bonniejoy03, I read a number of the tweets coming in from the backpacker crowd doing the bus and hostel routine in Peru. It is like a right of passage for so many of these travelers. Not my style, never has been and never will be. When I make my Peru trip, I will travel with LL.
There must be a dozen threads active here in the community regarding Peru. Why has Peru become such a popular travel destination? Does everyone think they must visit Machu Picchu before they die? I've never been to Peru, so maybe that's why I am a little mystified about all of the conversation.
I am very interested in archaeology and there are many sites on my list to visit. I have visited quite a few and have to say that Machu Picchu is worth the trip! The site is not very ancient compared to others but the sheer beauty of the setting and the way the Incas did their building is simply amazing. Peru is a very beautiful country and the people are friendly. I also like Spanish colonial architecture and Peru also fits the bill for that. Colca Canyon in southern Peru is bigger and deeper than the grand canyon and you get to see the Andean Condors - very huge birds just soaring over the canyon.

mountie...for the most part, we have to agree the backpacking days are behind us and yes, it was both a "right of passage" and an economic issue. No more overnight trips in trains and buses. The last two times we stayed in a tent; one came with a butler and private masai warrior guard and the other with a Berber guide. No more nights in hostels for us.
Peru has really focused on upscale travelers during the past 10 years (although backpackers and budget tour packages still abound) and the results are a wonderful selection of luxury properties, which still allow for the explorations of the various sites and a glass of champagne or pisco sour at Happy Hour or before the evening massage. LL has certainly be offering a nice selection of these properties (i.e. Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Spa.....and I'll bet the new Aranwa Hotel in Cusco - which is schedule to open in October - will eventually be an auction package as well.
When you finally decide to make your trip to Peru, you will have plenty of luxury choices.....the sooner the beter!

Great find for this this hotel. I went back and checked the auction package being offered and it is for a Riverview Suite. Then I explored the different views on this link and the Riverview Suites are impressive to say the least. Much better than static photos!Quote:
