Northwest flight attendants want Delta to offer bigger sizes....
ATLANTA (AP) -- The union that represents flight attendants who worked for Northwest Airlines before it was bought by Delta Air Lines is crying foul over Delta's failure to offer bigger sizes for its signature red dress uniform designed by Richard Tyler.
When he was hired to create his uniform collection, Tyler said he wanted them to "look sexy and great."
The Northwest chapter of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA has filed a grievance with the world's largest airline operator, asking it to offer the red dress up to size 28. The union hopes the grievance will go to mediation in August.
The red dress currently is only offered up to size 18, though a Delta spokeswoman said the airline offers a range of outfits in other colors and styles up to size 28 that flight attendants can wear.- Ω -

This has to be a joke, the union actually believes a size 28 rear deck will fit through an emergency exit?

Considering NW FA's have a union [for now] I guess the "Tyler Red Dress" may be a moot point in the future if the size exceeds 18. Personally, I have seen it on some size 16 FA's and it is not the most flattering look in larger sizes, period. The same dress in black (or new midnight navy) looks completely different. I can also say (condemn me if you wish) but I truly dislike the Pepto pink Richard Tyler dress that is available for limited purchase and wear dates to support breast cancer awareness. The color is pretty horrid on most women! I also disagree with the policy for FAs's to wear pink tee shirts and jeans during that same campaign. I find it unprofessional looking and reminds me of fast food restaurant workers. I want to KNOW who looks like a FA in an emergency situation, not to be mistaken for passengers.
NW pilots are required to wear caps while in the terminal [now that they are following DL rules and they have a union...] So far, doesn't seem to be a problem...
I can tell you, I have never seen a male FA wearing a size equivalent to a woman's size 28.
I personally believe airlines should require an annual test for all on board employees to be able to get in and out of a life raft in a moving body of water.

mountie & kyshel...I'm not sure airlines impose a strict "fit" policy on egress for emergency window exit use....and I think it would be a good idea to require all cabin personnel to be pass an annual test to egress through window exits (I'm not sure a substantial number of passengers could make it through).
I guess the USAir water landing in NY brings some credence to the life raft proficiency.- Ω -

Hi All,
My thoughts are if the flight attendants need a size 28 dress (gosh only knows what that equivalent would be on a guy), but they would not fit down the aisles pushing those carts, definitely have trouble fitting into the bathrooms... never make it out an emergency window for sure... and lastly never fit in the shrinking seats! So my thought is, if the personnel at Delta can be big as more than two of me, and get away with this, maybe Delta will increase the aisle widths and seat sizes for their paying passengers!

CMDAVILACLI, omegaet and kyshel, if Delta and NW could keep those flight attendants limits down around size 14 or below, they might be able to save enough fuel to eliminate the checked baggage fees for passengers!

kyshel, knowing you have back door access to this type of information; did the dress size issue ever get settled?

well, all I know is the same as the general public
I read aviation websites and no one is touching it because it's a "grievance" which means it could just be posturing and I doubt there will ultimately be any support for the "attack of the killer tomatoes". This opens another can of "snakes on a plane" (which BTW--is one of the FUNNIEST movies I wanted to not watch!!)"wherever you go, there you are"

kyshel, I was on a Delta flight last week and one of your road graders was working it, but she didn't have on a red dress. Come on now, she looked like the BEFORE picture in one of those late night TV ads for weight loss.kyshel wrote:
