Thank you all for a fantastic stay! Cheers!
