From Sea to Shining Sea: Luxury Link Honors the Great American Road Trip with a “World’s Best” List of Great American Drives
Los Angeles, CA – June 27, 2007 – For many, it’s a rite of passage that comes with the newfound freedom of young adulthood. For others, it’s a trip down memory lane. In a nod to the time-honored tradition of the American road trip, Luxury Link (www.LuxuryLink.com), the online travel company that auctions high-end vacations to destinations around the globe, has rounded up the top eight Great American Drives and selected the best luxury properties to visit en route. Now available on the website, these scenic drives are the latest addition to Luxury Link’s “World’s Best” listings of the greatest in travel.
“There’s an undeniable romance to the American road trip,” said Diane McDavitt, president and chief operating officer of Luxury Link. “No other mode of travel affords the same spontaneity – the freedom to go at one’s own pace and to stop or take a detour at whim. And these eight Great American Drives represent the road trip tradition at its very best, offering some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, along with an opportunity to experience the history and culture of a region on a level increasingly rare at today’s accelerated pace.”
The top eight “Great American Drives” were selected by a blue ribbon panel of Luxury Link travel editors and VIP users. They include:
1. Hana Highway, Maui: On one side, lush tropical rainforest. On the other, the wide-open expanse of the Pacific. This 52-mile stretch of rugged volcanic coastline, complete with plenty of hairpin turns, travels from Pa’ia to Hana Town past spectacular waterfalls, eucalyptus groves, and miles of bamboo.
2. Pacific Coast Highway (northern portion), California: Leaving Santa Barbara, a dramatic landscape unfolds on this northward drive that encompasses national parks, farmland, vineyards and classic California beach towns before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge into Muir Woods National Monument and Redwood National Park.
3. Route 66, Arizona: Immortalized in song and literature, America’s iconic cross-country highway exists only in portions today, but a 165-mile stretch through the spectacular Arizona desert takes travelers back to the days of top-down, open-road freedom and Main Street living, and even farther back to the Wild West.
4. Pacific Coast Highway (southern portion), California: California Dreamin’ is alive and well on this legendary drive up the SoCal Coast from San Diego to Santa Barbara. There are plenty of stops along the way -- to soak up the history of San Juan Capistrano’s famous mission, shop the notorious O.C., and people-watch amid the sun and surf of Venice, Santa Monica and Malibu – before savoring a glass of wine at a Santa Barbara vineyard.
5. A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Highway (Florida): Uninterrupted ocean views and a thriving coastal ecosystem reward drivers along the A1A. Flanked by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Intercoastal Waterway on the other, this stretch of road runs along Florida’s East Coast from Jacksonville Beach through the historic city of St. Augustine to Flagler Beach.
6. Mount Baker Scenic Byway (Washington): It may be short, but each of this road’s 57 miles packs a punch with breathtaking views of the Nooksack River and Mt. Baker-Snoquaimie National Forest. The byway connects Bellingham to Artist Point, winding past miles of trails that beckon travelers to pull off the road for a hike through this natural wonderland.
7. soVT Loop (Vermont): The journey is the destination on this drive, which both begins and ends in Manchester. In between, there are covered bridges, rushing streams, snow-capped mountains, galleries and antique shops to explore, along with historic sites such as the Robert Frost Stone House and Bennington Battle Monument.
8. Ashley River Road (South Carolina): Spanish moss hanging from live oaks creates a cathedral effect along this meandering byway, redolent with magnolia blooms and the romance of the low country. It’s a mere 11 miles from end to end, but travelers will be content to take it slow and soak up the culture of the Old South, from historic Charleston to the Audobon cypress swamp garden of Magnolia Plantation.
Luxury Link travelers who are inspired to head for the open road can use the site’s package locator to immediately book or bid on the getaway of their dreams at any of the destinations featured in the “Great American Drives.”
