Guana Island

The slogan on the BVI license plates says "Nature's Little Secrets" and Guana must be one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean. Guana Island is an 850-acre privately owned island. At full capacity, they handle about 30 guests. This is a place to really get away and relax, literally off the grid. So, how do you transform from a hassled traveler (worried about a connecting flight or the ferry schedule), to a place of peace and serenity? It starts with the 10-minute boat ride from Tortola. Arriving at Guana Island, we were warmly greeted by Jason, the General Manager. We felt as though we were personal guests. Jason, April and the entire staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect. From the website, I had a pretty good idea about what to expect, but here are some thoughts, and some things that surprised me.

It's like being on a private island with a group of friends. The first day we were greeted by the guests who had arrived before us. By the second day we knew everyone. Every time someone had to leave it was a sad event, accompanied by an exchange of email addresses. So, although you could find complete privacy, it was a social atmosphere.

Almost everyone had booked the trip through LuxuryLink! At times it was a like a little convention of LuxuryLink travelers - we compared notes on which packages we have purchased through LL, etc. It was a young crowd. We met three couples on their honeymoons. There was a variety of ages, but overall younger than I expected.

There are no organized activities, no phones, no TV. Once a week (usually Fridays) there's a BBQ down by the beach and a steel band. This was our last night there, and a great way to end a wonderful vacation. They also have "old movie" night about once a week (usually Thursdays), where a movie is shown outdoors in a lovely garden area. They're not trying to sell you excursions, but you could arrange to go out diving or on a trip to another island. The one activity that is popular is the "castaway picnic". A boat drops you at a remote beach on the island for a couple of hours, with a picnic lunch. This is an extra $75/couple, but certainly a unique experience. You have a prearranged time to be picked up, but they also give you a 2-way radio for emergencies.

The main building and cottages are up on a ridge. So everyone has a view of the sea, but not quite the same view. It's about a 10-minute walk down to the beach, and someone is always around to drive you back up. It's a bit steep, and after a day at the beach, we were grateful to accept the lift up the hill. The main beach is excellent, with soft sand and clear water. There are water toys, snorkel gear, kayaks, sunfish and a little catamaran. The massage hut is down by the beach also.

The main dining area consists of three tables for eight. There's another little deck with two tables for two. For dinner there's a seating chart. Your first night you're seated with just your party in this little private area. The other nights you're with others in the main area. But you can request a private table, and there are a couple of other secluded areas if you'd prefer dinner there. Breakfast and lunch are buffets. For breakfast there's also a "special" from the kitchen, such as pancakes or a special omelet. You can always order eggs or other items if you dont want the special. There's a option to have lunch brought to you on the beach. As with everything else, you just have to ask.

Dietary needs were accommodated. When booking the trip, they asked if we had special dietary considerations, and then asked again when we were checking in. With so few guests, there isn't the same variety of food choices that you would have at a large resort. But the quality is very high. Much of the produce is actually grown on the Island. Dr. Liao, the resident botanist, will give you a tour of the orchard. To meet Dr. Liao is an experience itself. He is one of the one most serene human beings I have ever met. One of the honeymoon couples that we met are vegans. They told me that the food exceeded their wildest expectations. For example, they had cream soups made with soy milk and rumor has it their poached pear was even better than the regular dessert.

850 acres is pretty big. If I thought we would hike every trail during our 5-day stay, that thought was quickly dispelled. Due to the heat, we only hiked before breakfast. If hiking is your thing, bring appropriate footwear. There are lots of ups and downs, rocky areas, etc. Sneakers worked for me.

The night sky was amazing. Jason told us the best place to look at the stars is from the deck behind the kitchen. You see nothing but the sky.

How to get there? The closest airport, Beef Island in Tortola, is only a ten-minute boat ride away. Guests from the U.S. seem to take American Eagle from Puerto Rico to Tortola. From Britain, the easiest way seemed to be on Liat from Antigua. Or, you can fly into St. Thomas and take a ferry, as we did. That way, you could also spend a night or two on St. John.

It's so hard to leave that there is a special ceremony for departing guests. They give you a hibiscus flower and take your photo. Then as the boat pulls away, you toss the flower into the water. If it floats back to shore, you'll visit Guana again. I certainly hope our flowers made it back, and that we will also.

    What about bug bites?
  2. disneygal's Avatar
Mountie, thanks for reminding me to comment on this! I came with an arsenal of supplies, thanks to BonnieJoy03 and others for your recommendations. In the late afternoon there were a few sand flies, so I squirted some spray. It was really a non-issue. They had cans of OFF down by the beach that you could use also. There's a big tree on the beach that many sit under for shade. I think the bugs were worse there, so we asked for an umbrella instead. Overall, I did get a few bites. In the evening you're up away from the beach, where it's no issue at all.

Hi Disneygal. Thanks for the great post. I just love that region. We have flown over Guana but never stopped there. I think it is definitely on my radar now!!! Glad I could help with the bug bites. Funny thing is that in Costa Rica, it was pretty rainy and we didn't have mosquitos!! I did get bit by some nasty monster bugs (two I think they were vampires!). How were the tennis courts at Guana? Could you go visit the other islands on your own? I know Biras has Boston Whalers for their guests so they can explore the North Sound. Did you have the same?

Hi bonniejoy03. Glad you had a great time in Costa Rica! They had 2 tennis courts on Guana, down near the beach (the flattest spot I guess). I didn't see anyone using them, but they appeared to be maintained and in perfect condition. There weren't any power boats that you could take out on your own. You would have to schedule something and have them take you. Some folks did go out on diving trips for example. Most of us just took out kayaks and only got as far as we could paddle. The water was kind of rough some days, so we couldn't go too far. Hope your bites are going away!

Hi Disneygal: How did you get to VG? Did you use Air Sunshine? (I might have missed this.) Did you have any rain going in November? Does Guana have a pool? Thanks for your help. Also, any talk around the property about the future developments going on in the BVI's?
  6. disneygal's Avatar
Hi bonniejoy03, Guana is very close to Tortola. They pick you up at Trellis Bay, North Sound dock I think it's called. It's the same dock where you would get a ferry from Tortola to VG. We flew AA direct from Boston to St. Thomas. Stayed a night in St. Thomas, then took a ferry from Red Hook to West End Tortola. Then it was a 50-minute taxi ride to the dock at Trellis Bay. The ferry was less than half an hour, but longer on the way back since you have to get off in St. John and go through customs. We did more or less the same thing on the return, spending another night in St. Thomas.

I was concerned about rain, but the weather was perfect. There was only about an hour of rain one afternoon, and a few showers during the night. There is no pool on Guana, unless you stay at the North Beach Cottage, which has its own private pool. There was a couple staying there and they recommended it - you're on your own private beach. You also get a golf cart, since it's a hike to the main area for meals, etc. But the water there is rough, so it's not good for swimming.

We did talk some people about development in the BVI's. We were told that for many years there's been a plan to make the Beef Island airport on Tortola into an international airport that can handle large jets, more flights, etc. There is much opposition to this. Believing that this will happen eventually though, there's a plan to develop Scrub Island. There's a plan for a resort, golf course, etc. http://www.mainsailbvi.com But we heard they are destroying the reef as part of that development. So sadly, overall, the news was negative. What have you heard?
  7. bonniejoy03's Avatar
Thanks for the update. Interesting connections to the island. We like going through St. Thomas or San Juan and then taking Air SUnshine directly to VG. It saves a lot of time. Yes, we heard about the Scrub Island project. THey are also voting on projects on Mosquito Island (maybe Branson doing some of the development?) Beef Island is supposed to be receiving a golf course! On VG, there might be some changes around Nail Bail. I believe Biras Creek area will see some development. Wow...the list goes on....

Sounds like a wonderful place - thanks for sharing your experiences. Funny, it reminds me of Young Island in St. Vincent so much! Have you been there as well?
  9. disneygal's Avatar
Hi Syrene-1. We haven't been to Young Island, but I've often eyed it up on LL. The other comparison that we made was to Palm Island in the Grenadines. We also did a LL package for that trip. Guana was far superior in so many ways. We liked the casual atmosphere on Guana. I think it starts with the management, treating everyone as a friend rather than a hotel guest.

Have you been to Young Island? I would like to hear more... We met a couple in our travels who spoke very highly of it.
  10. disneygal's Avatar
I just noticed that the couple we met who were staying in the North Beach cottage posted a review on TripAdvisor. If you're considering such an option (it would be amazing for a honeymoon or other special occasion) you may want to check out their review also. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...n_Islands.html

Hi disneygal & syrene. We spent our 10 year wedding anniversary on Young Island. It was lovely. The food was excellent. Each "casita" or stand alone unit was different. Some were high up a hill while others were lower to the beach. The property has tennis courts. We did the sail/stay package so spent 5 nights on YI and then sailed on their boat to Bequia and Mustique. GREAT EXPERIENCE.
  12. Syrene-1's Avatar
Yes, we were there a couple years ago and I really loved it - which is funny because I'm not a "beach person" and I don't really like to socialize on vacation. But something about this place changed me completely. We made so many friends there but yet felt free to have our "couple time" too.
I know what you mean about the "laid back atmosphere - we felt like the whole island was ours to do with whatever we wanted. There was no one to tell us that anything was off limits.
Your description of Guana sounds like you could have been describing Young Island. I'm adding it to my ever growing list now.

Thanks Syrene-1 for the info. on Young Island. It sounds wonderful, and I will keep it in mind for a future trip!

    Hi disneygal,
Thanks for this wonderful and informative post. I enjoyed reading about your experience at Guana Island, especially since one of the Nature channels on TV just recently did a full documentation on Guana and Necker Islands. Seemed like a wonderful and layed back place. From what I remember from the TV show, the owner of Guana island just purchased Norman's Island and is trying to turn this island and the caves into a more exclusive and upscale vacation spot.

    Hi disneygal

Guana sounds like a wonderfully laid-back island paradise. Did you use an LL auction or the "Buy Now" feature to get your 5-day vacation? A bit of an odd name for the island. Any idea how it got its name?

    Curt
  16. disneygal's Avatar
Hi lhb, Yes Norman Island is also owned by the Jarecki family. April, the former bar manager at Norman Island, is now at Guana to make sure you have a wonderful time. Now, if we could just organize that LL trip to Necker Island... :-)
  17. disneygal's Avatar
Hi curtiejoe, The name Guana comes from the shape of the island that is reminiscent of an Iguana. There is a rock outcropping that looks like an Iguana's head, with the hill behind as the body. I was lucky enough to get an LL auction package. That particular auction was a "best shot".
