Meson Sacristia De Capuchinas: "Taste of Old Mexico"We totally enjoyed our six night LuxuryLink vacation and cooking class package at Meson Sacristia de Capuchinas.

in Puebla, Mexico
http://mexicoboutiquehotels.com/capuchinas/ Beware, this is not a package for those seeking indulgent luxury at a 5 Star beach side resort! There are no beaches...no oceans.no tall glass and steel tourist infested chain hotelsjust a lovely old Spanish Colonial Mexican city situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by volcanic mountains and mostly
clear blue skies.

The luxury in this holiday package comes from the opportunities to experience the art, the history, the local people and the real tastes of Colonial Mexico!

The owners of Meson Sacristies de Capuchins have taken meticulous care in restoring this 350 year old private residence (now offering six suites), tastefully furnished and appointed with antiques (many of which are discretely marked available for purchase).

Note: There is no central A/C system.only small mobile (and not terribly effective) air conditioning unitsso choose your travel seasons wisely by checking ahead for the general weather at the time you wish to travel summer can be quite warm humid

and will likely overtax the capabilities of the small A/C units!

We were comfortable with temperatures during our entire stay.
One other point, request (strongly if necessary) one of the suites on the second floor and to the rear.if you desire quietness..the city wakes up early and the front suites face a heavily trafficked street.

When the massive antique exterior doors to the street are closed, you are warmly and genuinely welcomed into a pampered world of indulgences. The staff takes great effort to anticipate and accommodate your needs and desires, without being overly intrusive.

In other words, if you want something and you don't see it, do not hesitate to request it (if you want an English language newspaper to peruse with your breakfast..tell them and they will track down one of the ten or so English editions delivered daily to a local news stand.

For five mornings, the Executive Chef, Alonso, artfully instructed us in multi course cooking classes (we took great care in our food preparation, since the dishes we prepared were served to as lunch each day). As we are vegetarians, Chef Alonso, restructured his normal menus and included only dishes we could cook and eat! He will certainly want to share at least one of his recipes for a traditional and spicy mole.

Mariana, another staff member, was always on hand to handle all of the English translation, just to ensure we understood the written instructions and cooked everything correctly.

Alonso actually is conversant in English, but he takes great care to make certain his students understand each step in the food preparation. Victor was our waiter and trusty
bar man and frequently demonstrated his creativity and magic touches with tequila.

One morning, Chef Alonso and Mariana escorted us to the central market to experience shopping for fresh produce and chiles.

We were introduced to his favorite organic farmers and were assisted in selecting only the freshest of ingredients for our cooking classes. He emphasized the importance of starting with fresh ingredients; if the final dish was to achieve perfection!

Puebla exudes
Colonial history and art treasures. The historic district of the city is a treasure of lovely restored buildings and offers numerous opportunities for explorative daily walks. One afternoon we were treated to a walking tour of the central historic district, conducted by Carlos Riveros [an excellent English speaking guide available through the hotel or sinply by visiting his web site
http://www.riveros.com.mx/Portal/Default.aspx].

We found the time with Carlos to be extremely informative and worth the few extra pesos to modify the standard tours to our liking. Our Luxury Link package included admission to the Mueso Amparo..a recently renovated historic building which houses
an impressive private pre-Columbian exhibition.

There are many private art museums in the city and private showing can be arranged by the front desk staff upon request.

If you have time and you enjoy handmade pottery, try and schedule a visit to at least one of the Talavera Artist Centers http://www.inside-mexico.com/art1.htm
most of which are located outside the main city.

It is a interesting and informative opportunity to meet the actual artists and observe their techniques and styles.

The traditional pottery is beautiful, unique to the region and makes an excellent and useful remembrance to bring back home.

Evenings are relaxing and pleasant and can be spent sitting outside at various cafes surrounding the main square or simply exploring the art studios and interesting located in the back streets safety never seemed to be a concern during our visit.

If you are fortunate to visit Puebla, make the effort to stay several nights at Meson Sacristia de Capuchinas
and their sister property, Sacristia de la Compania. The food is authentic and service is delightful.

We hated to leave our new "amigos" but look forward to an extended return visit in the near future.

P.S..dont be frightened of an uninvited attack of the turistas....the hygiene and food preparation procedures are likely more sanitary then in many restaurants back in the US.

omegaet, thank you for taking the time to assemble this detailed and informative posting. I may very well consider bidding on this destination.

