Just saw a story on the news this morning about some civil unreast in the southern part of Peru in Puerto Maldonado - it seems there is god in these parts and hordes of folks have been flocking to the area in the hopes of striking it rich. The town of Puerto Maldonado was a little town that you fly to to enter the southern portion of the Peruvian Amazon - we were here on the start of our Amazon adventure a few years ago to see the giant river otters in the lake Sandoval part of the Amazon - much less crowded than going in through the northern port of Iquitos. From what they were showing on the news - it looked pretty intense - evidently the government is trying to crack down on all the pollution from the gold mining and having little success - I hope this portion of the country does not get ruined from un regulated gold mining - I know folks are poor and need jobs but tourism was really starting to pick up here and it is one of the few areas in the Amazon left where there are giant otters.

I just posted a request for an eco-lodge in Ecuador that also has the giant otters in their local lake.
Napo Reserve. I bet their biz picks up very soon. Thanks for the update. We were very interested in the Peruvian Amazonas offering on LL for next year."wherever you go, there you are"

11-11-2011, 04:06 AMHey -O-, I've read the entire book. It's a great read, well written and full of great tips for certain. I'm just scheduled to spent one very long day in Machu Picchu, but after reading about some of the experiences Mr. Adams has enjoyed, I already know one day is not enough. I like his maps and I will make a copy of several of his tips to take along.
I suggest anyone planning a trip to MP get their hands on a copy of this work. It will certainly add a lot of understanding and meaning to the visit.
Thanks again for the tip.
Flying our on December 4th.

01-29-2012, 06:00 AMI didn't see a single drop of rain during my time in Peru. It was a great trip and I'm pleased for all of the ideas and tips given to me by other community members. The Luxury Link properties I used just blew my mind. I know I drive my friends and contacts nuts talking about Peru.

03-06-2012, 03:44 PMMy March/April 2012 issue of Destinations Magazine just arrived and there was a very nice four page spread on a long list of Peru's new hotels - and some old ones as well. Glad to see the writer included my stop and stay at the O-E Miraflores Park in Lima.
Peru is really a hot destination these days. I loved it!

mountie, I read the same article, which was nicely done, but I thought it was strange that the writer did not mention either of the Aranwa properties (which imo, are on par if not better that several of those he reviewed).
