complimentary upgrades
I have just seen an auction whichI am considering bidding on and it states that you will get a complimentary upgrade to a suite(very beautiful, I must add!), subject to availability on arrival. Do they really upgrade you or is this just an incentive to get you to book? Has anyone been in this situation where they may get upgraded and have actually got the upgrade? I suppose it is more likely if you go during the quieter months? Therefore, can anyone tell me when the quietertime is for Los Cabos? Thanks.

Hi Mary-J,
So far I've yet to obtain a complimentary upgrade, though as you say it may have to do with when you travel. You may want to check with the property to see how full they tend to be at the time of year you're travelling.
I'd expect that low season in Los Cabos would be whenever it's rainy or the weather is otherwise unpleasant (generally true for most places, I've found).
Cheers,
Julian

Hi Mary,
I think it varies with the property. We have been upgraded at least twice on a luxury link package - once at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler back in 1999 (I think) and another time at the St. Regis Aspen. We were at Whistler during the shoulder season (American Thanksgiving); the other time at the St. Regis I don't know if we were upgraded because of the Luxury Link package, because I was an elite member of Starwood Preferred Guest (which also is supposed to result in a space-available upgrade), or because they thought our dog was cute. That was in January during ski season - not the most crowded season, but not shoulder season by any means - the hotel was quite busy, in fact.
So, I guess the answer would be, yes, they will upgrade you if there's space available, just on the basis of having bought the LL package. I would add, though, that with many more upscale hotels, they will often do that if they have space, as the space would go to waste anyway, and they will gain a loyal customer with a memorable "free" upgrade.
And Julian is right - more space likely at any time when the season is relatively "unpleasant" - in Los Cabos that would be August-October (very hot, and then tending toward rainy season). I was there in late August and it really wasn't bad - hot and sunny every day, though the more you go into September or October the rainier it is likely to be.

Hi Mary
I have already bought a package which offered an ungrade at the time of check-in. It was a couple of years ago, in Rome for the Majestic Hotel. The suite was available, and we got the upgrade. It was wondeful!

Re: complimentary upgrades
mary-j...the summer months are the least visited time to Cabo. August thru October are the hottest months in Cabo...temps can reach 90 - 100F during the day..however, there are typically sea breezes to moderate the humidity. Be aware, the same period is also "hurricane season" in both the Pacific and Atlantic....typically, Pacific storms do not make landfall in the Baja region, but there are some rain events associated with the paths of these storms. This past year was very active along the west coast of Mexico. Of course, no whale watching during the summer....since they will have headed for northern waters.
Cabo is a fun place at night(lots of CA folks have homes and hang out there)...if you go, stop in the Cabo Wabo Cantina www.cabowabo.com, whether you drink tequila or not. There are some great small towns north along theroad to La Paz as well.- Ω -

Omegaet- Thanks for the info. I definately want it to be hot as I love the heat. After being in Dubai in the middle of summer, it makes you more tolerant of it. Now, the rain -that is a different story.I think the rain personally is the one thing that can really spoil a holiday.I know some people do not bother about the rain but I really do not like it when way on holiday.I don't mind it at home, as we are well used to it here. An odd shower on holiday is fine but not any more than that. Of these three months, which would have the least rainfall? Thanks.

mary-j....you might want to check www.caboweather.com on a regular basis prior to planning your actual departure date. You can easily determine the general weather patterns and the activity level of hurricanes, should you choose to travel during that season.

Mary-J - If you are ok with the heat, August would be the time to go. It was very hot and sunny, and dry. No rainfall, and nary a cloud in the sky.kboojd wrote:

Also, be careful on the Pacific side beaches. The water can be very rough and swimming is not advised, certainly in August. The waves were about 6 feet high and crashing on the beach. My mother, a strong swimmer, was knocked down and lost her hat and sunglasses. The beaches are pretty wide, so you can certainly stroll on the beach, but do keep an eye on where the waves are breaking!

I always ask for an upgrade no matter where I go or what I do. At the end of the day I still usually fly tourist and end up with the same category of room I book, but now and then I get lucky.

We always ask for the possibility of an upgrade and are sometimes very pleasantly surprised. I have noticed the airlines want to sell out their first class seats and offer a last minute upgrade to first class at checkin for less that $100. I have used this opportunity for longer trips and always hope for the same opportunity for the return trip. While it is a bit risky to wait until the very last minute to upgrade, the price differential makes it worth while to me...and a bit of fun, too. Cheers...Marolyn
