Just heard that Tokyo is opening its airport again to facilitate relief getting into Tokyo, but I guess not too many people will chose to take a trip to Tokyo if they don't have to....

Wonder if that's Haneda?; it's south and closer to the tsunami/quake regions. Narita has been open for weeks. They closed it very briefly (with the recent quake a few days ago) to inspect the runways. Since the 747 heavies land there every few minutes at peak times.
We saw plenty of traffic--planes and passengers--the terminals were very busy. Some of our coach loads were light to/from States but Bangkok flts were nearly full.
Edited: That was Sendai, which just rec'd it's first commercial flight since the quake. It's not Tokyo. Apparently they've been receiving humanitarian relief flights so the first commercial flight,, which was from Haneda, is quite a milestone.Last edited by kyshel; 04-13-2011 at 03:31 AM.

You are right it was Sendai. Here is an excerpt from the AFP news clip.
"A Commercial aircraft landed in Sendai on Wednesday for the first time since the city's busy airport was crippled by the powerful tsunami that smashed into Japan last month.
The opening will provide a boost to an area constrained by road closures and limited train services, which has hampered the relief effort.
A Japan Airlines (JAL) plane from Tokyo's Haneda airport touched down on the runway around 8:00 am (2300 GMT Tuesday) and was greeted by staff as it taxied towards the terminal building.
JAL and competitor All Nippon Airlines (ANA) will run six shuttle flights a day between Sendai, the largest city in the devastated northeast of Japan, and Tokyo or Osaka."
