We decided to arrive in Austin, the day before the Luxury Link Social Experience, just to get a taste.....how can you not be intrigued by a city whose unofficial motto is: Help Keep Austin Weird?

Due to severe weather in South Florida, we got a late start and late arrival. By the time we picked up a rental car and drove into town, we arrived at the W Austin Hotel around midnight. Considered going directly to our room and crashing, but the vibes emanating <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1685&d=1368396821" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

Some two hours later, we extricated our tired bodies from the pulsating throng and headed up to the 11th floor. We had reserved a Spectacular Room and it was exactly that...and maybe a little more - almost 400 square feet, outfitted and 'wired' for the ultimate "geekdom" experience.

Even at 2:00 am, it's hard to pass up dipping tired fingers into the assorted welcome amenities (savory nuts, multi-colored M&Ms and those absurdly decedent TWIX- PBs®).

We crashed and slept - soundly!

A few hours later we arose, placed an 'emergency' caffeine call to Anything/Anytime Service and spoke to Marian! It's on the way - Bodum fresh French pressed coffee right before our eyes - lite breakfast and we're out to explore.

After a quick stop to pick up a couple of clothing items, we inquired where the best Mani-Pedi place was in town. "Go to Great Nails & Spa" was the persistent response and we did....first time in a BYOB for us!

Stopped for some food truck snacks before heading back into town for a late lunch at a real sit-down restaurant.

Brian Bastress (major domo at Travaasa Austin) had provided us a select list from which to pick:
- Barley Swine
- Bess Bistro<img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1686&d=1368396846" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

- Braise
- Congress
- Jaspers
- Swifts Attic
- Uchi and Uchiko
- Peche
- Wink
- La Condesa
- Threadgille

We headed to La Condesa for some contemporary Mexican cuisine. Guacamole with pomegranate, pomegranate molasses, queso fresco and of course a couple of Margarita La Condesa - outstanding!

A little more time for 'walking about' downtown to allow lunch to settle, then the 45 minute drive through suburban sprawl to Travaasa. What a lovely mountain-top hidden retreat.

My first glimpse of the Travaasa website gave me the wrong impression - maybe a nice place for girlfriends to escape for a spa 'catch up' weekend, but probably not a place for <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1692&d=1368476061" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
Sommelier Edward Morgan curates an impressive wine list.....and is increasing selections from Chile and Argentina - thanks for stocking Torrontés, the emblematic white wine of Argentina and one of our favorites. The wine list leans toward organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines, many of which are made by local boutique producers. The extensive offering of beers features many local craft brewers and imported organics as well.

Chef Benjamin Baker demonstrated his awareness that vegetarians and vegan are proliferating his guest lists. With a tenderly hand groomed garden on property, the daily produce and herbs are truly farm to table. Chef produced a peach and avocado salad <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1689&d=1368397095" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

The grilled cotija cheese on crisp slabs of watermelon hors d' oeuvre, served one evening, enticed us to a second and third helping. His take on vegetarian stuffed zucchini blossoms and chile poblano stuffed with quinoa rivaled any other entree on the menu.

So how to describe Austin in general and Travaasa Austin specifically?

Austin is 'weird" in a wonderful and engaging way.

Travaasa Austin is part:

- New age Zen experiences
- Luxury spa offering luxuriant treatments<img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1690&d=1368397115" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

- Hiking with nature
- Challenge course
- Equine experience
- Trail rides
and so much more......most of all, it is a wonderful place to come to terms with yourself.

ID:	1409" class="align_right size_thumbnail" />, as well as fit in some rest and relaxation time. Highest priority was a day trip over to Guatemala and spend as much time as possible exploring the partially excavated ruins of Tikal.

So, we selected Ka'ana Boutique Resort near San Ignacio as our base, providing excellent proximity to Guatemala and to a number of nearby Mayan ruins and 'active' excursion possibilities. After some research, we settled on K'atun Ahaw Tours to provide our day visit to Tikal. Taking a group tour would be out of the question.

We exchanged several emails with Elias Cambranes, owner/operator of the company to determine if he could arrange or conduct a private tour (maybe tour is not 100% accurate, since we had a laundry list we wanted to accomplish during the day long trip). Given the 6 square mile size of Tikal, seeing everything is impossible, so some advance strategy played a key element to the experience.

