Things To Consider
Unfortunately, as a frequent business traveler, I can't always select "luxury" accommodations for some overnight stays.
The information in this link, whether totally accurate or somewhat fabricated, is still a cause for concern.....makes me wonder if usingAntibacterial Moist Towelettes to clean the steering wheel of my rental cars is worth the effort:

ugh!
An innkeeper (!) at a B&B we stayed in advised us to bring wipes for hotel phones, remote control, light switches, doorknobs, etc. We knew to take that comforter off the bed at the first opportunity. I'm thisclose to bringing my own sheets and towels but that would mean an extra suitcase.
For most of our trips, a hotel room is just a place to sleep. However, there are those few where hanging out in the room takes up the better part of the day--I guess we will have to be more vigilant when inspecting the accomodations we've been given.
The lure of travel is too greatto stay home.

Come on now, be honest.
I know I'm not the only one in here that looks in the closet, looks under the bed (remember all of those news stories about bodies being found under hotel beds), strips most of the bed coverings off, carries a large size can of Lysol and sprays it on every surface and never, never walks on the carpet without something of my own covering my feet!
OK, maybe I'm a little paranoid, but I'm absolutely certain not every food server observes that hand washing sign in the bathroom.

Interesting article - I do find myself checking for bedbugs and other crittersnow but I don't get carried away with the other stuff - I shake the blankets out, etc. I think we have become a nation of Purell junkies and are getting way too fixated on getting rid of "germs" Too much use of this stuff will lead to way worse things and there was just an article on triclosan (an ingredient in many antibacterial things) that notes how toxic it is and can cause severe asthma attachks, etc.
One hotel we stayed in during one of our jungle trips had a cute little frog in the toilet tank (we left him there for the whole stay) and we have had the stray gecko running around and never had any problems.
DRoam if you want to, roam around the world...........
