Texas Trip Itineraries

San Antonio Family Fun Week

Destination(s): San Antonio

Don't be overwhelmed. I know that there is way too much stuff in this itinerary to ever be able to do with kids in tow, but I tried to give you several different options. Just pick and choose what you like out of it all, and do it. I don't have kids, but if I did, I know that this would be a kid's dream trip. Thinking back to every kid-friendly activity I loved growing up in San Antonio, this trip would surely be an action-packed kid-pleaser. Mind you, this is a five day trip, so I hope you have lots of endurance. Of course the success of this itinerary will be different if your kids are very young, so this trip is based on ages 6-12. Disclaimer/Apologies to Parents: I don't know if family vacations truly do revolve around kid-satisfaction, but this one does. read more about San Antonio Family Fun Week

The River Walk is a must-see for any traveler to San Antonio. The River Walk was conceived in 1929. Downtown had serious flood problems, and Robert Hugman suggested that the city turn the San Antonio River into an asset rather than a hindrance. Hugman's brainchild has since become the essence of the city. Stairways down to the River Walk can be found on street level throughout downtown. Walk down anywhere you like, and wander and explore the great shops, galleries, restaurants and sights. To get the full story on the history of the River Walk, take the Rio San Antonio river barge cruise for a 45-minute narrated tour. It is well worth the price. read more about River Walk

This 343-acre park just north of downtown San Antonio is the best deal in town for family fun. The park is set along a quieter part of the San Antonio River and there are picnic areas, playgrounds, pedal boats, and even a carousel. The San Antonio Zoo Eagle, the miniature train right outside the zoo, is one of the cheapest thrills in town. Adults are only $2.75 and children are $2.25. The ride chugs 3.5 miles along the San Antonio River, over bridges and through tunnels throughout the park. Have fun all day but don't linger in the park after dusk, when it is not so safe.

If ground transportation is more your speed, opt for a ride on the miniature train that runs through a 3.5-mile stretch of the park. For water travel, cruise around the upper part of the San Antonio River in paddleboats. Other facilities include a municipal golf course, a driving range, bike trails and picnic areas. read more about Brackenridge Park

Great views from over 600 feet above the city. Here's a money-saving tip. Instead of paying $10.95 for a ticket to the observation deck at the top of the tower, apply that money towards lunch or dinner at The Chart House restaurant or to just go have a drink at Bar601 (the ride is free for restaurant and bar customers). Check out the Tower of the Americas Plaza, at street level, during the summer. Every Friday night from 7-midnight, there is live music, car shows and other free events. read more about Tower of the Americas