Elias confirmed that he would provide transportation on both sides of the border and conduct the private tour. We did not want to be 'handed off' to another guide once we arrived at the National Park. Elias even adjusted his normal start time, so we could get the border crossing completed and the 50 mile drive to Tikal ahead of most of the morning tour groups.

What about lunch, we're 'vegetarians' and we don't want to just eat 'pollo de goma' in tour restaurants?

"No problems," assured Elias "we can shop for some fresh produce from a Mayan farmer I know, who operates a roadside stand on the main highway. Just select what looks good to you. There's a small family run restaurant outside the entrance to Tikal and they will prepare what we bring and other items typical to the indigenous diet."

We caught a huge break with the weather and general conditions....high overcast (no oppressive sun), only a few sprinkles (heavy showers are not infrequent) and almost no insects (at least those that like to bite).

Wildlife was abundant...a couple of large troupes of howler <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1411&d=1361836940" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

(btw...that Elias and he is only 'coaxing' the animals to pose for a photo - no food was involved).

Elias proved to be the right guide for us. Well worth the few extra dollars difference from most group tours.

One lazy morning, we drove out to Barton Creek Cave, which proved to be more interesting than expected....a canoe trip into one of the longest (an darkest) subterranean systems in Belize...lots of stalagmites, stalactites, and Mayan artifacts (we didn't spend a lot of time surveying the skeletal remains). Fortunately, there were only a couple of other canoes exploring the cave, so there we enjoyed peace and quiet.....and even a chill or two thinking about what may have happened here years ago.

Xunantunich is nearby Ka'ana and can actually be reached by public bus, a brief hand cranked ferry ride and a comfortable hike to the enormous center core of the site. No need to pay for a formal tour, as there are plenty of 'day guides' willing to offer their services for a nominal and negotiable fee.

One afternoon we drove out to Chaa Creek for a quick walk around (fabulous cottages <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1413&d=1361837042" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

Of course, we got a little too adventurous at one of the rapids and managed to overturn our vessel....nothing damaged or lost...and it proved to be good exercise righting the craft and reloading our gear while standing in waist deep rushing water!

We did procrastinate on completing some excursions such as Cahal Pech and Caracol, which are said to be quite lovely and within easy driving distance of San Ignacio. We thought it better to save some sites for our next visit to Belize, which we hope to schedule in the not too distant future.

We decided to give a go!

Here are some observations:

● The rooms and suites air conditioned, while most (if any) other resorts in western Belize are not (OK, we could be more sensitive to the environment and deal with open screened windows plus the associated high humidity...but, we wanted air conditioning).

● We planned several active excursions, which would undoubtedly result in extensive perspiration, over exposure to sun and likely some annoying insects (wait, was this a holiday or an endurance test)... so we would be looking for 'comfort' each evening.

● We wanted spacious bathrooms and showers with an adequate supply of hot water (no wimpy tepid dribbles would satisfy).

● We expected indulgent bedding with high count linens.

● A swimming pool would always be a plus - even it the water isn't heated.

● A comfortable spa set up (not just a room with SPA on the door) for a couples massage would add some luxury.

● A comfortable and inviting bar/lounge environment for a cocktail or two, plus an innovative wine list is a plus.

● A favorable staff to guest ratio tends to accommodate guest services (staff member who remember your names and address you as such, is appreciated).

● How about a fresh homemade 'sweet treat' from the chef delivered bedside to end the evening (no mints on the pillows, please).
<img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1386&d=1360892941" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

Turns out we picked the right property.

The location was perfect; right outside of San Ignacio, on the paved highway into Guatemala....making simply work out of our day trip to Tikal. Additionally, the property location allowed easy and quick access to a variety of other interesting excursions. It was simple to catch a local bus (less than $1 USD) into San Ignacio for some walking exploration of the small town....if interested.

Most reviews of Ka'ana reflected good to excellent food at La Ceiba, their hotel restaurant....although some did complain about the higher costs. We sampled and enjoyed a variety of small plates/tapas at the bar and had a delightful farewell dining experience on their fire deck (this is quite special).

We didn't feel the costs were out of line with those typical of an exclusive resort.

Chef Armando and his staff offered flexibility in menu items (of interest, since we're <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1390&d=1360893239" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

vegetarians.....he has fresh vegetables at his finger tips, as Ka'ana grows and harvests produce from their own organic garden.).We quickly adjusted to a traditional hearty "Dukunu" breakfast every morning.... Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce helped to spice up the frejoles! Glad we did, as the extra fortification came in handy during several of our adventures. We also developed a fondness for their expertly prepared and extremely nutritious Chaya.

Obviously Ronan and Colin Hannan, co-owners, had a distinct vision when they embarked on the development of Ka'ana. Their meticulous attention to design elements reflect modern aesthetics but retain traditional Belizean touches (extensive use of great native woods and eclectic art is pervasive). Their interest in offering guests unique cocktails and fine wines and making certain evenings take on a special ambience (creative use of candles and subdued lighting along the walking paths), reflect their imprint here and probably at future projects planned for the country.

Their passion, if not openly stated, is strongly implied at every turn:

● Ka'ana is a place for special guests to enjoy exceptional and memorable experiences!

While searching their web site for possible excursion ideas, we noticed the resort is a participant in Pack For A Purpose. We exchanged several emails and spoke with the resort's reservations manager Patricia Rodriguez regarding their project school. We asked her to contact the school directly in order to narrow down the list of most needed or desired items rather than duplicating items other might have brought in the past.

As we have done a fair bit of travel in Central American over the years, we are generally aware of the many needs of the indigenous people, especially schools in smaller communities. As such, we have a long standing tradition of taking along extra items clothing, hygiene products and books), when we are able to locate a recipient source of interest.

Thanks to the efforts of Patricia, Mr. Vivanni Teul, the principal of the Succotz Primary School in the village of San Jose Succotz, provided us with some priority items we might consider packing.

Our duffle bag was loaded with tooth brushes, tooth paste (the school has an ongoing basic health initiative for the younger children), band aids, antibacterial ointment (kids do get bumps and scratches), English language books, flash cards, crayons, drawing paper, assorted sizes of tee shirts and a few small toys to fill out the load.

Upon arriving and wishing not to be too disruptive to their normal <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1346&d=1359757396" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

More than 300 children attend classes in the modest but improving facility. It is impressive to see the achievements by Mr. Teul and his small teaching staff have brought to the community. The students we met were friendly, courteous and inquisitive about the U.S.

In reflecting back on the minimal time, efforts and costs associated with assembling the items we carried along; the smiles, laughter and wide-eyed anticipation of the children will linger as a pleasant and unexpected reward for some time.

We were definitely the greatest beneficiaries of the endeavor and would encourage other travelers to consider participating whenever possible!

Returning for a two night stay, a year later, we noticed some changes with members of the management team, but the property remains an affiliation with Benchmark Hospitality. We felt the property continues to improve the overall guest experience.

As was the case last year, we requested and received an oceanfront cabana suite (#112).....our choice, since we prefer direct access to a ground level covered patio as opposed to the terraces offered on the upper floors. The ground floor also offers direct access to beach front walks and easy access for dips in their heated swimming pool and delightful spa.

In our opinion, the outdoor private lounge furniture for the patio is unusable, as it is non-adjustable and for the most part, simply uncomfortable to use....maybe these items will be replaced with more functional pieces in the near future.

Executive Chef Antonio Estremera, and his accomplished kitchen staff, represent a quantum leap upward in food quality at the property. Not unusual in the world of emerging culinary artists, Chef Antonio is bringing fusion magic, to The Wave Kitchen. Vero Beach restaurants in general are infamous for offering uninspired dining opportunities ("how do you like your fried fish - fried?"). Chef Antonio boldly inspires adventure with spices and flavors from his native Peru and beyond and as a result, attracts both locals and travelers to experience dining explorations.

The sleeping accommodations remain restfully calm and minimalist rather than opulent and uncomfortable (as can be the case with at least one other beach front hotel in the area). Generous use of wood for interior wall accents and contrasting stone floors create a pleasing palette of natural colors (OK, the stone floors can be chilly, if you need to make a night call to the WC, but bring along your bed slippers, if this might be a problem).

The plush bedding and organic cotton sheets are both inviting and soothing....all but insuring a comfortable and relaxing night of sleep (the soothing melodic sound of the Atlantic suft is sure to please).

Other reviews have complained about the size and layout of the ensure bathrooms. We, on the other hand, find the bath setup to be efficient and functional as we prefer full shower stalls instead of tubs or shower/tub combos. The single vanity and counter space seems more than adequate for the use or one or two travelers.

