Thailand Trip Itineraries

Top 10 Restaurants in Thailand

Destination(s): Chiang Mai

There's no place in the world where Thai cuisine tasted better than in Thailand, so make sure you take advantage of the fresh, perfectly prepared Thai dishes while you're there. Restaurant owners have thought of everything and they offer English menus with pictures in almost every location, not to mention that some of the settings themselves are enough to feed your appetite for beauty and uniqueness.

Our strong suggestion is that you try some vegetarian places even if you consider yourself a serious meat eater, as you'll be surprised of the creativity and tasted some chefs manage to handle. Khun Churn Thai Vegetarian Restaurant is one of the best, but there's also Aum Vegetarian Restaurant. However, if you don't want to give up on the meat (or at least on some fresh seafood) make sure you reserve a table at Acqua Restaurant or at the popular Suda. For the best views go at The Deck, but make sure you actually order something instead of bothering the diners exclusively for the photo opportunity. read more about Top 10 Restaurants in Thailand

Khun Churn Thai Vegetarian Restaurant

  • Bangkok Mediplex Bldg., Sukhumvit 42 Road
  • Bangrak
  • tel:0-2713-6599

  • Bangkok, 10500

Khun Churn is Khun , a restaurateur with a passion for healthy food. She got her start in a small kitchen in Chiang Mai in the early 90s, and opened this third location in the basement floor of the Bangkok Mediplex Building. You will not find another menu in Bangkok so filled with organic and macrobiotic veggie options. Most dishes are traditional Thai recipes with creative substitutions. Tom Yum Mushroom, fresh spring rolls, a lovely pomelo salad. For example, order Laab and Nam Tok dishes with mushrooms replacing the pork or some soy-based "chicken" recipes. Everything is fresh and the herbal and fruit juice blends are fantastic. From the Ekamai BTS Skytrain station take the pedestrian bridge into the Mediplex and go two floors down into the lowest level; Khun Churn is on the right at the bottom of the staircase.

Secret Garden

Secret Garden

  • Bangkok, 10120

Despite the name the place is no secret. The food is reasonably priced Thai fare and the setting is as wonderful as the flavor. Fish is fresh, generally fried. Curries and noodle dishes lean toward the milder foreign tongue unless you ask for more heat. A bright café offers air-conditioning but the preferred seats are likely the ones in the garden courtyard behind it. Set out beneath a massive old tree with strings of lights dangling from its branches, this casual but classy eatery makes a nice romantic setting. A nice bakery is also on site making this a good coffee break, and off street parking is a nice plus in such a busy neighborhood. Check out the Earl Grey cake!

Suda

Suda

  • 6-6/1 Soi 14, Sukhumvit Road
  • tel:+66 2 229 4518
  • Bangkok, 10110

This corner restaurant is a good economical choice, popular with a mix of foreigners and locals. The expansive, but strictly Thai menu shows English names and photos and so makes Suda a good place to explore the cuisine a bit. The quality of the recipes isn't earthshattering but it isn't bad either and the restaurant has a loyal fan base. Bright orange plastic chairs spill out onto the walk and tables fill up quickly at night. Beer is served as is whiskey, but only the Thai version. The assorted bottles stored around the joint are actually left there by customers who come back regularly to keep working on them. Suda's convenient location just off Sukhumvit Road under the Asoke SkyTrain station doesn't hurt either. read more about Suda

  • Rattanakosin Island
  • tel:66 0 2 221 9158

  • Bangkok, 10200

Located just a short walk from Wat Pho, this restaurant serves refined Thai food and Italian pastas with outdoor seating that overlooks the Chao Phraya River. Opposite the river is Wat Arun which when lit up at night creates an ambiance for this eatery like no other. The upstairs bar Amorosa enjoys the same view. The hot spices are backed off a bit to accommodate the foreign palate; you might request extra spice if you prefer. There is also indoor seating available but it sacrifices the view. Reservations are highly recommended. If you are just going for the sunset be sure to at least order a drink at the bar. The place is cozy and romantic, so the management frowns on tourists who merely tromp through for the photo opp.

Baan Rim Pa is located right next to another of Phuket's best restaurants, Da Maurizio. Both places share breathtaking views of the ocean and the Bay of Kalim. Baan Rim Pa offers a one-of-a-kind menu, though. The dishes served here were once reserved for only Thailand's royalty. Though the ingredients are basic (chicken, noodles, prawns), the preparation and flavors are not. Secure a place on the open balcony and try the herbed crispy vermicelli or the fried rolled fish topped with garlic sauce. Both are favorites here and a good example of the Baan Rim Pa's attention to detail. For a taste of something local, order Tom Kloang Pla Grob, a smoked dried fish served in a spicy soup. read more about Baan Rim Pa Restaurant
