02-02-2007, 07:50 AMBest Resort for elder parents
I am trying to decide on a resort for my husband, 18 year old college daughterand my two parents ages 83 and 82. Parents are avid golfers and really active. Only issue is my Dad has trouble walking for any distance at all. (by the way, Mom and Dad will have been married 60 years in July)
Does anyone have a resort in the Caribbean they might recommend. Something that would allow a golf cart to be used to get around the resort would be ideal. Large enough to keep my 18 year old daughter entertained.
Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Hi. The obvious prolem, as my editor used to say, is the obvious prolem: trying to satisfy three dispirite expectations. Here are some suggestions that might (big might) appeal. Though I have to say that emphaszizing golf is a limiting factor. If your 18-year old daughter is a water actvist--scuba? sailing? et al-- that would help. But, not easy. Not too many places offer golf carts to guests, but here are some suggestions. Harbour Island, off of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, has several golf cart rental agencies because no visitors can drive cars on the island. Dunmore Beach Club is relatively reasonable, food can be quite good (depends on chef of the moment) and is right on the fanmous Pink Beach. For golf, you have to reverse to Eleuthera, which means a water taxi both ways, then a cab to a nearby course. Four Seasons Nevis hasd an on-site golf course, as does the FS in Exuma. Carts are only for the courses, though. And they're pretty regimented for a curious 18-year old. You can rent a 3-bedroom villa at Little Dix on Virgin Gorda in the BVI; it comes with a golf cart, and is a most sumptuous way to spend a fortune. (Private pool, private chef available, trips to Jost Van Dyck, sailing lessons, a trip to Annegada might keep your daughter busy. LD is also next to a still-sweetly Caribbean town with some funky bars and yachties from all over. Virgin Gorda is a pretty island, too.Another place that might offfer some options is Bermuda. Golf is everywhere, and I know you cannot rent a car (they're famous for their moped accidents) but golf carts? Not sure.
Does any of this help? Itis a tough target to satisfy.

Ooops. Forget a place that might work. Raffles, on Canouan Island in the Grenadines. Newly re-done, good food and service (I'm told by some friends just there recently) and each villa
(really a suite) comes with a golf cart. Golf course is there, and place attracts lots of Euopeans, year round. (August is Italy month at most Caribbean resorts.) We were there when it was run by Orient Express., so don't know the new regime first hand. But, it isn't easy to et to, which might be a problem for your parents. As I recall, you transfer through San Juan or St. Martin, and more direct service is via charter. There is a casino, but it doesn't--or didn't--influence the character of the place. All the usual water sports are available for your daughter. A good place, perhaps, to get SCUBA certified? Make sure the resort has a PADI dive shop.
Have fun.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my request for information. We are looking in to Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. It has received mostly good reviews and it certainly fits our needs. Do you know anything about the resort?