For whatever the reasons, in room coffee service has replaced the complementary lobby service previously offered. Our own choice, at a small resort such as http://www.luxurylink.com/fivestar/h...e-beach-resort, would be to offer both options.....the open layout of the common areas invite early more wanderings and a second or even third cup of coffee can be a warm companion when an onshore breeze is blowing on to the swim deck. Picky? Maybe, but it's our preference.

Costa d'Este Beach Resort is compact, uncomplicated and provides a pleasant choice to relax and recharge directly on Vero Beach. There are several other area hotel choices in the approximate price range, but none seems to offer the same flare.

Our staff encounters, throughout our brief stay proved to be warm, helpful and anticipatory, of all out needs and interests. We appreciated the attentiveness demonstrated by Pam and Amanda at the front desk. Lewis, in the dining room, was especially considerate in providing extra attention to a 'senior' member of our luncheon experience on the day of our arrival.

We'll return next year around the same time in hopes of an even higher level of service and progress in all areas.

b.t.w. If a restaurant is offering champagne by the glass, it is the responsibility of the Food & Beverage Manager to set in place a policy not to permit a day old bottle to be used (give it to the kitchen, pour it out or take it home at the end of the night), but don't try to serve it to your guests and then charge full price.

For our annual pilgrimage to observe the EPCOT Candlelight Processional, we decided to spend a couple of nights at the Bohemian Hotel Celebration http://www.luxurylink.com/fivestar/h...el-celebration. With only 115 guest rooms and suites, the property is comfortable and pleasantly contrary to most Orlando area mega hotel complexes.

We booked our Luxury Link package on-line with our favorite LL Concierge and followed up a call to Maricarmen, Group Reservation Manager at the property to inform her of our Lifetime Platinum status with in the Marriott Rewards Program. She promptly responded and confirmed our space for the requested dates.

Turning off of U. S. Highway 192 in Kissimmee you enter the Disney-esque perfection of Celebration, Florida - everything is perfect - not a blade of grass out of place or a chip of paint missing within site. Neatly decorated homes, bedecked in holiday splendor and clearly marked 'electric car parking only' signs for the favored vehicle of residents.

The Bohemian Hotel is compactly constructed on a corner site overlooking a small lake, across from a nature preserve and only a few steps from the commercial district of Celebration. Parking is available on the adjacent streets, in a public parking lot or by simply dropping your vehicle with a valet at the front entrance.

Given the season, the lobby was tastily decorated with a Christmas tree and assorted holiday decorations.

The lobby is actually a combination casual reception area, a common seating/dining area and a small but well stocked bar area. There are wide doors leading to an outside covered seating and dining area as well as an open terrace adjacent to the lake. A small swimming pool, sun terrace and a Jacuzzi spa are also available to guests.

Since we arrived a couple hours prior to normal check-in, Pia, the host/receptionist asked if we would mind waiting a few minutes while our accommodations were being touched up by housekeeping. We decided to stroll down the street, see about getting a bite to eat rather than wait around the hotel and enjoying the holiday decorations. Pia took our cellular number and said she would call us the moment housekeeping had finished.

The Celebration Town Center is actually only a few steps from the hotel lobby entrance and has a variety of restaurants, casual dining spots and a even an active Irish Pub and a Starbucks. We had just found a dining spot to our liking and was reviewing the menu, when the phone rang and Pia informed us we were cleared to check in our 'suite' (first time we had heard that term in connection with our reservation).

Turns out that Luxury Link travelers and Platinum status might have been a help, since our suite (number 226) was enormous and had functional French doors, opening on to a small balcony with full balustrade. The motif was clearly an interpretation of 'Old Florida meets Tommy Bahama' - complete with a king size four poster bed - firm and comfortable!

Size: 889.9 KB" style="float: CONFIG" />

Our package included a $50 breakfast credit each morning. We decided to take our meals on the outside covered terrace and enjoy the fresh air. Our server both mornings was George. We quickly discovered he was Cusco, Peru and had worked at the Orient-Express Hotel Monasterio, after graduating hotel management. We enjoyed sharing stories about Cusco and the Monasterio (having visited the city and stayed at the hotel, using Luxury Link packages, several times).

We ftotally enjoyed our time at this property. Each member of the staff, with whom we had interactions, executed their responsibilities professionally and cheerfully, adding to the holiday spirit.

