Just saw a story on the news this morning about some civil unreast in the southern part of Peru in Puerto Maldonado - it seems there is god in these parts and hordes of folks have been flocking to the area in the hopes of striking it rich. The town of Puerto Maldonado was a little town that you fly to to enter the southern portion of the Peruvian Amazon - we were here on the start of our Amazon adventure a few years ago to see the giant river otters in the lake Sandoval part of the Amazon - much less crowded than going in through the northern port of Iquitos. From what they were showing on the news - it looked pretty intense - evidently the government is trying to crack down on all the pollution from the gold mining and having little success - I hope this portion of the country does not get ruined from un regulated gold mining - I know folks are poor and need jobs but tourism was really starting to pick up here and it is one of the few areas in the Amazon left where there are giant otters.
