We rolled into Stowe at the end of a long day that wasn't supposed to be this long. We had just ended a cruise with our eldest daughter and boyfriend and shipped them home (parcel post) and began our drive through New England from Montreal. What was supposed to be a 2 to 3 hour drive became a 5 hour trek. First, it rained miserably which made Montreal's exit traffic and roads under ever present repair even worse. Second, there was the hour wait at the border. So, we had to abandon our desire to take Route 2 through the Lake Champlain islands and just make a beeline to our 2 night stay at Stowe. We checked in and were given a great room, room 1515. The room was not particularly spacious but the view was gorgeous which we didn't really appreciate until the next morning because we arrived late in the day. However, we found out that the outside lock to the screened window didn't work and being cautious, we put the lamp table into the tracks for security sake. And, the gas fire place kept going out so the ambiance was not quite as expected. When we awoke the next morning and could appreciate our surroundings, we peeked out our window and were astonished at the beauty. When we spoke to the locals, we were told that prior to yesterday's rain, the colors were drab but the rain popped them out. Well, the foliage was gorgeous beyond belief and our room showcased the trees perfectly. We were about 3/4 up Mt. Mansfield and clouds hung low around the trees highlighting their magnificence. Immediately, we forgave locks and fireplaces. After all, we were still alive, weren't we? Later that morning after breakfast, we complained to the front desk and were dutifully told that both the lock and the fireplace would be fixed upon our return after our day's adventures. We were heading to Shelburne Farm after being told by the concierge that it was a "can't miss." (separate review to follow) Well, after we got back late in the afternoon from Shelburne Farms by way of a delightful route the concierge gave us through Smuggler's Notch, neither the lock nor the fireplace was fixed as promised. The lock, of course, was the biggest concern because in today's world, security is a necessity. So, back in the track went the lamp table with some chagrin. I had the feeling (even when I reported the lock and the fireplace that morning) that I was being gamed by our pleasant clerk and would be "out waited" i.e. we would be gone the next day so the repairs would slide. I have experienced this occurrence before in travel and it is irritating. We explored the immediate property. There is an charming little village with a few shops and a cool little gondola ride appropriately named "Over Easy." We ate at the Solstice restaurant (separate review to follow) that evening and plotted our next days adventures with Adrienne, a different desk clerk from the clerk that we complained to about the lock and fireplace. Adrienne was kind and knowledgeable. She mentioned things our previous desk clerk had not and gave us maps of hiking trails helpfully delineated easy, moderate and difficult. We are hikers, bike riders and horseback riders but because we had a long day ahead of us up to Mt. Washington by way of the Kancamaugus Highway, all unknown routes to us, we had to leave early to get to the Mt. Washington Resort before dark (especially since it was the figurative backdrop for Stephen King's "The Shining"). So, we could not go hiking unfortunately around this spacious and beautiful property. So, we will be back for sure, God willing. We want to take the hikes our brief visit did not permit us to do. Well defined and gradated hikes are much appreciated. And, if we are really lucky, the foliage will approximate the beauty of this visit. But, please fix the lock on room 1515 and its fireplace. And, something tells me, other rooms need fixing too. You can't compromise security by waiting until guests leave so you won't have to act.

My boyfriend and I loved our stay at Stowe mountain lodge. It was the perfect winter weekend escape from our busy NYC lives (we even extended our stay an extra night)! The reason I only gave it four stars was because we felt as though the beds were a uncomfortable and the restaurants were limited and outrageously expensive. That being understandable in a high end environment, it still wasn’t quite worth it. I wish we knew to explore downtown Stowe a little bit more bc it was adorable the restuarants are great. The staff was incrediblely kind, friendly and engaging. It’s hard to find a place that we both enjoyed so much, we can’t wait to book our next trip to Stowe Mountain Lodge.

Very relaxing and enjoyable time. We took advantage of the "Retreat Yourself" special. Would do it again. Only complaint, outdoor pool could have been a little warmer. Other than that, no complaints. Loved the spa.

Went for a weekend to get away from it all and yes, we were away in heaven. This place has everything to offer to kids or adults. Very clean, very spacious, very hospitable, and quiet. Loved the idea of a heated pool and hot tub outside with a gorgeous mountain view as your background. Also, it is like a small town all right there for you so you don't have to travel anywhere if you don't want to. Can't wait to go back.

Great place to bring family together. Fun for everyone! The Stowe area has a lot to offer _ Beautiful scenery, unique places to visit and a peaceful setting. Mother Nature did her job by adding a bit of snow just like icing on the cake.