We would certainly consider revisiting Bohemian Hotel Celebration, whenever returning to the Orlando area, and would highly recommend it to friends and associates.

During previous trips to Europe and Africa, we have flown over these archipelagos, but had never visited. Being remote and so topographically different from our day-to-day surroundings, we were curious to explore and learn more. We considered an auction package for the Orient-Express Reid's Palace in Funchal, Madeira.

Some on-line reviews characterized Funchal as a frequent destinations for older sun starved British travelers escaping the rains and cooler temperatures of their homelands. Other comments included "nice port city for day long cruise stop."

So, we wondered if the destination and the property really be a good fit for us. A historic hotel dating back to the late 1800s, primarily built for upper-class travelers, <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1131&d=1352942464" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
After scrutinizing the Reid's Palace web site and reviewing a list of activities scheduled for the time frame we would be visiting, the property was sounding uncertain as a fit for our travel style:

Dancing Lessons in the Salon 28, prior to “Reid’s Dinner Dance” in the “Dining Room”

QI GONG (or CHI KUNG) The art of longevity

RIDE BY CLASSIC CAR (Morris Cowley from 1930)

Reid's Easy Levada Walk

Jazzy Evening music with “Swing Feel Band”

There was a list of suggested 'dress codes' for restaurants and guest interactions. I would not pack a tuxedo or even a business suit for this trip. After all, this was my holiday and I didn't want to spend leisure time dressed in formal wear or a business suit.

I was just about to write off Reid's Palace when I discovered they had a very active presence on social media (Facebook and Twitter). I ventured out to exchange 'tweets' to probe for clarifications and information:

Q: What is the temperature of UR lap pool - how late does the spa stay open?

Q: Can I we attend Afternoon Tea, without wearing a jacket?

Q: Does 'smart casual' wear translate 2 a suit or jacket?

Q: Must I wear a tux or business suit 2 the Dinner Dance?

Q: Can U arrange interesting/adventure excursions, as we R not constant pool dwellers!

Q: How late does UR dance club remain open? Reid's Palace was beginning to kindle our interests.....a visit could be a serious upgrade to our casual travel style and expose us to a wealth of classic sophisticated European culture.

So we hit the buy button and decided to indulge in what Reid's Palace unabashedly calls the 'art of pampering?'

At the stately front door of Reid's Palace, we were greeted by name and accompanied to the front desk, where we were met by Ulisses Marreiros, General Manager (attired in a smartly tailored suit). He extended his hand in welcome. "It is a pleasure to have you join us here at Reid's Palace. If you have any questions during your stay, please don't hesitate to ask any of the staff or you may 'tweet' me." He smiled, confidently and removed a smart phone from his inside coat pocket. He then scrolled through the numerous Twitter exchanges we had shared during the prior months.

"We are a historic institution here on Madeira and we very proud to carry on our traditions for our clientele," said Ulisses "but, we also acknowledge the presence and evolution of technology and I wanted you to know you can reach me when necessary."
The following five days were remarkable. To our knowledge, we were the only two Americans in residence. On the day of our arrival, Adler, the hotel music conductor and pianist was playing in the reception area adjacent to the Tea Terrace. Turning to the pianist, I asked if he could play 'My He
Funcal proved to be a very walk worthy and safe city (especially http://www.madeira-web.com/camera/cam-01.html). We skipped going into town on the days cruise ships were in port to avoid the crowds. Late afternoon and evenings seemed the best time for explorations, admiring the restored houses with strolling the old cobbled streets. Both the waterfront and Old Town afforded a variety of restaurants, many of which were reasonably priced and offered alfresco dining and great people watching.
Unfortunately, there are a lack of superlatives to adequately describe the guest experience at the Orient-Express Reid's Palace....there is an abundance of traditional Madeiran hospitality, accentuated and infused with British poise.....a perfect place for Two 'Yanks" to spend a holiday.

We sometimes use a rental vehicle abroad but we feel we are missing more than we are seeing. We have come to grips with our lack of fluency in most languages other than English (OK, we get by in Spanish).

We've had much better success dealing with independent personal guides. They will transport us when and where we want to go and share tips usually on known to locals. Finding a compatible individual is the second goal we pursue, after selecting a new destination.

