Hi frequent flyer,
No you are not the one who is dyslexic, it was I who wasn't seeing clear; the correct spelling is "thread". I guess, answering these posts late at night doesn't help... Sorry about that...

Hi travelfan
Boy am I relieved. Now that we've threaded our way through one more little snag, I feel much better (have just finished our traditional Scandinavian Christmas dinner and family get-together. Am taking a bit of a breather and checking onmy "Community Mailers" before finishing wrapping the presents.

Hi FF,
Sorry about the confusion I created. What does Scandinavian dinner consist of? Hope you had a good one.

Hi travelfan
The Scandinavian Christmas dinner 's sensational and delicious! Its centerpiece is usually the traditional "smorgasbord" which consists of cooked ham, cheeses, pickled herring, beet salad, a variety of cold cuts, baked turnip casserole, mashed potatoes, and different kinds of sliced bread. It's usually served buffet-style, accompanied by drinks (vodka, etc.), and followed up by dessert dishes like rice pudding, plum turnovers, and a wonderful liquour called Akvavit (that burns all the way down to the tummy and warms up the insides, when it's usually cold outside). The specif constituent ingredients of smorgasbord varies from country to country, region by region and from family to family throughout Scandinavia but the overall approach seems pretty much universal in those northern countries.

Hi curtiejoe. Your description of the Scandinavian Christmas dinner reminds me of one of my favorite restaurants at Disneyworld. At Akershus, in EPCOT's Norway, they have a wonderful smorgasbord. It's much as you describe, minus the Akvait and Vodka! Glad to find out it's more or less authentic, although I'm sure yours was better. OK, now I'm getting hungry.

Hi disneygal
Glad to hear there's now a Norway House at Epcot with a good restaurant featuring smorgasbord. last time we were at Disneworld when the kids were small, EPCOT had no Norway House. I'm sure you'll enjoy the food at a smorgasbord as it's basically a buffet with many different delicacies to choose from. So, something for everyone to like.

Hi ff,
Thanks for your description of "smorgasbord". Of course, I am familiar with "smorgasbord", I just didn't think of it when you said Skandinavian dinner. What a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas Eve. It reminds me of the feast we had with our Danish friends who put up a similar "smorgasbord", and like the Finns, the Dutch are equally keen on Akquavit. They put the whole bottle of Akquavit into the freezer and serve it ice cold. I love the stuff. I can handle Akquavit, but give me Gin and I black out from it. Happened 3 times over an interval of 10 years or so before I figured out I was allergic to Gin, haven't touched the stuff since....
Well, we are looking forward to the next celebration.... Saint Sylvester, New Year's Eve.... Preparing anything special for that one???

Hi tf
I know the old Tanquaray in the green bottle can be deadly...better stick to the Akvavit with a goodly helping of smoked ham and some pickled herring in dill sauce.
New year's Eve we're meeting friends at Kelsey's, a "road house'- type of restaurant near their home north of Toronto, for a quiet dinner before catching the late show at the nearby Cineplex. It'll be either "Dream Girls" or "Children of Men" this time. This dinner & movie combo is something we've done now for five years in a row with our dear friends. None of us like wild parties where everyone gets relly silly, and we've been to Times Square & watched the giant silver ball descend at midnight, and all manner of other kinds of New Year's celebrations. So, now, we just take it easy. How about you?

Hi ff,
You bet the green bottle is banned in my house. These days I prefer a good glass of wine. Dinner and mouvie with friends sounds like fun. We too had been to Times Square and watched the giant silver ball counted down in our younger days when we lived in Westchester. We are joining friends for dinner and some champagne, nothing fancy... On New Years Day however, we are invited by some German friends who insist we have to eat Sauerkraut and Kassler Rippchen (smoked pork) so we won't run out of money in 2007. They claim this is an old tradition in the Hessen province of Germany, they have eaten this meal on New Years day as long as they can remember and haven't run out of money yet....

::Hi tf

There must be some magic in that old Kassler Rippchen to keep your German friends in the money for so long! Wish you'd pass on the secret to us 'po folks' or maybe we need to travel to Hessen to find their pot of gold?
This Christmas we discovered a very tasty new libation from Italy. It's Limoncello! Comes in a tall, frosty-looking bottle and packs a wallop! Almost drained the whole thing between the two of ussince X-mas, when we got it from our friends Carol and Dara (she's Hungarian and he's a Kurd from Turkey). WOW! You should try it for New year's Eve with your friends and start a new tradition.
Have a Happy! :womanvery-happy:
