Kansas

  • Buenos Aires

An American-style barbeque may not jive with your concept of the Argentine culinary experience - huge steaks and sausages, piles of French fries, and inexpensive wine in pitchers define the norm here. However, Kansas, an American grill located adjacent to Buenos Aires' famous hipódromo horse racetrack, is an upscale, atmospheric grill with a comfortable bar area, classy black leather booths, and impressive service that would knock the socks off restaurant managers around the city - not to mention the food. Order up a few beers, enormous caesar salads, authentic bacon swiss cheeseburgers, and 20-inch rib racks, and top it off with an ice cream sundae to be amazed at just how well Buenos Aires does - or out-does - American barbeque food. read more about Kansas

This restaurant would surprise even those who say that food doesn't make much of an impact on their day. From the stark interior to the attentive but not obsequious staff, they are used to making people feel at home, and will explain any food questions you may have in English or Spanish. Recent offerings included mero (a white fish) served over a purée of white beans with a savory sauce and a paella-like mix of shrimp with saucy rice. Veal, seared deer, octopus and other lesser-found meats in Chile also appear on the menu.

No detail is overlooked, from a dropped napkin to the possibility of ordering your post-meal coffee exactly how you like it. Wine pairings are suggested if you like, and no one will look at you askance should you prefer mineral water. A chocolate "volcano" (lava cake) served beside cardamom ice cream is featured in this entry's photo, and that and other desserts merit the extra time at what is a relaxed business lunch environement at lunch times.

Widely renowned as the best French restaurant – if not the best restaurant, period – in Rio, Olympe offers immaculately prepared food in sophisticated yet welcoming surrounds. The kitchen is headed up by Claude Troisgras, a member of the multi-award-winning French family of chefs and something of a local celebrity in Rio. Troisgras has created a menu of inventive dishes that give a distinctly carioca twist to French classics, and the dishes, which start at around R$60, are well worth the money. read more about Olympe

This award-strewn restaurant at the impossibly glamorous Fasano Rio hotel offers Italian cuisine of the highest standard. The decor, dominated by marble, wood and white linen, oozes luxury, and this is the perfect spot for a romantic occasion. Make no mistake, reservations are absolutely necessary, but the extensive menu, which has an emphasis on seafood, and excellent wine list are well worth the effort and the steep prices. Valet parking is provided. read more about Fasano Al Mar