Not being in need of a 'nanny' to babysit us, we are looking for someone who has:

An interesting background

Suggestions (not standard guide book rhetoric) about their city or region

Above all, knowledge and good communication skills

We have discovered these individuals actually exist and often their services are not overly expensive. We have located compatible matches in Central and South America and in many Western European countries as well as in East and North Africa.

Simply stated, we try to find a 'shepherd' who can keep us pointed in the right direction and keep us out of trouble, if and when we wander.

Recently, before heading to Portugal, we started looking for someone to help us explore the city of Porto, visit smaller villages in the northern part of the country and assist us in learning more about local food and wines. As the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the Douro Valley has been on our 'to do' list for sometime. We have a preference for table wines, especially those not common to our local wine merchant or grocer; so this visit would become a journey of discovery and different tastings for palates.

ID:	1069" class="align_left size_thumbnail" />After researching a number of guides and transportation services, we connected with Miguel Ribeiro, who specializes in, but does not limit his service to cruise ship shore tours. Miguel was born in Porto and spent his early years there. However, most of the past 15 years, he held one of the top positions of responsibility in restaurant management with one of the top luxury cruise ship companies in the world. Additionally, his own personal travels have taken him around the globe, and his knowledge and experience in food service and background with wines is impressive. Lastly, he has intimate knowledge of the Douro Valley and could help us better understand and appreciate Port, the iconic fortified wine of the country, as well as the emerging excellent table wines being produced in the area.

We decided Miguel could be a very good fit for us so we submitted our previously scheduled appointments and 'wish list' as well as proposed travel dates. We asked him to review our schedule and fill in the blanks (we had purposely left open days in hopes of unplanned happenings).

He responded with a detailed proposal and an extensive list of ideas for our consideration.

For example:

We were holding Luxury Link reservations at Casa da Calcada in Amarante. We didn't even know the boat or excursion existed

He suggested a private tour and wine tasting at Palacio da Brejoeira on a day when it was closed to the public

He set up a personal luncheon and wine tasting at Quinta do Portal

He orchestrated gastronomic experiences from the simplicity of The Casa de Pasto Canastra Azul and Taberninha do Manel to the sumptuous offerings at The Yeatman and the extraordinary DOP Restaurant owned and operated by Portugal's renown Rui Paula.

Miguel was punctual with our transportation. He displayed endless patience in answering <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1070&d=1350925745" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
On our last evening in Porto, Miguel and his lovely wife Jennifer prepared and served a delightful 'going away' dinner in our honor at their own home.

A personal guide such as Miguel is not necessarily an expensive luxury, but rather a bargain, when all of the extras and unexpected interactions are considered. Most of all, for us, he became a direct conduit to the heart and soul of Portugal and so many of her wonderful people.

Muito obrigado!

When the opportunity popped up to use some frequent flier miles and secure business class seats on TAP Portugal Airlines, we jumped into action. Never having flown with TAP, we did some quick research for on-line reviews of their service. Not surprising, reviews were all over the place from 'really bad' to <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1035&d=1349459449" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
TAP would be using one of their A330-200s and the forward cabin would be outfitted with Recaro reclining seats (not 180° as in a true flat bed, but a comfortable 172°). A common complaint about 'slant seats' is the problem of constantly sliding 'down hill' while trying to sleep. Didn't seem like a big issue, since we often get similar 'slants' in business class on American Airlines B-767 flights to South America.

On departure day, we arrived MIA in time to clear TSA (soft hands make for smiles) and spend about half an hour in Club America on Concourse J, (Club America provides <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=1036&d=1349476838" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

Checking www.FlightAware.com on our iPad, we noticed the departure time for TP112 had been delayed 30 minutes. So we took a few extra minutes for the walk to Concourse H, passing up opportunities to shop at several duty free stores.

Pre-boarding was being announced as we arrived at H-8 and we got our first glimpse at the plane that would be our B&B for the next 8 + hours. Pretty impressive piece of equipment. You think you are doing something good, but your handouts are contributing to a culture of begging and dependency," added Francisco, "There are agencies in our country working for improvements."

The following afternoon, we were invited to visit Francisco's extended family who are Uros Indians. They live in a self sustaining small community on a “floating reed island" in Lake Titicaca. Their island is private and not open to daily visits from the tourism boats out of Puno. This would prove to be a special afternoon for us.
"What about a gift," we responded, "we sometimes take 'gifts' when we are invited to the homes of others back in the US."

I'm intrigued by the evolution of pre-flight boarding processes at different airports in different countries over the past few year. I have long ago set aside my predispositions for a fast efficient procedure and acquiesced to local customs, traditions and bureaucracies.

I no longer stress over the follies involved in boarding a domestic flight within the U.S. I don't always avail myself of the priorities associated with upgraded class of service, frequent flier standing or credit card perks (well, that's not totally accurate....if I'm flying BIZ or FIRST on a quality carrier, I may jump in the tussle and hope for a sip of quality champagne before or shortly after departure).

I now carry on only a single item which will fit safely in the limited foot space provided and avoid the overhead bin space disputes, which seem to erupt among passengers regularly and require the flight attendants to referee (maybe black & while stripe are needed for these employees).

I still think about the pre-flight boarding process when we flew out of the Amazon in Ecuador. It had rained hard the evening before our scheduled departure and there was a question as to whether the scheduled flight would even attempt a landing.

The morning did bring a break in the rains (hey, we were in rain forest and it did live up to the title).....we had a light mist falling but nothing too serious. We loaded our limited gear into the dug out canoe and headed up river from the village. The pilot had radioed he would be arriving at the airfield (make that dirt/mud strip hacked out of heavy tropical foliage), do a fly-by and decide if he would attempt to land.

<img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=805&d=1341954969" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

We proceeded to a four posted thatched roof structure along side the airfield for 'weigh-in' (Yep, bathroom scales wrapped in a huge plastic bag to minimize moisture infiltration). The was a mild protestation from one of the ladies regarding her willingness to be weighed, but our guide summed up the situation simply: If you don't stand on these scales, then you will not be flying out today.

The pilot wasted no time discussing weight and balance limits for the airplane nor did he feel the need to share his evaluation for the proper ratio of fuel, oil and total payload for our flight. He instead told each of the passengers where to sit and instructed the guide and assistance which pieces of luggage were to be loaded in the exact position in the baggage compartment.

The pilot said "put on your (David Clark) headsets, fasten your seats belts, pull them tight and don't remove them until I tell you otherwise. We're going to attempt and get airborne before the next wave of showers blow through and muddy up the place."

Wow!

High pucker factor as the plane roared down the field and finally sucked those tires out of the mud!

All of these are reasons to stay or visit here, but I am drawn to the more relaxed pace, the architecture, the tree lined avenues, the parks and of course a visit to the Recoleta Cemetery – where Evita is entombed in the Duarte Crypt.

Mornings at La Biela can be excellent for people watching as well <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=724&d=1339532353" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
After our coffee, we stroll beneath the famous old rubber tree and head to the cemetery entrance.

We buy a map showing notable crypt locations and queue up for the "free" guided tour in <img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=725&d=1339532388" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
The cemetery is 'alive' with cats, that have enjoyed dedicated 'feeders' for years. The felines have adapted well to their lives of leisure in this environment. It is bit ironic to see on going lively animal activities in this historic and architecturally impressive environment for the dead.... Cementerio de Gatos!
Just one of many interesting walks in Buenos Aires and well worth the hour or so to do it.
<img src="http://www.luxurylink.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=723&d=1339532467" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

"We're guests here for the next three nights," I said "and we will likely need some suggestions. Can we depend on you for some interesting ideas?"
"Of course," responded the Concierge.

"Sounds good," I said "how about a couple of ideas for later this afternoon"

"Do you take afternoon tea?" inquired the Concierge.

"You mean 'tea' as in little sandwiches, fancy pastries, etc., etc., etc.?" I asked.

"Precisely," responded the Concierge "traditional tea in a formal setting."

"Here?" I asked.

"No sir," replied the Concierge, "at one of the oldest hotels in the city and it's just a short walk from here."

"I didn't pack a business jacket" I noted "plus taking tea sounds a bit stuffy."

"Think 'entertaining' not stuffy," responded the Concierge. "I can arrange a table; no jacket required."

*               *               *

Totally entertaining:

silver place settings and tea service

three tiered silver serving towers with pastries

a toadying staff of white gloved attendants

distinguished matrons and younger Porteños stylishly attired

classical music played by a harpist

a most decadent architectural environment

The tea was excellent and of course, I did over indulge on the empanadas heavily lathered with dulce de leche!