    Hi omegaet

I really enjoyed your very thorough and informative blog on the Sacristia de Capuchines in Puebla, Mexico. Not only is your post enjoyable to read but it also provides lots of useful tips, insights, weblinks and colourful photos on one of LL's properties. This sort of extensive and personal feed-back is invaluable to anyone interested in travelling to this relatively-unknown and off-the-beaten-path destination in Mexico. It is also the epitomy of what the LL Community is all about: sharing personal travel experiences with other travellers. Thanks!

Hi Omeat, thanks so much for your detailed and well-written post. With the exchange rate as it is today, I've often wondered about this package and thought that it seemed to offer tremendous value for the money. One question..Do you think this vacation would be well-suited for a sisters' getaway, or would you consider it better for going with my husband?

kkbutler79...if a little "adventure" and an interest in Mexican cooking
exists, it really doesn't matter whether you attend with your sister, a girlfriend or you husband....this
    can be
a fun experience and well worth the auction price (of course, if you can buy it close to to minimum asking price, it is even a
better deal). The owners of the properties and the staff are wonderful people and willing to
take extra time and effort to share their history!
We had a fabulous time (the summer might not be the best time to visit, just because the portable A/C may not get the job done)
    We
found the historic and artistic aspects of Puebla especially captivating.

Thank you for your very informative and detailed description of this package. I saw the package listed on Luxury Link for the first time yesterday and was very intrigued. My wife and I do a lot of international cooking and this would be right up our alley. In fact, I mentioned this trip to her last night, prior to seeing your posting. It's refreshing to hear that the classes accommodate vegetarians. My wife and I eat seafood and some poultry, but some cooking classes do not accommodate our dietary restrictions. We are not into taking trips where we are surrounded by other tourists and really enjoy an authentic experience when we travel abroad. The inn looks very much La Casa de Suena, where we stayed in Tlaquepaque (outside of Guadalajara) last March.

Did you stay for three nights at each of the two properties? That's the package that is currently listed. Also, did you have an easy time finding nights available when you wanted to go? Was there anything (other than the lack of AC) that you didn't like about the accommodations? Are the cooking classes geared towards beginniners or do they assume that students have a basic knowledge of cooking? How many students are in each class? What's the nearest city to fly into to get to Puebla? Muchas gracias, amigo, and congratulations in winning the Best Travel Story Contest!

thepiranha....we opted to spend all six nights at the Meson Sacristia De Capuchinas rather than split our stay at the Meson Sacristia De La Compania (smaller rooms and the site of their public restaurant), which we visited a couple of times to investigate and have a meal.

Capuchinas, in our opinion, offers more luxury and seclusion. The dining room at Capuchinas only severs meals to guests rather than being open to the public.

Only one other couple was in residence, taking the cooking course, during our stay.actually they were finishing their course and we only encountered them one day in the kitchen. Otherwise, we basically had private cooking classes. Remember, there are only eight accommodations at Capuchinas, so being surrounded by other tourists is unlikely.....at least not many of them.

The chef does have a normal class routine for his recipes and cooking demonstrations. However, as we mentioned, being vegetarians, we exchanged emails and asked if they could accommodate our needsno problems. If you are considering this package, perhaps you should exchange an email or two and alert them to your likes and dislikes. The Central Mercado is within walking distance of Capuchinas, so fresh food supplies are purchased daily.you can have personal input into their shopping trips and can go along with them, if you like.

As for your evenings, they are totally unencumbered, so you can do whatever interests you..being located in the historic district of Pubela, you have many options which can easily be reached on foot.

We had not difficulty in securing our requested dates (remember, we communicated with the staff before we placed our winning LL bid). Actually, we did not have a problem with the A/C.the portable unit was adequate for our needs.we mentioned the A/C as a point of information to others who may prefer central A/C.

We experienced NO PROBLEMS with the staff nor the facilities. One more point of information, if you are a light sleeper, you might want to ensure you have a second floor suite located at the rear of the building. The suites facing the main street are very nice, however, the city wakes up early and traffic noise might become an issue.

We did hear one fellow guest complain a couple of times about the early morning noise and sleep interruptions.we bought him a couple of margaritas during Happy Hour that afternoon and offered him an Ambien for later in the evening. He and his wife seemed pleased when we saw them at breakfast the following morning.

The staff assumes nothing in terms of prior cooking skills.they will pace their instructions based upon the interests and skill levels of each student. There will be at least two other staff members assisting in the kitchen, in addition to the chef.so there are plenty of helping hands.

We chose to fly directly into Puebla, connecting through Houston. You can fly into Mexico City and arrange for surface transportation.this is probably a little less expensive, but certainly takes more time.

If your idea of luxury is slightly off the beaten path and you dont require room service for breakfast or your evenings sleeping on 600 thread count Pratesi bed linens..this may be a perfect choice for you and your wife.

    Buena suerte, amigo
