Thanks everyone. Disneygal: what time of year did you go to Palm Island? I am surprised to hear of the no-seeums unless it had been rainy. Yikes. I hope we don't have tons of them! November is typically not a great time to go because rains are just finishing and the buggies are still out. We still are considering November/December though.



Beerman: The trip through the Grenadines sounds wonderful. We had stayed on Young Island and enjoyed it. We also sailed from Young Island and spent one night in the Bequia harbour and one night in the Mustique harbour. I have been reading more on Bequia and I think I want to spend more time there. There is a place to stay, Firefly, that has a sister property in Mustique. Looks good but a little expensive. You can also rent a villa in Bequia for a good cost. The island isn't too touristy yet which is nice.

We were on Palm Island the 2nd week in December. I think there was more rain than usual the previous week or so. Just the way it goes....

Beerman, you flew to Union Island, did the catamaran trip and came back to Barbados the same day? That's one wild day! I had a week to prepare myself for the flight back!

Same question here...looking for one (late arrival) night stay in Barbados in-transit. Anything just a few miles from the airport that would be relatively dependable (i.e., reception actually awake at 11pm!). Hilton is less than 10 miles, but $300+. Hate to drop that kind of dough just to rest our tired bodies. Not sure what kind of response we'd get from a local resort/hotel considering we're just there for a night. Surely, there's someplace that is accustomed to the quick in and out.

Disneygal- Really wasn't too bad. 1 hour fleight from Barbados to Union Island, we sailed for 6 hours then 1 hour back to Barbados. we were served great local food on the catamaran and lots of rum. Great trip.

I have just returned from Barbados after spending a glorious week at The House. It is one of the 4 hotels in the "Elegant Hotels Group". It is incredible in every way, and we plan to return next year for the third year in a row.......... amazing staff, wonderful service, etc........not to mention that the Barbadian people are some of the most wonderful I have ever met.
One other thing... the dining on Barbados is truly extraordinary.Some of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in anywhere.

Hi Anesdocno1. Thanks for the info. We plan to stay at Turtle Beach in November. (just using it one night in and one night out on the way to Mustique.) I think it is also part of the Elegant Hotels Group. Did you see the property? I think they might share some type of dining priviledges? Also, how did you fly into Barbados? I am noticing that there are not as many flights that go to Barbados from the East Coast of the US. Many arrive very late at night. Thanks for any info!

We took the water taxi to all four of the "elegant group hotels". The one you are staying at is not far from The House. It is all-inclusive, while at The House there is only breakfast;however, that is an understatement, because the beach ambassadors continually bring treats to the beach, e.g.ice cream bars, fresh fruit cups, endless bottles of cold water in ice buckets, and the wonderful ritual of late afternoon tea(with scones, small sandwiches, etc). Late at night there is also a dessert table with a cake, and frequently a small glass of port.

Turtle Beach looks nice as well, although we loved the small size (34 rooms) of The House. All guests also have to be at least 18 years old, which we liked because of the quiet atmosphere.

I think your decision is a good one, however, because you won't have to worry about finding restaurants those isolated days. Most of the best restaurants are not far away though. "The Cliff" is between Turtle Beach and The House, and it is spectacular; we traditionally eat there the last night for our farewell dinner.

If you have time, take the water taxi to check out the other sites. Tamarind Cove is next door to The House, and The Colony Club is further north and a very scenic ride.

Hi anesdocno1 and welcome to the LL community! I've been leaning towards The House for the one night I have in Barbados. I'll actually have close to a full day before heading off on a cruise. It sounds as though you enjoyed your stay there. Anything else you can share to sway me one way or the other? At this point the other properties I'm considering are Fairmont Royal Pavilion and the Colony Club. But leaning strongly towards The House.

Hi Anesdocno1. Great ideas. Thanks. Now, one of my factors in choosing would be distance from the airport. Because we are only staying one night in and one night out, we need a place fairly close the the airport. Also, the flights arrive into Barbardos about 3:30pm and the flight the next day is about 11am. We really wouldn't have a lot of time in Barbados. How far is The House from the airport? Do you know the transfer costs?I LOVE the idea of ice cream bars so I could definitely get the value of the room from my eating tons of iice cream.We also love the idea of only over 18 years old. I have read so much about Turtle Beach and all the kids, hoopla with entertainment, etc. We don't need this however, it would only be one night. I really am torn. One idea is to do one property in and the other on the out.

The advantages of having a hotel located on the west coast area of Barbados, where the water is so much calmer, in my opinion out weigh the slight increase in the distance. It takes about 30 minutes to go from The House to the airport. Hotels that are located on the sounthern part of the island have great beaches as well, but the water is rougher. East coast locations are few because it is the Atlantic Ocean, and consequently very rough... good conditions for the adventurous surfers, etc.

As you go further up the west coast, the commute to the airport gets a bit longer; however, remember that it is not a very big island, so most places are going to create too long a commute. The main thing to do is arrange a reliable driver to pick you up for transfer. We allow 2 1/2 hours before the flight... 30 minutes for the ride, and then 2 hours at Grantley Adams Int'l before the flight. We also found the airport checkin and security to be run effeciently.

I really can't comment on the hotels on the south shore near the airport because we don't go there. Once we first arrived in Barbados, we loved the convenience of everything being located along the area near Holetown and Speightstown that we decided to avoid the commute to even visit restaurants there. The parish of St.James(where the house is located) and the parish of St.Peters which is just to the north, are the platinum locations on the island. When you see the entrances to the incredible seaside estates and other resorts like Sandy Lane (just a short distance from The House), you can easily understand why this part of the island is so special.

The bottom line is that both locations you are considering are not far from the airport; even if you were staying on the south shore closer to the airport, you would probably save only 15 minutes or so with the commute.

Let me know if you need any other suggestions...... you have me wanting to go back already (smile).
